Make A Wireless Dell

6180 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power.

ummm explain what you want to happen? Less wires got that part but what else?

08/07/07
reg - until we have a way to keep the text from going over the page, can you re-size your image here to make it smaller? Thanks!
davmcn
08/07/07
Yeah i noticed that also.
jorge
08/07/07
I like the way it illustrates the wired mess, if you make is smaller it reduces the effect.

If anything mirror the mac so they face each other, as in a face off!

It's Apple's new Image - posted Today (Tuesday 08/07/2007) - Taking a DIRECT swipe at Dell.

I think that Apple intentionally made the wires look like a real mess,
but the point is the same: too many cables can become a problem for the 'typical' home PC user.

08/07/07
Reg, how you been?

Good idea. Its high time an uncluttered wire-less system is available in the market. If Dell does begin something on this line, that will change quite a lot on the playing field.
davmcn
08/07/07
Totally Agree with You Reg,
i Bet they did that to make it look like a total disaster. It isn't that bad. Well it can get. But If you are good keep it clean and all will be good.
davmcn
08/07/07
another thing i noticed about the mac is nothing else than a Mouse is plugged in. Yes, I know macs have webcams in the monitors.
davmcn
08/07/07
Oh yah another thing sorry to admin the new mac as i am looking at all the pictures is pretty Nice.
jorge
08/07/07
We have a couple of the macs (similar design) with external hard drives and its looks as cluttered as the Dell :D no wireless external hard drive (yet), the Dell can have them internally so thats one for it, they can also use the wireless keyboard/mouse which reduces two USB cables.
davmcn
08/07/07
Yeah put them as bluetooth Right.
jorge
08/07/07
Right, have a few of those around here, looks sleek and clean.
premcv
08/07/07
Sleek and uncluttered. It looks awesome!
davmcn
08/07/07
yah except most desktops don't come with Bluetooth unless you do it on USB2.0.
davmcn
08/07/07
premcv
08/07/07
Oh, hmm, interesting!
davmcn
08/07/07
It is nice eh.
premcv
08/07/07
Yea, no cables, and no wireless receivers! :)
jorge
08/07/07
Well if you don't have USB 2.0 you may as well buy a PCI card with it because using v1 just blows.
davmcn
08/07/07
Yeah but most people these days. Don't think that is an issue.
twocows
08/07/07
Hm... that image. I can see two peripherals hooked up to the Dell computer, plus 2 more for the keyboard and mouse, one for internet, one for the monitor, and one for power. However, with Bluetooth (which should come standard, in my opinion) and Bluetooth devices, you can probably cut that in half, which makes about 3. That's the same as Apple's computer.

Also, I just noticed this: Apple's only including the monitor in their picture. Unless that's the entire computer, which I highly doubt, there are probably just as many more wires on the Apple. They still need internet connection. However, I've always liked the fact that Apple mice can hook up to the keyboard. My mouse cord comes out all the time, and it's a pain to get to the back of my desktop, which is basically in a hole that I have to reach into the back of to get to the mouse.
davmcn
08/07/07
Yah Got Yah there. Apple Computers are no better. By the way they are Slower.
twocows
08/07/07
I disagree. Apple's a wonderful choice for a computer. I have a friend with two of them (a desktop and a notebook) that I use regularly. They run great, and I would seriously consider buying one if it weren't for the price tag. A MacBook with no additional software or anything costs me about $150 more than a specifications-identical notebook from Dell. Hm... their prices have gone down. It used to cost me almost $500 more.
jorge
08/07/07
Well it would be nice if I wasn't forced into their whole dogma.
reg
08/07/07
The Apple iMac is a complete failure!

