List Power Details when configuring a computer

1820 points posted to Desktops, Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage by rotthund 10/15/07

When ponding the power consumptions of a CRT vs LCD display, I saw the Dell confiugation doesn't list a desktop's power supply details, nor it's typical power consumption. Monitor specs list those details. List those details on Dell computers, and show the estimated effect the configuration has on the computer's power details.

Is power consumption something that can be that easily gauged? I would htink that what your "typical" consumption would be would vary greatly from user to user.

It would be nice to see at order-time, but even if this were a support.dell.com feature on service tag lookup that had "estimated power consumption for original configuration", it'd be a big help. On the larger server platforms, the nominal power supply wattage isn't particularly useful, as they typically only one and at most two different power supplies to select from. These must be sized to support a (atypical) fully configured machine, so sizing requirements to the max rating of the power supply is unreasonable.

By the way its actually termed "Computon".

Def:
computon n. in information technology, a measure of power or capacity of
devices or systems such as storage, networks, or computer processors.

There are a couple java based system wattage estimators online that are pretty accurate most of the time. I would actually trust them more than anything a company that builds systems would produce.
