Ubuntu on vostro

560 points posted to Linux, Vostro products, Laptops by tashmooclam 07/21/07

I believe Dell should load ubuntu linux on the vostro laptops for business use.

Linux makes good sense for business. Also, free applications for business like openoffice, etc. make sense for business.

More security in Linux also makes sense for business.

I think business would adopt Linux if Dell provided the equipment loaded with Ubuntu.

I would have bought a pre-loaded ubuntu inspiron laptop, but I don't like glossy screens.

Oah.. I just bought a Vostro in Canada where Linux Ubuntu isn't disponible at all. Asked for it and didn't get it. It would have been so cool if I could buy this system with Ubuntu, I'm sick of Windows preinstalled OS that we can't remove.... That's unbelivable. At least I can install Ubuntu myself but it would be nice I Dell could produce already Ubuntu computers. I plan to buy new computers in the future and I will choice Ubuntu over any other system if it become disponible.

I am a user in a small engineering business. Linux does a better job of the things that we need to do than Windows. On some of our mechanical simulation software Linux is twice as fast as Windows on the same hardware. Linux is not optional. The Vostro series is exceptionally good value for money we would definitely buy some products from this series if they were preinstalled with Ubuntu (or simply certified for linux and available OS free). With no guarantee that I'll be able to get all the hardware to work with Ubuntu on a Vostro I may as well get a macbookpro and install ubuntu on it - apple are doing well on the hardware vs cost equation. Otherwise the safe option is HP, they have a good line of desktop replacement laptops that are certified for use with Linux and a pretty reasonably priced.