No built-in 120 ppm, 48,000 x 48,000 dpi 11"x17" 8-color photo printer!
premcv
08/07/07
LOL, reg! Built-in printer, who would've thought!!!
jorge
08/07/07
Don't forget the iPhone/iPod touch screen interface!
premcv
08/07/07
Come to think of it, I wish iMac did away with the Keyboard and mouse and used the iPhone interface. You tilt the screen the sensor adjusts, what say? But then it would become something like Microsoft Surface! And then they'll be fighting it at court, M$ and Apple!
bennish
08/07/07
so, reg, could you post a pic of the mac pro tower and lcd monitor that doesn't have cables?
premcv
08/07/07
Easy, just use Photoshop to remove the cables! :)
jorge
08/07/07
Well lawsuits asside, it would make for a cool computer, I'd just hate to see the screen after the user ate buttered popcorn or juicy bbq ribs.
premcv
08/07/07
Yewww and Yikes!!!

premcv

well said. i notice that imac has no external speakers, no usb drives, no nothing plugged into it.

dell can do that too - it's called a notebook. an imac is a notebook on a stand, without a battery. anyone care to dispute that? a laptop can have 7200rpm drives, it can have full speed ram...

basically the imac just takes a notebook, calls it a 'pc' and throws in some 'seeing is believing' crap and boom!

seeing is believing... gimme a break. just because it makes reg wet his pants...

again, reg, please post a nice pic of a tower mac pro that is just as neat with cables as the imac...

08/07/07
What happens when you want to add an extra HD or specialized card? With the Apple you are f_cked with no upgrade path.
I'll take the Dell and it probably costs 1/2 as much. I put my tower on the floor and never see any wires.
premcv
08/07/07
You have a point! But what if the cables are concealed so conspiously that it would be difficult to see them? It would be good to have a system that has only the keyboard and the monitor as depicted in the pic.

@kylie: True, there couldn't be much upgrade, but I think what Apple could be telling with this is that it is possible to merge the system and the monitor.
bennish
08/07/07
no, it's easy kylie. with macs, you can make the following awesome upgrades:

1. RAM upgrade.

See? So much choice!! Or of course, you can do a full upgrade in two steps:

1. Throw away Mac.
2. Buy new Mac.

let the good times roll...

08/07/07
Hey Bennish,
I am totally disagree Mac's are super hard to get new stuff. I've Tried. There Desktops have horrible Design!
bennish
08/07/07
davmcn... not sure i get what you mean, your sentence is a little jumbled... you mean you find it hard to install new parts in macs?

totally agreed kyliemanders. just get a dell laptop, turn the screen around, put it on a stand... you've got an imac.

its not rocket science, mr jobs.

p.s. 'you can't be too thin'? anyone see a potential problem with that? first intel with the black sprinters...
bennish
08/07/07

mmmm.... neat and tidy....

bennish
08/07/07
with a mac, your desk could be as spartan as this!!!
I just LOVE apple's selective advertising. If someone else made thin monitor-style computers, they'd rip on them somehow.

davmcn
08/07/07
Bennish what i mean is the parts on macs especially the one in the picture above is hard to install. I've tried they are not really designed that well inside.
davmcn
08/07/07
Yah like Dell. Well the one i did it on was a G3
bennish
08/07/07
.chris, if you buy a mac, and in a year want to upgrade, how do you do a custom order for that?

i agree davmcn. macs are nice, they're fine, but they're NOT better than everything else. they're just meant for a different demographic. some of us like to open things up and upgrade, and we buy pcs. Except some people seem to think those sorts of computers suck.

