Ideastorm: to recognize new participants, ADD a 'top RECENT contributors' list

170 points posted to Dell Community, IdeaStorm by phubert 11/27/07

The Top Contributors list has individuals who likely are NO LONGER participating as well as many who've BEEN participating for quite some time.

How do RECENT contributors get recognition?

If it is desirable that NEW participation is to be encouraged and that RECOGNITION is one way of doing so, then the site needs a 'recent contributors' LIST.

Dell: find more ways to -encourage- broader participation!

Sure why not. It always bothered me that people who came to the site 1 time and posted an idea get to be on the list while people who participate everyday get no recognition.

8 out of 20 people on that list only submitted 1 idea to get there. 3 of those 8 never voted on anything except the vote that is automatically submitted on your own idea. TOP CONTRIBUTORS... I say bottom contributors is more like it. Make the list based on participation. Give some credit for posting comments, voting or time on site (they can track it like they do on the forums).

Not enough affirmation from your family?

Actually I'm fine, thanks expatinasia but I think Dell needs to recognize newer people too. The site needs new people to keep the ideas flowing and if you don't recognize them they will give up and go. Someone late to the party can still participate just as much and sometimes more than the first person there.

@phubert - great idea! I agree that newcomers should be welcomed and encouraged to stay, and recognition may help that. While it would be fairly easy for us to do what you have suggested here, keep in mind that we have tried to keep the complexity of the site to a minimum... with a focus on simple features. That said, I'll ask the developers and designers if we could do this fairly simply and will let you know.

Perhaps make it in the same page as the top contributor list? The page would show the top overall contributors and top recent contributors. The question is do you want to exclude the top overall contributors from the recent list? While it would make more room on the recent list it would not give credit to the people who continue to contribute on a regular basis.

I don't think we should exclude them but just wanted to throw it out there for discussion.

@dell_admin1 - varlinux.org has a 'top posters' list... Nick put in a check on last login date. Any that had not logged-in within 30 days are not displayed. That way, at least, only _active_ members are listed... it moved 5 people onto the list and seems to have sparked more interest BY those members! I don't know what information you may have on users that you could apply... VL also has "member since" information which, if this site has such a record, would enable perhaps a separate tab "Top RECENT Contributors" or somesuch... I know it will take a bit of discussion on your side.

this is a great idea.. if it were implemented with some sort of posting area dedicated towards each user.. so we could welcome in the new peeps.. I know this isn't supposed to be an open forum, but this would help build a community.. this site, whatever else it claims to be, is still just a social networking hub.. and that extension would help to make this society a bit more active, tight-knit, with as many ideas as possible being posted..
