Matte (NOT TrueLife) Display on XPS m1330

960 points posted to Monitors and Displays, XPS products by mw 06/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

The XPS m1330 seems to be the perfect machine, aside from a few imperfections (no Gigabit Ethernet, for example). However, there is one feature that is an absolute dealbreaker for me--the glossy TrueLife screen. I remember the day before the shiny screens, and what a beautiful day that was.

If the XPS m1330 were available with a matte option (along with LED backlighting, of course), I would order one right now. I just don't think I can deal with the TrueLife panel.

On thing though; that xps 1330 has fairly high max nits of brightness. 300 according to specs. That's enough to combat the notorious glare said of glossy screens. Most of those glossy screens out there are pushing ~180 nits.

If you want a Matte screen then buy an IBM/Lenovo pc!

If I wanted Lenovo, I'd buy Lenovo. But this is a Dell forum. They ask for suggestions, and I give them. Simple as that.

As for the 300 nits, I agree that is very bright. But you're still going to get reflections from light sources. It will help, but not solve the issue.

Yes, am going to get the xps 1330 - only stopped by the fact that it has no matte screen option.

Nits are for naught if you are trying to view something dark.

I don't like truelife glossy screens either. Unfortunately, the weight of our opinion is fragmented over a number of submissions which basically say the same thing: please offer a matte screen option.

I suggest that we all vote for the story below, to show the measure of interest in non-truelife screens. I picked it because it is currently the "no-truelife" submission with the highest score.

That really sucks it's not offered in anti-glare. I hate the reflection of the lights in glossy!!

Glossy screens are really painful if you want to work (ie. read/write) on your laptop. I would definitely choose xps 1330 if it had the matte option.

Spot on - the lack of a matte screen really puts me off the 1330. I love the screen on my Inspiron 8200, and everytime I go into a store and look at glassy screens, or look at my friend's HP I can't understand the appeal of seeing myself all the time in the screen. Please, please offer the matter option.

It still says under review here...
Is Dell's Vostro 1310 somehow the answer to this thread?

I completely agree with this post. I purchased my XPSM1330 back in late October and love everything about it. Except for the screen. The weight and design is excellent - what is not excellent is trying to use this laptop anywhere other than a dark room.

I completely hope Dell implements this into the M1330 and their other laptops M1530. Shame that in order to get a matte screen, one must buy a Inspiron which forgos the excellent design of their "newer" XPS lines.

I can't believe it's been almost a year and this hasn't been resolved one way or the other.

So, the Dell Vostro 1310 has been released, along with it the 13.3" Anti-Glare screen ... so, what's the deal -- all the XPS owners are up the creek? I like this XPS M1330, have no intention to sell it - but this glare is awful.

I was originally considering getting XPS M1330 but will not buy it now, because of the glare issue. I am an academic and use it mainly for work, often in brightly lit rooms, cafes, etc. My friend has thhis model and it is basically usuable outside. I will continue looking for a laptop (any manufacturer) that offers a matte screen. If Dell offers a matte option in a near future, they will get my money ;-)
Strange that they did not think about the office/academic crowd when designing this otherwise pretty machine. . . .
