Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Projector built into desktop monitor

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays submitted by shrip 07/17/07

I am thinking about a regular monitor in the center of attention, which has a projector to beam some related or pheripheral information on the wall behind the screen. Tickers, (stocks, news, RSS feeds) or flickr photos could pass by on the wall, while you are working... OK, I it's distractor. But it could also be used to widen the display space, splitting up the information in a centered - high attention zone (onscreen) and a secondary zone offscreen on the wall. 1 Comment »

needed: display configuration for laptop suitable for outdoor usage

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by howardnyc 04/23/07

needed: display configuration for laptop suitable for outdoor usage... it would have the best possible set of configuration tweaks to maximize contrast, readability and reduce eye strain when in brightly lit situations... like outdoor seating at my neighborhood Starbucks <smile>

I have tried dozens of adjustments, but I really have no idea of which would be best, lacking sufficient documentation... 6 Comments »

Nanophosphate Batteries, the "juice" of the future

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by computer_bob 07/14/07

In today's world of instant gratification, one major slow-down is the time it takes for laptop batteries to recharge. The answer... Nanophosphate batteries!

Several companies are researching and developing this technology. In March of 2005, Toshiba announced that they had a new Lithium-Ion battery with a nanostructured lattice at the cathode and anode that allowed the battery to recharge a surprising eighty times faster than conventional batteries. Prototype models were able to charge to eighty percent capacity in one minute, and one hundred percent recharged after 10 minutes.

A123Systems has developed a commercial nanobattery. A123 Systems claims that their battery has the widest temperature range at -30C to 70C. A123 Li-Ion batteries charge to "high capacity" in five minutes.

AltairNano has also developed a nanobattery with a ONE minute recharge. The advance that Altair claims to have made is in the optimization of nano-structured lithium titanate spinel oxide (LTO).

Safety is a key feature of this new technology. In a nail drive test, in which a nail is driven through a traditional Li-Ion battery and subsequently through a nanophosphate battery, the traditional battery flames up and bubbles at one end, while the nano battery simply emits a wisp of smoke at the penetration site. Thermal conductivity is another great feature of the nano battery, with the claim that the nano battery offers 4 times higher thermal conductivity than conventional Lithium-Ion cylindrical cells. The nanotechnology they employ is a patented nanophosphate technology.

The convinience of the nanophosphate battery is stupendus. Imagine a rushed buisness man at an airport waiting for his plane. The plane arrives at the gate and he realizes that his laptop is almost dead. He needs to finish the presentation which he is to be giving in Tokyo (the whole point of the trip) on the flight. Luckely, he has a nanophosphate battery, so he simply plugs in his laptop for a minute or two before boarding his flight, and has a full battery for the trip!

This is the technology of the future. Dell needs to jump on this bandwagon and start devoting time and resources to developing this technology for their laptops.
Cheers,
Computer Bob 8 Comments »

Laptop Alarm

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 06/22/07

Make an alarm for laptops that makes them beep like buggery if anyone tries to move them or access them without the proper permisions.

Color code wires

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by fjrunyan 06/22/07

For those of us who are seriously techno-challenged, please color-code wires and ports (or whatever you call the holes that the things plug into.) Calling something a "USB port" means nothing to me. Also, it would be a great help to have the plug-in ports on a pad with an extension cord that could be brought to the front of the drive tower or box (whatever that thing is called) and seen in good light rather than having to crank the thing around and looking with a flashlight for some obscure little hole that's hidden by myriads of tangled wires.! And that brings up another point...leave enough space around each hole so not-so-nimble fingers can push in the plug without dislodging 2 or 3 others. Once they're plugged in, the pad could be moved to the back or left on top, whatever works. (You realize many of us do not have nicely outfitted computer desks. My tower is on the floor under my desk!) And check out instructions and definitions with people like me, who don't know a PC from an RV... and there are lots of us! 4 Comments »

Docking Stations for Inspiron and XPS notebooks

Inspiron products, XPS products submitted by jlatham 06/22/07

These days with the proliferation of laptops on college campuses the utility of mediacenter laptops, such as Dell's Inspirons, is hampered by the absence of docking stations or port replicators designed to work seamlessly with these computers. Dell's makes them for Latitudes, but seems to overlook this vital portion of the market. Anyone who has ever used a docking station at work to connect periferals yearns to have one at home...or at school. 1 Comment »

Create a 13.3" Ultraportable (Perfect) Latitude Notebook

Latitude products, Monitors and Displays submitted by mcfazeli 06/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Latitude notebooks are arguably the best you make, packing a lot of processing power while being a discrete business machine that is rugged and has a tough chasis that can withstand lots of travel.

However, your current D420 (D430 soon?) and D630 offerings are either too small or too big in terms of screen size. A high resolution 13.3" is the ideal screen size for the mobile power user. A 1440 x 900 resolution on the 13.3" with LED backlighting would be PERFECT. It would be more efficient than the 14.1" counterpart, but have more desktop real-estate for actually doing great work on the go (office work, photo editing, programming, browsing, watching videos, etc.)

The other specs for this KILLER ultraportable should be near identical to the D630 (not the D420) with a 1.3 mpixel cam thrown into the top of the screen. Naturally, 802.11n, SSD (32 GB, 64 GB) or HHDD (80 GB, 100 GB), are musts, and the battery life must be as good as the D630 as well. No preloaded software + Vista OR Ubuntu would be nice additions.

I'd assume such a notebook, fully loaded would weigh in at around 3.8 lbs with 6 hours of battery life and has the potential to be the #1 seller amongst mobile business professionals who don't want to carry around the bigger 4.5 lbs D630.

The m1330 has potential, but lacks the rugged business oriented chassis. But with the technology already in place, it shouldn't be hard to actually build the above notebook.

This is my DREAM notebook, and the first manufacturer that comes as close to it as possible gets 3 automatic sales from me. I hope it's Dell.

Built in mic and speacker for notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by gt_ng 04/26/07

It would be a good idea for Dell notebooks (especially Inspiron) to come up with built-in mic and speakers, at least for ease of use for audio conferenece elsewhere, rather to bring along headsets and mic. 3 Comments »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.

DELL/XPS Gaming Clothing and Accessories Store

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, XPS products submitted by guardianxps 04/26/07

Dell should have a branded store for shirts, shorts, mousepads, themes, jackets, etc which have Dell and XPS branding. Currently, as an XPS 710 customer you receive a very cool H2C T-Shirt. What about those of us with a M1710? I think this would be cool, and I suspect other people like me would buy a XPS/Dell or even gaming branded item. 2 Comments »

Now You Choose - Concept 2

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Decide” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Check out the latest Idea in Action on the new XPS 730.

Alternatives to plastics

Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by skippydaroo 04/26/07

Perhaps Dell needs to invest some money in an R&D center.
Imagine if you will the cost of oil is 10 times more than it is today, and the cost of copper is 5 times what it is today.
That means that using todays technology the cost to build a new desktop will be probative.
Perhaps dell needs to address the use of alternative products to be able to produce motherboards and the other components found inside a computer.
The case would be fairly easy to find an alternate for, but I would think trying to find a product that is environmentally friendly that can be used to produce PC B's might be a bit harder.
Heat sinks as well, particularly for a 3Ghz cpu is a fairly large block of copper.
Dell could look at alternate forms of cooling to reduce their reliance on this. 10 Comments »