having one kind of mac compared to another kind of dell, that aren't meant for the same audience, is childish. pretty much sums up steve jobs' entire personality. a childish prick.
davmcn
08/07/07
I have to say something ---> Bennish --> i wanna say something I totally understand you. Me among my friends on so on. Anything Computerwise i am talked to they even ask me which company to use for this and that. I Recomend on what the "Customer" is looking for. Bennish is that you're Mac?
technikal
08/07/07
The iMac design eliminates just 2 cables - the cable connecting the monitor to the video card and one power cable. That's it. It's good marketing on Apple's part, but the truth is that if you option up the XPS with wireless keyboard, mouse and ethernet connections, you've only got 2 more cables max than the 'sleekest' iMac, with a ton more expansion capability.
bbr
08/08/07
I HATE wireless.. i abhor batteries and avoid them like a plague.
I do agree apple has less wires however, and it's a good striving for apple to reduce wire clutter.. but do NOT force people to use "wireless", you'll just pump out more radio waves, and using batteries is VERY bad for the environment.
premcv
08/08/07
Dav, you indicated that the Mac desktops have horrible design, how so?
davmcn
08/08/07
Well Not necesarily the outside it is the inside it is blocked from putting anything in by yourself. you have to like fight with it to get it in.
premcv
08/08/07
Oh, I see what you mean.
davmcn
08/08/07
Or you have to spend even more money bringing it to a local Apple Shop to put it in even they have trouble.
davmcn
08/08/07
Not to be mean reg, but isn't this site to tell us about Dell products not about a new Mac Mini that just came out?
reg
08/08/07
Well, months ago CUSTOMERS asked for A DELL MINI - ah, where is it?

Still waiting . . .
premcv
08/08/07
Why not a Mini-Me?
jct98
08/08/07
Sony and HP have these all in one computer. It would be nice to see Dell manufacture such a product. These types of computer are very nice to have in places like the living room.
jorge
08/08/07
Doesn't the Mac still add an umbilical cord straight to Apple Financial Dept.? :D
reg
08/08/07
ya, it's called iTunes

dell doesn't want to make a mini. look at the mac mini. what mac mini? where is it nowadays? EXACTLY.

davmcn, god no, that's not mine. I have a nice self-built amd system with a 22" all neatly put on my desk with some lovely creative subwoofer and satellites. i just found that pic on google images...

.chris, we're talking about UPGRADING here. what's the business about not needing to? If i get the top of the line mac, you're saying i'll NEVER EVER want to upgrade? what planet is this on, i want to go there

reg, your last comment - nice ;)

Yea, high time, don't you think?
technikal
08/09/07
I forgot about the webcam. For the speakers, can't you just get a monitor with speakers built in and run an HDMI cable to carry both signals?

The wireless keyboard, mouse and NIC cards can be used on PCs as well, so I don't see that as being an iMac specific advantage. So, it eliminates 3 cables, assuming you want to use a webcam.

Maybe you should have a few Apple-like Options?
For example, System76 has the Koala (http://system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=53) as an alternative to a Mac Mini. It's really nice because it's tiny, but is still just a desktop (I wouldn't buy one of them for myself, but I would for my parents).
An all-in-one (iMac-style) would be pretty nice, too, but I wouldn't suggest going the Apple route with it completely. Perhaps something like the following:
USB, Headphone/Microphone, Firewire (optional) ports on the front, Slot-loading DVD drive on the side (or maybe a laptop-style tray-loading option? I use lots of mini discs), etc. Maybe put the power supply outside in its own power brick. I would also suggest that you put at least one PCI slot in it (maybe 2 - one on each side) so that people can add PCI peripherals.
It should be cheaper than the equivalent laptop (obviously, otherwise why would anyone buy it?), but it's okay to make it more expensive than the equivalent tower.
Wireless keyboards/mice for both of these are a must (Bluetooth?)
Perhaps both of these (the Mac Mini-syle and the iMac-style) can be marketed as an appliance-style computer. This machine with Ubuntu preloaded would make a nice E-mail+web browsing+Word processor. A great grandma machine (and perhaps that's how you should market it).

Please quote the ratio of prices too, not just pictures. I don't want to pay 3 times as much to remove wires.

And Dell XPSM2010 is without wires, you can buy that expensive gizmo if you want something without wires.

exactly anime... as some of us are saying, the imacs are laptops without batteries.

