Dell List Computer Configuration Options in order not random.

700 points posted to Dell Community, Dell Web Site by jorge 06/25/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell list computer configuration options in an ordered list not random!

When configuring a computer a list of options for lets say the processor should be in order based on speed or price, here's an example from the Dell Precision M65:

O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]

Whats up with this list? Totally confusing or leads to confusion, for the average Joe, yet again today I had to explain that Dell just lists things randomly not in some optimal way.

The list should read like this (or in reverse but in order):

* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]

Make it so and quite confusing your customers!

Here's another one for the Hard Drive:

O 100GB Hard Drive (7200RPM) [add $16.60]
May delay your Dell Precision M65 ship date
O 80GB Hard Drive (7200RPM) [add $8.30]
* 60GB Hard Drive (7200RPM) [Included in Price]
O 120GB Hard Drive (5400RPM) [subtract $24.90]
O 80GB Hard Drive (5400RPM) [subtract $49.80]
O 60GB Hard Drive (5400RPM) [subtract $57.27]
O 160GB Hard Drive (7200RPM) [add $315.40]

Looks in order, 7200 RPMs at the top then look at the bottom! Eek!

I agree with Jorge. These are really simple things but they are very important. I would have thought that someone would have seen the marketing benefit to organizing the information in a consistent and logical manner.

This is just one of many examples that makes using the Dell website so difficult and time consuming.

This is a really great idea and really goes along with the ideas I have put up on adding granularity to the order process. I am really surprised that for an organization with the "pull" and marketing of Dell, someone hasnt made these fixes to the site yet. I mean after all, Dell does a lot of targeting and purchasing in the low end consumer space. Perhaps not as much as an E-machines or Gateway or [insert retail store brand here], but still a significant sales segment is the set of people who would be screwed up like that.

i definitely agree. i had trouble with the xps 1210. the hard drives in particular are just all wrong

IT's so you don't get to cozy with just picking the cheapest one. If they can sneak in some expensive RAM, then that benefits their bottom line. It's like when they keep rearranging the Wal-Mart. It's so you can't go right in and out by getting just what you need. You just go right to... Wait when did toys get back here? Great now you've got to buy the kids something or play the heavy and hear them cry for three hours.

All of this sales marketing games, some of which are misleading and deceptive may lead some of their customers to go elsewhere to purchase their computers in the future. There is absolutely nothing more frustrating for a customer than to discover that they have been tricked. Dell can continue to do business this way but at substantial risk to their market share and bottom line.

yes, fully agreed. gunnywalker, you're right but lindahewitt, you have a good point - tricks don't work. the customers aren't stupid enough.

Whats to review!?!

Oh yea, you want to favor what you want to get rid of and don't want the customer to actually select whats best for them without making mistakes and then sending the system back costing the customer in shipping and wasted time without the computer, then Dell has to sell it in the refurbished site or worse throw it awayI guess Dell figures thats a better solution?

Yeah what do you have to review? Just do what the idea says and put them in order instead of randomly.

Reviewing the loss of revenue in getting people who click expecting a linear list to click the wrong option.

Also have a specification chart with the processors so you can determine the performance difference. The processors change so much it is difficult to keep track. WHY SHOULD WE SPEND MORE?
