Display similar refurbished computers after a customer configures a new Dell

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Environment submitted by getgreg Aug 10

To me one of the biggest frustrations of buying a Dell, is after you configure and buy your dream machine, you sometimes have to wait weeks for it to be built and shipped. Refurbished Dells, on the other hand, are already built and ready-to-ship.

It would be great if after you finish configuring a Dell, the site would search the refurbished inventory for computers matching your specs and give you the option to buy a refurb instead.

I bet a lot of customers who won't ever find their way to dell.com/outlet would take a cheaper, quick-shipping refurb if it's presented to them this way. Doing this would probably help move refurbished computers faster which will further ensure that Dell sees top dollar for them.

Also, moving refurbished computers before new computers will also help Dell's commitment to go carbon-neutral. By selling already built refurbs first, Dell ensure that they don't consume energy and materials building new computers when a refurb will suffice.

Seems like everyone wins on this one. 17 Comments »

Traing video for Ubuntu

Linux, Service and Support submitted by lightbulb Aug 1

Dell has a chance to stand out as a supporter of Ubuntu by actually offering people who would try it but are apprehensive, a tutorial on CD. Most new clients for Ubuntu are going to come from the Windows world and won't know (without a tutorial) just how easy it is to use.
Dell should offer one as an accessory on its site.

If you don't have one already, email me and I'll put you in touch with a guy who authored a 3 CD set for training on Ubuntu 7.10. 2 Comments »

Create a USB-Powered Aerosol Paint Sprayer that deletes any Linux partitions.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Software submitted by noxo Aug 3

Create a USB-Powered Aerosol Paint Sprayer that deletes any Linux partitions. This will be helpful for home and business paint projects. Include software that can track where the paint is sprayed, how much paint is left, and can be programmed to complete paint projects on it's own. Because the software will only run in Microsoft Operating Systems, it is also necessary for it to remove any traces of Linux, and install Windows over it automatically. 31 Comments »

Equip Upcoming Notebooks with ATI XGP Technology!!

Gaming, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by q0987 Aug 3

ATI XGP™ technology (eXternal Graphics Platform) is an external graphics solution for notebook PCs. ATI XGP is designed to deliver dedicated GPU performance on a notebook PC equipped with an external PCI Express® 2.0 connector.

Source: AMD Official Website I Watch video

PCI Express® 2.0 provides 4 GBytes/s bandwidth and supports ATI CrossFireX™ technology

Dell should equip their latest notebooks (Centrino 2 refreshes) with this functionality. Or atleast for their enthusiast line (XPS) as it is what we, the enthusiasts, want.
Imagine having true portability with the option to plug in more horsepower whenever needed without additional heat/weight. Once you have this installed it will be future proof as it is a new specification (PCI-e 2.0) and all you will need to do is swap out the existing graphics card for a future one, from its external housing, instead of buying a new notebook. How cool is that!?

Drive upto 4 displays with a single card!

This has ALOT greater performance than the unfinalized Asus XG Station!
And it is available now!! Fujitsu Siemens have already implemented it into their 13" Puma. Do the same with the next M1330 and every other notebook. Make it a standard! 5 Comments »

Make ubuntu version of laptop cheaper than Vista version

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by frz Jul 29

Hi,

I have tested the price of the Inspiron 1525 (in Chile) and the Ubuntu version (1525N) with the same Configuration. The result was disapointing.

1525 (Vista): $283.813 CLP
1525N (Ubuntu): $329.839 CLP

Why Vista is cheaper than Ubuntu? 2 Comments »

64 Bit Vista and more than 4 GB RAM

Desktops, XPS products submitted by dellrox Jul 24

HP has the option for 64 bit Vista and 32 bit Vista, why not Dell? Also, put the option in to XPS 620 desktops for more than 4GB RAM. You do this for Dell Precision Workstations, why not Home Gaming Desktops.

Look into this for me please. 9 Comments »

Operating System

Operating Systems submitted by ksnipersixfour Jul 8

This is just a thought, but what if Dell made an agreement with Apple, and started running pcs with Mac Os X, while still giving Vista as an option. I would certainly buy a Dell with a Mac OS X operating system. 65 Comments »

Dell Ultrasharp monitors

Gaming, Monitors and Displays submitted by gamer128 Jul 5

Could Dell make a monitor, that is specifically designed for gaming? And support consoles? And isn't very expensive? Because most HDTV's don't have very sharp quality, and those that do, are very expensive. 15 Comments »

MLG Gaming

Advertising and Marketing, Gaming submitted by gamer128 Jul 6

You know what I think? I think that Dell should be more involved with gaming. They already have one of the greatest o buy desktops ever, the XPS 630. Plus more gamers would want to buy from Dell. Maybe even hosts their own gaming competitions for XBOX LIVE. 7 Comments »

XPS Laptops

XPS products submitted by gamer128 Jul 6

I think this is the one question that most mobile gamers want to know. Will Dell make a laptop like the M1530 that is a gaming laptop? I don't mean like high end, just a laptop that can do well with most PC games out there. Think...imagine if Dell could partner up with NVIDIA to make a graphics card that is powerful to handle...like Crysis! And that when that graphics card gets old, or the motherboard, you could just get an upgrade just like the desktops. 21 Comments »

National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us.

Vertical Laptop Cradle/Docking Station

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thebittersea Jul 2

When I want to use my external monitor, keyboard and mouse my docked laptop gets into the way.

Often time, I need to push it out of the way. It would be really cool if we can vertically dock our laptop like a book on a bookshelf to save some table space.

something like this, but for laptops.

Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo Jul 3

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 13 Comments »

Fedora 9 on select Dell laptops and Desktops

Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by s33nagain Jul 3

Linux on the Dell laptops Have been amazing, so very nice. But your Linux videos completely enstate that Dell is all about choice. And, well, some users like Fedora more than Ubuntu. It doesn't have to be known this way, but some Linux Veterans lke Fedora more. And Ubuntu is more of a beginning Linux OS. I'm not saying that people who are long-time Linux user souldn't use Ubuntu.

I'm saying that some perfer a different "cup of tea" or, in Ubuntu's case, "cup o' coffee". And that's what dell is about.

In addition to the already distributed Dell computers that serve FreeDOS, and Ubuntu, we should add Fedora on select desktops and laptops. 1 Comment »