You’re right, there are definitely some valuable ideas on this thread and we’ve been following it. I work closely with Dell’s Experience Design consumer desktop group and we've had similar conversations in the studio. A lot of people on this thread have talked about reducing the clutter and we couldn’t agree more, so we are working on designs that blend technologies and reduce wires. In fact we have done some conceptual development using display port technology that combines all of the necessary connections in a single cable to dramatically clean up the work space.

You may remember the Crystal Concept Display (shown above). In concept work like this, the team is developing solutions that can be introduced in future products. Your input gives us a chance to see how on target our direction is, and redirect if necessary. So keep the ideas churning and stay tuned. It’s great to hear from you.
jorge

That could double as a photo viewer, like a semi-frame on a wall, assuming the heat signature isn't as big as a jet exhaust port.

Whats the processor and power requirements of this Crystal Concept?

@bennish - over the past month, due to requests from the IdeaStorm community, we've increased the dialogue from the experts within Dell. Some examples are comments from erik_d, sean_d, laura_t, richard_b, john_p, bryant_h, matt_d, colleen_r, tim_t, amy_k, among others. They are not moderators, but experts called upon to join the conversation in their areas of expertise. We're hoping to bring more Dell employees into the conversation.

Moderators continue to have the dell_admin# username, but our experts will use their first name and identify their organization. The Dell logo is to signify that you can trust they are in fact a Dell employee, speaking on behalf of the company.

I need to post an update to the Moderator Update letting everyone know about these developments, and I will do that by end of week.

I hope the community will welcome Dell employees to the conversation... you've been asking for it, and we're working to deliver it. Thanks!

@davmcn - kontithegreek's opinions are his own, and I have not been able yet to validate that he is in fact an employee. So no, he will not get a Dell logo next to his name.

Ok. Understood. i was just wondering there are many Employees on this site so i was just wondering.

The only reason that the mac has so few cables and stuff is because it is as powerful as a laptop. Actually my laptop is more powerful than that mac. So really its not fair to compare the two... sure you might get more cables with the XPS 410 but you also get more power, options, and the ability to upgrade in the future... i'd like to see someone try to fit dual 8800's in that mac.

no the dell design that DELLHOPE_I posted
bennish
08/16/07
the idea isn't that things look like macs, it's that they use a similar no-cord concept.

though not too similar... mac's way (glorified laptop on a stand, with misleading photos and an exaggereration of a competitor's product) isn't the best way.

bring on that dell concept. it's sweet.

p.s. thanks for the explanation dell_admin, so i guess no normal user is able to have a dell logo regardless, so if we see one we know it's official. i like that.

davmcn, I like the design of both. In fact, one reason a lot of people buy Macs is because of their nearly-flawless design. Most computers look blocky and have all sorts of cords; Mac computers almost never have all this convolution. I think Dell should follow this example, at least in terms of design.

I've been enjoying Apple's new stealth weapon
- the 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo Mac Mini
- the mighty little box.

http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html

Only 2 cables: Power Cable and the Monitor Cable - everything else is wireless or connected through the network.

[10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet, 54-Mbps wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate (ERD) up to 3 Mbps]

The only way they could improve it would be to have it come with 2.0 GB RAM / 160 GB HD Standard - so Vista could run on it (for people who are forced to use it.) An nVidia mobile GPU upgrade for the graphics with it's own dedicated 512 graphics RAM would also be cool.

How's the sound?
wayfarer
08/20/07
This is a highly controversal idea. In some ways, it is pure genius. No wires! It is PERFECT!!! But then again... I like wires. Examples: Wireless sound sytems. Useful. Wireless mouse. I don't want a wireless mouse. That means the mouse has to have batteries, and makes it heavier. Plus, in playing games, such as FPS, any lag at all means death. I don't want a wireless mouse. Wireless Keyboard? Yeah, that would be useful, but money? Come on guys, this is why macs are more expensive. I think there should be options when buying the computer. You should be able to tell Dell what you want.
