Make PC 8500 RAM and Turbo RAM standard

Desktops and Laptops submitted by wallyhorse 2 days ago

This level of RAM (PC 8500, 1.067 GHz) is already being offered on Lenovo's new level of laptops, and is something Dell should also be looking at doing on ALL of its computers (as opposed to the current 800 MHz RAM for desktops and 667 MHz RAM for laptops).

In addition, Dell should also offer a Turbo RAM option (Lenovo also currently offer a 2GB Turbo RAM option) on all of its laptops. Comment »

New Inspiron Mini Design

Inspiron products submitted by brokencrystal Yesterday

I know it's too late for the first generation of the Mini Inspiron, but this idea is for the second generation.

Instead of having the mini look like this:

Could we please have the upcoming mini look like this:

The XPS and Studio notebooks look so much nicer than the leaked photos of the Inspiron Mini, so why not make the next version of the mini look like the XPS or Studio, just much smaller? Maybe you could make a higher end mini notebook called the XPS Mini or the Studio Mini for those of us who have to have top of the line in a small package? 9 Comments »

You Ask Us Questions

IdeaStorm submitted by brokencrystal Yesterday **UNDER REVIEW**

Why don't you guys (Dell R&D) ask us some questions on ideastorm and let us vote on them like we do now? This way if you guys have an idea you want to include in an upcoming product, you can ask our opinions and let us promote or demote the ideas. This would be much better than developing something, then waiting for us to complain about the finished product. I am sure that costs you money in sales, redesign, and development.

Publish the Vista to XP downgrade numbers!

Dell Community submitted by aikiwolfie Yesterday

Please publish the Vista to XP downgrade numbers so we can get a better idea of who's using Vista and who's using XP.

The reason I am asking for this is I don't believe Microsoft's hype about the Vista install base is accurate. 9 Comments »

The Next Big Thing: Gas-Powered Computers!

Environment, Desktops and Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by noxo Aug 9

Picture this: The Ultimate Portable. Free from the constraints of electric wires, you can go anywhere! This computer will run off the same gasoline that you can find at any gas pump. Put the gas tank under the bottom of the system, and mold it to create a comfortable, user-friendly bottom that can sit on their legs, thus bringing the laptop back to the LAP again! The small engine can sit out of sight and out of mind on the back of the system. The cooling fans can pull up cool air from the gas tank underneath it, also creating a quieter and cooler computer. On the side of the system, it will have a filler neck that is identical to a car's so that you can fill up at the pump. No more need for charging batteries anymore. Experts say that gas prices will soon be dropping dramatically, so this will save you a ton of money too!

Of course, Dell engineering will need to create a design for this idea, but below is a picture to get a general idea.

Gas Powered Computer

This idea could also be expanded by attacking a larger gas tank and engine, the possibilities are endless! Just imagine an engine that powers your car and your laptop at the same time. You could do this with any vehicle. Laptop-motorcycles, Laptop-planes, Laptop-trains, Laptop-boats, or anything that needs an engine. 123 Comments »

Driver NAMES!!!!

Dell Web Site, Inspiron products submitted by comprevolution Aug 8

So, i'm reinstalling windows xp on my inspirons 1420 and 531 and i'm really dis liking the fact that ever driver when i download it is named.
R12423508 which tells me nothing about nothing. I know that isn't across to board with other companies. I download an Nvidia driver from the Nvidia site and it says what it is. Could you please look into renaming drivers. even if it was just the brand or company of the hardware. but something like

Nvidia 8600 GT 2.7.2008

company| model or item | date created

this could be in any variation. 4 Comments »

Give us more Vista 64-bit options!

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by qwik Aug 9

Come on, 4GB is a standard now and we need Vista 64-bit on all XPS desktops. Honestly, you should have them on every computer you make now. Yes, compatibilty is still a concern but I'm a hardcore gamer and everything works perfectly. Retailers are starting to stock 64-bit in a major way. Dell.com is behind and should catch up. 1 Comment »

Faster BIOS updates

Service and Support, Software, XPS products submitted by qwik Aug 9

In the XPS 730 you ship an EVA 790 motherboard but you can't install EVGA BIOS updates. You have to wait for Dell to qualify a BIOS then we can install it. For XPS gamers, we need those BIOS updates faster. It takes you months to get a BIOS out and by the time it comes out EVGA is a few iterations in front of you. The BIOS updates help stablize overclocking, etc. Release these faster. Comment »

Equip Upcoming Notebooks with ATI XGP Technology!!

