Option for gigabit ethernet for new Inspirons.

Currently, only 10/100 is offered.

Would be awfully nice to have the option to have gigabit ethernet on the Inspiron 1520/21, 1720/21.

That being 10/100/1000.

06/29/07		 All IBM/Lenovo laptops I believe have this feature standard. At least all of the T series.

07/13/07		 Nope. The only computer as I believe has gigabit option from dell (except servers) are optiplex desktops. This is a ridiculous situation and I wonder how dell can claim to be at cutting edge.

12/03/07		 Dell seems to think that Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) is only useful for "business" PCs (Optiplex and Latitude) and high end workstations (Precision), but I have a GbE home network and transfer large audio files (> 1GB) all the time. GbE makes network file transfer two or three times as fast, and I will not go back to 10/100. Networking chips are cheap, I'll bet it doesn't cost much more if anything to include gigabit on their system boards. So what's holding up GbE for Inspiron, Vostro? I passed on buying an Inspiron recently because of this, and I can build a fast computer cheaper than what Dell charges for their Precision line.

Jan 24		 Power management is an issue. If the PHY is turned off when there's no link, though, then gigabit would be ideal.
