Design - Stickers?!

120 points posted to Simplify IT, Laptops by chinstrap 10/06/07

Okay I am typing my note a second time after this silly website timed out or did something crappy to delete my first 5 minutes of typing note... Note I am not a techie.

I just got a Dell laptop and desktop issed from my new office. I switched to Apple for my home use about 3 years ago.

My advice to Dell is to follow Apple's lead with respect to design, style and innovation. It's like nothing has changed since the 90s with the PC, Microsft, Intel, stuff..

Here is one usable idea. Stop putting the annoying stickers on laptops right on the wrist rest area. They dig into your wrists and then when you try and take them off they leave an even more annoying sticky residue. After lysol, windex and my wife's nail polish remover, I got the residue off and started to take off the top smooth layer of the wrist area - annoying!! And all this on a brand new, top of the line Latitude (as my tech guys tell me). It's just an okay laptop if you ask me..

Dell - if you want to evolve, try innovating like Apple. Don't you have testers who use these machines in the real world tell you not to put those annoying stickers in place while telling you about other aspects of the computer? What about a mag connector for the power cord.. These are super simple and slam dunk ideas to implement.. I just don't get the process with the old school companies.. It's like GM and Ford trying to make better cars vs. the Japanese and Germans.. They have no clue how to build something what the consumer wants.. The average consumer want a computer that will do email, Internet, office, download photos, and music really well as that's probably what 90% of what people do..

I like the stickers on it as long as they do not fall off...

Can all the stickers be concealed in a hologram davmcn?......;)

The stickers need to be on there, perhaps in a different location as they do rub on your wrists and peel. Many people don`t know what they have, so the stickers are necessary.

Maybe they could be stamped on the case in ink or paint.

HP used to have an option where they would charge $1.00 to put the stickers on a laptop during build

I also like the stickers and think that they should still be kept (just so that chinstrap knows the reason for my demote).

Dupe! And a multi dupe at that. Yea, the stickers must go, it makes the computer look like a NASCAR computer, like we've said before do the cars in the Dell Executive parking lot have the same amount stickers on them?

Perhaps juzzz one sticker with all the Dell specs, much reduced in size....at the back of the system.......;)

But anyways Dell need not follow apple, I promoted this for an alternative sticker...for a different location....;)

Wow - I can't believe all these people commenting. I just googled to find a site where Dell could receive my suggestion.

If I really cared I would take a photo of my new latitude with the area that got screwed up by my scraping with nail poish remover to remove the sticky stuff. It is still functional but looks stupid on a brand new computer.

Off topic, I had to call my tech guys (24/7) at my new firm to help get the sound working on the laptop (working from home this weekend). The drivers were not working or loaded so we went to the Dell website (he took me remotely) and loaded a Intel and Ricoh and Audio driver to get sound working so I could watch a roadshow presentatoin I needed to. Second, to get me on my home wireless network which my dell could not read or find, I had to load some Windows Wireless Zero something and push run and system 32%/backslash crap. So I needed to do 2 strange things, one with the help of 24/7 tech guys to get SOUND and WIRELESS working.

Again, on an Apple it would just work...

I might post some pics of where the stickers were on the keyboard but I will use my Mac to do this as its iPhoto rocks

Hi Chinstrap-
- Perhaps a sticker on the "left end" (mosttly we use the right hand)
- Perhaps a slighter depression on the "left end" (mostly we use the right hand ), the sticker can be fitted into the depression and a glassy fabric seal can be used to cover it and to make the surface plain without any hassles. The glassy see through fabric will reveal those stickers
- Perhaps avoid the stickers and the fuss about it...provide the customers with a "ID card" with all the stickers, service code numbers, order number etc etc..all duly listed out and highlight the customers with it's importance and "instruct them to keep it safe"
Will this work out Chin strap?

If Dell can't use Microsoft or Intel without putting the stickers on, then put them in a spot where they won't interfere with your wrists. Do people know what I am talking about..? You know on laptops there is the space beside the trackpad and below the keyboard where you rest your wrists on while typing on laptops (This design was brought mainstream by Apple I believe.. before I was a convert). Stickers shouldn't be put on the left or the right side as we use both hands for typing. I hope I have explained the area where I am talking about. The stickers could go on the outside of the laptop or on the bottom of the flip up screen where there is a bit of space.

The idea about depression covered by glass is overkill IMO. Why spend $ on something which shouldn't be there in the first place with some high tech solution? Either 1) Don't put them on or 2) Put them on in a place that doesn't rub your wrists..

Then spend money and R&D to make Dell computers work better..

@Chinstrap- thanx for your response...well ....you came back with the exact point "we use both hands for typing"

I juzz want to say either, dont have them on or have them in a place where it will not harm your wrists....
Better dont have them on.

Dell is the worst computer corporation on earth! I've had so much bad luck with them, I finally made the switch to HP. Faster and much more RELIABLE! People who use Dell have to be out of their mind. I have had 3 Dells. One for 2 years, one for 2 weeks, and another one for 5 days! Please, go somewhere else, anywhere else but here!

chinstrap: "Stop putting the annoying stickers on laptops right on the wrist rest area"

1) They are NOT anoying to me.
2) I don't like "stop putting" as I still want the stickers to be on my systems. A better suggestion would be "Give users the option to opt out of getting".

davmcn: "to say the least i like the stickers on the pc's"

If that is so then you should have demoted this idea, not promoted!