Gaming, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by q0987 Aug 3

ATI XGP™ technology (eXternal Graphics Platform) is an external graphics solution for notebook PCs. ATI XGP is designed to deliver dedicated GPU performance on a notebook PC equipped with an external PCI Express® 2.0 connector.

Source: AMD Official Website I Watch video

PCI Express® 2.0 provides 4 GBytes/s bandwidth and supports ATI CrossFireX™ technology

Dell should equip their latest notebooks (Centrino 2 refreshes) with this functionality. Or atleast for their enthusiast line (XPS) as it is what we, the enthusiasts, want.
Imagine having true portability with the option to plug in more horsepower whenever needed without additional heat/weight. Once you have this installed it will be future proof as it is a new specification (PCI-e 2.0) and all you will need to do is swap out the existing graphics card for a future one, from its external housing, instead of buying a new notebook. How cool is that!?

Drive upto 4 displays with a single card!

This has ALOT greater performance than the unfinalized Asus XG Station!
And it is available now!! Fujitsu Siemens have already implemented it into their 13" Puma. Do the same with the next M1330 and every other notebook. Make it a standard! 5 Comments »

Slot-in Drives should not accpet two DVD/CD.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ddguy Aug 6

In our new Studio 15, I got my first Slot-in DVD Drive and within 2 hrs of usage my 8 year old managed to jam the drive as the drive happily accepted one more DVD to be slotted in while one was already there. Of course, one could blame it to the kid but I see this happening to anyone as its not that tough to push the 2nd DVD in.

I have two ideas on this
1) If a DVD is already in the EJECT touch button (in the top multi-media button area) should lit up. This will serve as a visual pointer to the user and over a time users will get used to glance at this button before they try to slot in any DVD

2) If possible, there should be some kind of a simple mechanical interlock in the drive which prevents 2nd disk to be pushed in. How hard can that be to get a lever to come down and block the disk, once a disk is already in? 2 Comments »

Reduce the size/weight of the power adapter

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by yagogak Aug 6

Why the Dell power adapter are so big and heavy ? Specially for the M90 and dell XPS 17. Laptop are designed for mobility, the power adapter should be small and light. Apple do small adapter, i think Dell can do that.

And why the pictures of a laptop on the website never show the power adapter ? 6 Comments »

Dell Studio 15 fan noise

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by sebasti3n Aug 6

A BIOS update regarding this issue is necessary. The Studio fan for the GPU and CPU is program to work only when it needs to bring the temperature down by a few degrees (41c back down to 35-36c). In a quiet environment like a classroom it is quite annoying. Make it so the fan will run at a constant speed and keep the temperature from going up to high in the first place. By idling the fan, even if no task is being peformed on the laptop, the temperature will rise and the system fan will kick in. 3 Comments »

More Updated Video Card Drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support, Laptops submitted by kalparker Aug 7

Many of your laptops have ATI or NVIDIA video card drivers, but the only source to get drivers for them is through your site. You don't upgrade them anywhere near the schedule ATI and NVIDIA do for there desktop cards. It would be nice if you updated them more often or did something so that we can use the graphics card companies own drivers. There are bugs and performance issues in drivers that are fixed over time, and we dont have an option to get them. I mean if you buy a gaming machine like the xps laptops game manufactures encourage us to update your drivers, but the ones on your site are over a year old. Please find a solution so we can update the video card drivers more often to improve performance. 10 Comments »

Easy Moves

Education, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by passionpopprincess Aug 7

I was thinking about tiny little flip out wheels or some such thing on the base of my laptop so while its on my desk i can easily slide it out of the way to use my books while studying. I ended up making a little tray with wheels so I can move it out of the way easily. 7 Comments »

Back-lit Logo on Lid - Make as an option

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by nazukeoya Jul 30

Like Apple and Alienware, make the Dell logo back-lit as an option on laptop lids.

In addition, add the option to attach your own created logo to your order to make as a back-lit logo on the lid of your laptop.

It would add a charge to the order price but WELL WORTH IT.

This would be so rad...especially the option to customize the logo you have on the lid. too too cool. Comment »
