Support Space Ship One

-160 points posted to Dell by badblood 10/31/07

Scaled Composites SpaceShipOne completed the first privately funded human spaceflight on June 21, 2004. SpaceShipOne was developed by Scaled Composites, Burt Rutan's aviation company, without government funding. On October 4, it won the $10-million Ansari X PRIZE, by reaching 100 kilometers in altitude twice in a two-week period with the equivalent of three people on board, with no more than ten percent of the non-fuel weight of the spacecraft replaced between flights. Development costs were estimated to be $25-million, funded completely by Paul Allen.

Developing the capability to escape the boundaries of our home planet is one of mankind’s most spectacular achievements and has enormous potential significance to the future of the human race. Already, our limited exploration of space has changed the way we live and think, from instant global communications to a better understanding of climate change. Space travel to date though has come at enormous expense, not just in financial terms but in its environmental impact and the personal safety of those involved.

Dell should recognise that private sector innovation is often the key to radical improvement. Dell needs to improve its history of promoting and investing in breakthrough technologies.

Dell should acknowledge that it is in mankind’s interest to develop our knowledge and understanding as well as our access to space. For this reason Dell should undertake to support the development and commercialization of this completely new approach to manned space travel - made possible by Burt Rutan and SpaceShipOne. In doing so, Dell will enable many thousands of people across the world to experience space for themselves and help to unlock the potential benefits that will come from safe and affordable manned space access.

jervis has vision jorge. You should view him as a role model.

premcv also lacks vision.

Well you will lose some, and you will win some!

But come on, how is it connected or even related to what Dell does or should do?

Support the future and the future will support you. Kick in some money now and when it goes commercial they will need computer systems in the office and such. Maybe get a "sponsored by Dell" sign plastered to the side of it(great advertisement).

Nice try, jervis! Now this is where the idea about being able to edit the votes can come in handy!

@all: Have anyone checked with bathow whether they have any plans to implement changing our votes?

Its in version 13.2 due in 2012.

I like the plane, dump the rocket... space is a waste...

Does Dell get its LOGO plastered all over this thing?? If they get advertizing space, then they might consider it... but what's the VISIBILITY????!!!

Well the project has made the news several times. If it makes it to being a commercialized project it could be worthwhile.

Now there is always a negative side to the advertisement like if it blows up or something. It would be like Microsoft plastering "Windows Vista" all over a NASCAR car, image all the jokes that it would never finish a race because it keeps crashing. :)

Sorry badblood, but my vision has always focused on fixing the local things to earth, I don't like the cop out of leaving Earth to find a solution, yet leaving Earth in a bad state.

Besides the logo will probably cause it to burn up on re-entry.
premcv

Good point, jorge, when it re-enters, there might not be any logo!

:-D ... good one, jorge. Tho I doubt we'll ever come close to solving the most critical problems on this earth, we DO know we have the ability to die trying!

StarGate! I once wrote a short story way back titled "StarGate"! They stole my idea! Only if I had saved my story, I could sue and piss everyone off! Ok maybe not, but they still stole my story, well I had less chicks in it, so their's does have better characters.

Still, there are more Dell's in TV shows and movies as of late, but they totally lost out in not putting them in the TV show The Office, I did think they had Dell when the show started or am I wrong? As long as they don't use a Dell laptop and can directly connect to an alien ship it will be OK, I don't want Alien compatible computers, its just wrong.

Rather than putting Dells in TV shows, if they'd shown the same interest in the top-most ideas here on Ideastorm, it would've definitely made a lot many people happy that Dell, for once, is upto something.

But somehow I have a gut feeling that some announcements are forthcoming in the next few weeks. I sense something going to happen.

Yea, we'll all be banned.
jervis961
10/31/07
WooHoo, can we get a bumper sticker "Banned by Dell"?
premcv
10/31/07
I'd be the first one with that, I can guess!
jorge

"Dude, you've been Banned by Dell"
jorge

or "Dude, I've been Banned by Dell"
jorge

Third times the charm:

"Dude, you're getting so Banned by Dell"
premcv

or:

"Dude, they did it to me"
jorge

I can foresee the announcement stating: "Dell Customers, the ideas you have provided has caused us to now introduce the widest range of products aimed at your requests in FULL!" with all ideas implemented in full, followed by a story in the Wall Street Journal titled: "Dell files for bankruptcy!"

ROTFLMHO! Stop now, jorge!

One nitpick: SpaceShipOne didn't escape the boundaries of our home planet; it didn't even achieve orbit, and can't survive the heat of reentry so orbiting isn't an option for it.

That said, I get what you're saying about supporting efforts to make space travel affordable. I just saw what might have been (or encouraged in others) a misconception about space and felt compelled to speak up.

I wonder if this will come first before the implementation of votes or the flight of Space Ship One?

I would support finding better methods of exit and reentry that are affordable first. Leave the overspending to Nasa.

The entry system of spaceship one is unique and prevents reentry burn. It floats down like a shuttlecock. The Dell logo would not be at risk.
premcv

Well! More advertising then!

IF it was big enough to be seen on the way in.

On its entry it will write out Dell! That could be visible.

Just the logo would be better.

The shuttlecock is unique, and a marvelous idea. But SpaceShipOne never achieved speeds approaching orbital velocity, so there was much less reentry heat than an orbital spacecraft would endure, even with a feather. SpaceShipOne can't survive reentry from orbit, so far as we know. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_reentry#Feathered_reentry

I know. Thats why instead of Supporting Spaceship one, they should build their own!

Yup, build your own spaceship and become an overnight billionaire!

They already are billionaires, thats the problem!

This idea is silly. By the way: is this really a space ship?? It looks like an anti-aircraft missile!

well yes it really is a spaceship.

SpaceShip Two is on the way, sponsored by Virgin, who have set up Virgin Galactic.
