Nvidia 8700M GT for XPS1710

530 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products by impulse 07/25/07

I think the XPS1710 should have a Directx10 card option. The recently released Nvidia 8700M GT is the most powerful Directx10 notebook card as of now. Why not add it as an option?

How Much Graphics Mem Does It Have On It? I Found 512Mb? Correct?

There will be 256mb and 512mb versions, apparently.

Nope. Sorry. But I'm afraid you're going to have to spend another exorbitant $4000+ on the new XPS 1720 when it comes out to get the latest graphics card. :)

Still Sounds Cool To Me.

@ Chris. sure $2300. But at that level of configuration, only an idiot... erm I mean, one might as well get an inspiron. Considering what the XPS is for.

Er.Dell doesn't fit a 8700M GT because it is less powerful than the current 7950GTX.
Forget DX10 for a year, the current implimentaion is crud, with 8800GTX's crawling along at medium resolution in the few DX10 games there are, what hope is there for a pussy mobile 8700M GT.....you will all be complaining nice shadow and smoke effects, pity it has to run at 640x480 to get 40fps.
I would bet just about anything that when the likes of crysis comes out, everybody will be running it in DX9 because they will get sick of the huge reduction in framerates using DX10.....8700M GT @ 1680x1050 + DX10....dream on.
One article of many showing the reality of Dx10 and 8 series desktop cards

gerryjosen: The reason people would want a 8700M GT is because it is a DX10 card, even though it isn't more powerful then the 7950GTX. It's more futureproof. And if you don't believe me I suggest you check out the Toshiba X205, one of the first notebooks to get a 8700M GT.

And the reason Dell doesn't fit the 8700M GT is because it's still a new card, and as .chris stated, it's much more likely that they'd update the XPS itself before giving it a new card. But either way, sooner or later Dells will be using 8700's.

And if you need further proof: http://www.dignews.com/preview.php?story_id=24171< you're convinced. Now GTFO of my thread.
Fantasy land my ass.

Futureproof? what shower of rain did you come down in,no such thing as futureproof,by the time DX10 is sorted and commonplace you probably will have owned another laptop or two.
And yes I've seen that article you linked to...do you notice how there are no frames per second shown or listed,in fact nothing is even mentioned about settings or whether Tracy even played it in DX10 mode on that immensly powerful Toshiba let alone if it was a slideshow looking beautiful at 8 FPS,your link and comments prove nothing.but the fact that you are a easily led by Nvidia/MS/toshiba marketing.

You can't seriously think that Dell or Alienware don't use this card because it is too new,I mean, come on,Dell for the last 3 or 4 years have just about had exclusives on the BEST most DESIRABLE high end cards before anybody else, certainly before Toshiba who have nothing like the industry influence of Dell.

So no,I'm not convinced, certainly not by the information provided by you and as far as staying out of your thread, its not your thread, its a public forum and at least I do you the service of stating my reasons for not agreeing and don't just demote the idea no matter how silly I think the idea is.

Bottom line is,if Dell were going to use single 8700M GT's in their new XPS,it would be here by now.I don't discount the idea of using SLI 8700M GT's in the new XPS model if the new 256bit high end card doesn't eventuate in a mobile form, but the likes of Dell and alienware know only too well the ramifications of releasing a new model that performs worse than the model it replaces,DX10 or no DX10.

"Futureproof" - LOL!

Seems DX10's already

SIGGRAPH 2007 was the stage where Microsoft dropped the bomb, informing gamers that the currently available DirectX 10 hardware will not support the upcoming DirectX 10.1 in Vista SP1. In essence, all current DX10 hardware is now obsolete.

Perhaps updating this to request DX10.1 would be better?

I think its high time for XPS M1730 to be released. With Santa Rosa chipset, DirectX 10 compatible GPU etc. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE not with that stupid design.

A lack of even a 8800M GTS upgrade for the 1710 is a serious smack in the face for users. It says a lot about why people run to other vendors when they come to purchase notebooks.

You OWN Alienware and you know how powerful the upgrade model is to owner loyalty. And yet you fail to capitalize on that. You'd make a mint selling upgrade gpu's. And you'd have loyalty like Toyota...
