15" XPS Laptop

XPS products submitted by nosintake 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I think there should be a 15" XPS laptop. There are plenty of companies that have a 15" "gaming laptop". I think there should be a Dell XPS with a rotating camera, 1GB RAM, Blu-Ray player, and 80GB hard drive standard.

My next computer will be Linux or Apple

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by macsband 02/26/07

I've purchased five Dell computers over the past few years (3 desktops and 2 notebooks). My most recent purchase was an Inspiron E1705 in December. Upon powering up the machine, I immediately reformated the hard drive, thereby getting rid of Windows junk.

My first desktop used Microsoft DOS 3.1. Over the years Microsoft has provided less and less value at more and more expense with greater and greater intrusiveness. Microsoft has turned security updates into a marketing ploy to force less and less competition (which is pretty amazing for such an overwhelming monopoly.)

My next computer will have Linux or Apple OS pre-installed. I'm a loyal Dell customer, but if Dell does not offer Linux, I'll be joining the ever growing crowd switching to Apple.

Linux Support for Mobile Broadband

Broadband and Mobility, Linux submitted by militarygeek 02/26/07

Dell laptops can be customized to include mobile broadband, using either an HSDPA card for Cingular, or an EVDO card for Sprint or Verizon. The only this missing is Linux support for these options. If I were purchasing a new laptop, I would want to be sure that my mobile broadband would be FULLY supported if I chose to use Linux over Microsoft.

Mobile broadband, as well as the use of Linux, is gaining marketshare. Providing Linux support for these devices, as well as the support already provided if using Microsoft, would insure that Dell covers the widest possible market when it comes to mobile broadband. 2 Comments »

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by girishc 02/26/07

How cool will it be to have dual lcd screens - top one same as today - bottom one a durable touch screen + touch screen keyboard. Keyboard should appear only when required otherwise providing dual viewing area very useful for going thru code. I guess OS support is required for that. Just a idea... Comment »

Service Call Upgrade Options....

Service and Support submitted by cstradling24 02/26/07

It would be nice if you have a good warranty or pay a somewhat small amount that a Dell Tech could come out and install an upgraded CPU, or and upgraded GPU for the cost of that part minus the part that they are taking out. This would be much easier to upgrade parts and would inspire more people to purchase upgrades from dell. Comment »

Rugged and Drop Resistant Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by seraphya 02/26/07

Laptops should by default be more resistant to drops, shocks, falls, and water.

In addition there should be a line of laptops, or a special option to get extra rugged laptops that could be used in situations where you normally wouldn't take your laptop. 2 Comments »

Prices, and hardware.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by chronoswordsman3 02/26/07

I have had many computer illiterate friends buy computers, only to have them run extremely slow. Why is this? Because they bought computers pre-installed with AOL, McAffee, Music Match, and all this other useless stuff on a computer running windows XP with only a single 128 MB stick of ram, and the onboard video card used 64 MB of that!

So please, Do away with all the pre-installed stuff, just the OS with drivers, no more on-board graphics, and a MINIMUM of 1 GB of ram.

I also notice, that Dell can charge a pretty penny for a computer. You don't make A SINGLE PART that goes into it. All it is, is gathering the right parts, and putting it together, and loading the OS (and useless software). You can go around and buy individual parts and build a computer that out performs for no less then $600 less! I know you have to pay employee's, but most of them are outsourced, and are only making a few dollars an hour! Not to mention that the parts you buy would be in bulk, and much cheaper then a single unit that the regular joe would buy. Heck you can even go to other companies and get SLI computers for under $1000.

So in conclusion:

1. lean OS and driver install

2. MINIMUM of 1 GB ram offered

3. NO ON BOARD GRAPHICS

4. Lower ALL prices. Comment »

Stop suggesting Slim Desktops

Sales Strategies submitted by replaysmike 02/26/07

Every time I purchase through a dell sales rep, they always suggest upgrading to a slim optiplex case instead of what any other sane person would want. I made this mistake once, and it'll be the last. I ended up with a few PC's I could do absolutely nothing with due to the small PCI form factor, which is impossible to find cards for.

