Build laptop less than 1.2kg for Asian market

Dell has to learn from fujitsu P1060 and 7230, both selling like hot cakes in Japan, Singapore and China. Small laptop is very attractive to Asian as most of them carry them to work by taking bus or train. Anything more than 1.5kg is consider heavy for traveling sales person.

Better video card in your notebooks

Hello Dell Team!
Why do you put in all your 14inches notebooks so poor Intel 950 graphic cards? I wanted to buy your Inspiron E1405, but when I realised that it is possible to have it only with Intel, I decided to start looking for a new notebook elsewhere.
So, my generic suggestion: You really should but some Nvidia`s graphic (not ATI which have really bad linux support) accelerators to your notebooks!!! As you did with XPS 1210!

Lighten the load and brighten the display.

I have a number of Dell laptops and what made me eventually buy a Macbook Pro was the lightweight and bright display. Of course, I could have never made the switch without Parallels, but after trying a MBP, I now know what's wrong with Dell's.
1. Too heavy. My MBP is light, svelte, and has great ergonomics. Dell needs to really trim the weight and shrink the box.
2. Too many choices and none of them are right. Apple, as an example, gives you far fewer choices and many less configuration options. Time to reduce the clutter and simplify the choices. I recently configured a XPS 1210 and by the time I was done, I couldn't remember all the options and canceled the order.
3. A nice bright, clear display can win the notebook war. I had a ACER 8104 and couldn't use it cause the display was so bad. The D620 and D820 are better, but not by much.
4. If you really want to start selling laptops, come out with a high end, less configurable, business laptop. Haven't you heard, we business people pay a premium for an Apple laptop and we're happy with them. Lenovo has stumbled with their Thinkpad line and I've just about given up on them. This would be an ideal time to come out with a very high end model for the business traveler. I'd order one right now if it was spec'd right and was lightweight with a great display.
I'd really like to see Dell back on top, but with what you offer me, I'd rather see you sell out to Apple. Get a new design team and get in the game! Believe me, there are users out there ready to spend upwards of $ 3K for a great laptop.

No OEM Junk software, revival of recovery DVD/CD's NOT partitions
Desktops, Software submitted by mgin2k3
05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
First, I hate it when I buy a computer and right when I turn it on out of the box, it's got a lot of junk software installed (AOL trial, Nortion Anti-Virus trial, etc). Get rid of these trial and non-trial OEM softwares or at least give the customer the option of not having them installed. I end up wasting so much time trying to uninstall all this junk anyways and I'm sure I'm not alone. I like having a clean install when I get a new computer (or when I'm recovering). And by clean I mean Windows (or whatever other OS the user may enjoy) and NOTHING else. Secondary OEM software can be included on a separate disc for the user to select manual installation (or request preinstallation of for new purchase orders).
Secondly, recovery partitions are terrible. Aside from the fact that they waste harddisc space, if the harddrive were to become toast or to be upgraded, not only would the user lose the original installation, but they would also lose the recovery data. Has this single point of failure not come to anyone's attention? CD's and DVD's can be preciously taken care and you never have to worry about losing both the installation and recovery partition all at once.

Better Notebook sound and features

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.
Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

Bring the Latitude to the Home/Home Office (Latitude equals Dell style and quality as it SHOULD be!)
Latitude products, Sales Strategies submitted by hotuan87

Compare the touch and feel of a MacBook to that of an Inspiron. It doesn't compare. The Inspiron isn't as stylish, and has a cheap plasticky feel. The MacBooks are solid, sturdy, and, if you have a MacBook PRO, made of metal. For college students such as myself who put our computers through the abuse of daily use, it only gets worse. My Mac colleagues, however, still show off their shiny (literally) only slightly beaten MacBooks.
The Latitude, however, is everything the Inspiron should be in terms of design and style. Don't limit the Latitude to just Business users, get it to your average consumer!
People shouldn't be comparing the look and feel of MacBooks to Inspirons, they should be comparing them to Latitudes!

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot
Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart
02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.
Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.
Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)
Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.
Would you try Linux if it were this easy?
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.
Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Higher-quality paint job

I've had my Inspiron 6400/e1505 since about September last year (so it's about 8 months old) and already a heap of paint has worn off the touchpad buttons. This shouldn't be: you would not expect the paint to flake away so easily. I'm not an overly heavy user of my notebook, but it's disappointing to see a grey plastic "hole" on my left touchpad button. A more durable paint job would be a great idea for people who use their Dells heavily.

Dell notebook style needs to be changed

Dear DELL, You should look at Apple and HP for lesson; they all come from behind Dell, but now their reputation and their products have passed Dell's; In my opinion, it is very simple; any products with good looking, fabulous and smart design will dominate the heart of comsumers; if Dell could design shiny, fabulous design laptop with webcam option and sell it for cheaper other brand such as HP, Acer... Dell will regain the number 1 of computer maker again.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
Software submitted by robinjfisher
02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.
