Dell Mobile Workstations Need Numeric Keypads M90/M6300

280 points posted to Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Precision Workstations by pauln 08/28/07

Dell needs a numeric Keypad on "Mobile Workstations" M90, M6300 types. HP has had a numeric keypad for a While on their mobile workstations. If these are oriented towards CAD applications, then give engineers (who deal with numbers daily) what we need, a numeric keypad and utilize some of the wide open space on this 17" notebook.
It wouldn’t cost much more and for the price they should give us what we need. It’s not like they have to invent one for notebooks, they are already being made!
Also allow us to turn off the touch pad so it doesnt get bumped when using the keyboard, we use a mouse and 3D motion controllers to navigate our applications!

Its really disconcerting to see that even the consumer Inspiron 1720 which costs almost half of the Precision has a numeric keypad.

Like you've mentioned, HP's equivalent model already has a numeric keypad. I have no idea what Dell is thinking, but I'm considering getting the HP instead for the keypad. While I can live with not having a keypad for my 3D applications, I find it very counter-productive not to have one when I work on After Effects or other time-based work.

Put one in Dell!

I agree 100%. Include a keypad in future designs. This would keep users from having to purchase a USB or wireless keypad.

Excellent idea. This would make mobile computing much more enjoyable.

I'd rather see this with the extra space! (bigger letter keys)

Seriously... People who make use of a Quadro are, in general, people who are utilizing a lot of numbers. Entering dimendions, color values, quantities, etc. via the top numberkeys is EXTREMELY inefficient, and very troublesome. I have an XPS system for personal use with an integrated number pad. The platform configuration is already available to have a Quadro, a number pad, and Windows XP in the same computer. PUT IT IN! Dell is not getting a ~$3000 sale because of it.

Get this model mix available within the next month and they might just get a sale for anouther laptop for buisiness.

Completely agree... I would probably have snapped up an M6300 by now if it had a separate number keypad (and probably faster if it was just a teeny bit better looking !)