I originally wanted dual-monitor and ended up with a optiplex without dual capability, only to find out I had to hunt down a new video card (near impossible in the small form factor). I ended up throwing them both in the closet because dell wouldn't fix the mistake. Thanks Dell! 1 Comment »

Make a laptop battery that *exceeds* the warranty by more than 3 days.

Laptop Power submitted by replaysmike 02/26/07

Every dell laptop I've owned I've had to replace the battery on a yearly basis. It seems almost every time the battery dies within a few days or weeks of the warranty being up on the battery. I've finally resorted to buying them cheaper from other places as dell's batteries are more expensive and last less anyways.

I know, laptop batteries are notorious for heat issues and have a reduce life-span because of it. If the laptops would stop setting my pants on fire when I use it, they might stand a chance! Comment »

Linux on Dell

Linux, New Product Ideas submitted by dominiquebertrand 02/26/07

LINUX : Great Idea.

As a fervent promoter of Unix/linux since 25 years, I suggest that you don't focus on Linux as such, but on the functionalities offered.

Who cares about kernel 2.6.20 or 2.4.24...

what matters is : I want to burn CD/DVDs, I want a good office suite, I want to record and play music, watch and edit movies, I want to use Internet easily,

I want to print, I want to share networks, I want to watch/edit my photos, etc...

THAT'S ALL!!!

Don't put 3 softwares that can do the same thing. One good one is ENOUGH.

Keep it simple!

Copy MS control panel, so that no one has to learn another usage of the machine.

In brief, make it look like Windows. Forget honor and self recognition.

MS has put millions into research regarding the human interface. Just use it!

Make Linux look sexy.

Copy Vista if necessary. Side bar is a good Idea. Apple quick bar is nice too.

In short, take what is best from all worlds and blend it.

(Ie:Windows settings of the machine and Mac look).

Eventually, for windows aficionados, deliver free XoverOffice or VMware or anything like it.

If you want to win you need to deliver a machine ready to work without the need to purchase

additional software.(plug and run)

A good support site is extremely important. A place where you know you can find any driver for any peripheral. So first thing to do is to sort all hardware by categories + a search box.

Make drivers EASY to install!

(Also, after you plug in a new hardware... if the machine can't use it, it goes direct to the site)

You could also create a club of experts to help support. (best experts could win a machine...) 1 Comment »

HDTV QAM

Broadband and Mobility, Sales Strategies, Servers and Storage submitted by paazel 02/26/07

HDTV QAM TV Tuners that interface with Vista/Media Center is a feature that is not properly sold or marketed well. This could be an area where Dell could break ground & become a leader. Pricing for something like this in the $75-$110 range would be appropriate & very attractive. There is a company called DIVCO (http://www.fusionhdtv.co.kr/Eng/) which makes the hardware, the software support is very poor. If proper drivers could be written this would be a killer app.

I believe HTPC's will come of age in the coming year.

Other things that would be welcome:
A high quality audio/affordable sound solution (not creative)
Lead the way for E-SATA hard drives. The technology is there, the products are not. Comment »

Add the os installation steps in system box before shipped out to customer

Service and Support submitted by ken_li 02/26/07

In china, so many consumer customers are not familiar with the OS and driver installation steps.
when customer want to reinstall os, that charge much more time for TS to resolve it.
If we can put a os and driver installation steps hardcopy in system box, which can avoid many call and provide key service support for our real customer.

under the circumstance when os crash or can't find the driver, consumer don't want to find a solution on Dell website, they more prefer to give a call, and if we can't pick up it quickly, complain come soon. that is a bad loop.. Comment »

Customizable laptops

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by gfabrizzio 02/26/07

Why don´t create customized computers for different proffessional areas available around the world, using pre-installed software associated with each proffesional area.

example given: If I am an Architect, it would be helpful to have a new laptop with the latest software for my work (i.e.: Autocad, Corel, etc.) without other unnecesary software I won´t use in my career.

This idea can be work with Linux operative systems.
