Latitude products, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by aikiwolfie May 30

Dell please don't make the Latitude XT2 a Windows only device. Please give us the option of Ubuntu on the XT2.

And remember to keep the price reasonable this time around. 14 Comments »

Integrated GPS

Laptops submitted by pablohs Jun 2

I can buy a mobile phone with integrated GPS but not a laptop? I would like to be able to buy a laptop with the GPS already integrated within the unit. I am talking integrated, NO a third party card + cables + antenna option. 3 Comments »

Become a Linux leader, make Windows the option

Linux submitted by jonsmirl Jun 2

Install Ubuntu on every box Dell ships. Make Windows into the option.

This would require some real courage but long run it could increase revenue. Lowering the cost of computing always expands the size of the market.

As more people pick Linux only the budget used for Windows/Office would be freed. Some of that could come back as purchases of other Dell items. The cost differential is especially obvious on sub $300 systems. Who can afford to send Microsoft $150 in license fees on a $300 system?

Note , this is different than add Linux as an OS choice or make special Linux boxes. 25 Comments »

Subnotebook with Nvidia Tegra

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by mandarinka Jun 3

Some time ago, I suggested using ARM processor for small, long battery life subnotebook.

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10079896/Dell_EEEalike__using_VIA_CN_or...

NVidia has revealed its Tegra system on the chip for mobile devices, boasting its power efficiency and HD video decoding capabilities over Intel's Atom. I would like to see a subnotebook similar to Asus EEE or MSI Wind employing this cpu/gpu. It needs only a tiny PCB, power draw is about 1W for the whole thing, some models support IDE (or conventional harddisk drives), it's gpu is opengl 2.0 ES, allowing Quake3 at 35fps. It can also drive external display over HDMI. Needles to say, the whole thing could be able to run with passive, fanless cooling. Paired with a similar capacity battery as in MSI Wind and LED balckight display (10" or at least 9") the thing would have exceptional battery life - 10 hours at least. You caould probably stuff it into the same case as your coming mini Inspiron PC.

Save the Studio 1435

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by blomster Jun 3

Please include a 14" model in the upcoming Studio line of laptops!

http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/dell-studio-line-details-leak-out/

I really want to buy a thin 14" laptop with a matte finish screen, but Dell just keeps releasing/updating products that don't meet my needs. Latitude E might work but will probably be too expensive and probably won't offer Vista Home Premium. Comment »

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by tcpaulh Jun 3

Please stop using cheap LCD panels on your flagship XPS laptop line.

For example the M1530 although specified with 90-100 degree vertical viewing angles, the reality is that there is at best a 15-20 degree vertical viewing angle before colour inversion occurs.

Vertical viewing angles at present do not appear to conform to stated specifications!

Dell have been promising better viewing angles since 2002 with Ultrasharp screens but these screens are still not available across the XPS line of laptops.

Please sort it out Dell and stop using the cheapest screen technology in your premium products.

Thank you. 9 Comments »

Stop Selling DELL Laptops at Best Buy

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by gear Jun 3

DELL Laptops sold at Best Buy DO NOT HAVE WARRANTY SUPPORT OUTSIDE OF USA.

This dirty little secret is kept hidden from Consumers, who never get to see the warranty until after they take the system home.

Unless you are prepared to wade through the warranty before or after purchase, the first tine you find out that there is no service and support is when something breaks abroad.

I spent 3 weeks fighting with various DELL support agents, complaining on this site and it resulted in NADA action.

Dell basically do not care if their brand is sullied and damaged by selling their laptops at retail at Best Buy with sub-standard warranties.

Other manufacturers, like HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, will generally service their retail laptops anywhere in the world at an authorized service depot. 15 Comments »

Stop selling 32 bit machines

Operating Systems submitted by bbr Jun 4

As 32 bit software is slowly going down the void, 64 bits is becoming more prominent.

Vistra is 64 bit capable, and needed for your system to read more than 3GB of ram.

Stop selling 32 bit machines completely and focus purely on 64 bit systems, or at least make SURE that a buying customer is aware of what he is receiving. 7 Comments »

Explain why http://www.dell.com/open now gets me to Windows stuff, but not Linux stuff.

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz Jun 5

A while ago, Dell wrote "Dell will offer...systems with Ubuntu...available at www.dell.com/open". But when I got to http://www.dell.com/open today, I see "Dell recommends Windows Vista Business", links to a bunch of your pages selling Windows systems, and "We're Sorry".

Please put it back, or announce where it moved to, or explain why it went away. 22 Comments »

Some Suggestions for Your TERRIBLE WEBSITE

Dell Web Site submitted by jaws4096 Jun 7

Stop forcing users to start their build over and over, checking to see which product line magically gives them the options they want. Increase the flexibility and visibility of build options between model lines.

This is a general customer service comment about your website. My girlfriend is buying a laptop. After fiddling with your site for an hour, she asked for my help choosing a model. She said the website was extremely confusing. I assumed it was because Dell offers custom laptops, and she wasn’t sure which options she needed. But when we logged on together, it became clear that the website is complicated because you’ve attempted to dumb it down too much. You ask users to classify themselves according to home, small business, large business, or government. But most users don’t classify themselves this way. And it’s apparent that you are hiding models from users, based on that initial choice. Your model numbers are confusing, and depending on options, a “lower” model can easily cost twice as much as the next model “up” in your line.

Go to www.mcmaster.com and search for “tubing”. Notice how users can select specifications that they know, which narrows their search, but can leave out options they aren’t sure about? For laptops, I might want to narrow my search by case style, base price, type of processor, or any number of things. Perhaps it would be more helpful for your initial question to be, “Would you like to build a custom laptop by choosing technical features like memory, hard drive space, and processor speed – or would you like to describe how the laptop will be used, and we’ll try to recommend some features for you?” Then, instead of asking me if my PC is for home, small business, large business, or government / research use, why not ask me what I’m going to do with the bloody thing? Will I use it to run Microsoft Office applications like Word and Outlook? Will I be connecting to a wireless network at my home? At my office? Will I be playing 3D games? Will I be editing home photos? Editing photos for professional use? Watching movies? How long do I need the battery to last? Will I be working with large spreadsheets in Excel? Editing video? These questions tell you much more about what kind of features I need than your arbitrary and confusing questions about what “type” of user I am.

After a set of features is determined, show them to me in spreadsheet format, on one page. List each feature, like the amount of memory included, in the left column. Give a brief description like, “Memory is temporary storage used by your computer to run programs. For most people, 2 GB of 533MHz DDR2 memory is adequate. If you will be playing 3D games, editing photos professionally, or using large spreadsheets, 4GB is better, and you may want to consider faster (higher MHz) memory.” The, to the right, show me the current memory type, and the amount of memory, I’ve chosen. Next to the type, place an up arrow and a down arrow. The up arrow says, “Upgrade to 667MHz DDR memory” and lists an additional price. The down arrow says, “Downgrade to DDR memory,” and lists a credit amount. Similarly, up and down arrows next to the amount of memory give me options for increasing or decreasing the amount of RAM, and given an increase or decrease in price. For optional features, like software, give me a checkbox to indicate if I want it at all.

Anyway, this is my just-thought-of-it interface, and I’m sure you can improve the general idea. But you must do something better than the current system, which leaves buyers wondering if there is a model hidden on some other model line that would allow them to choose only the features they want, at a cheaper price. Your current website is a big, confusing guessing game, and I find myself going back and forth between pages, starting over several times, to get a configuration I like. Look at the web visit histories of your users and I’m sure you’ll find their behavior indicates a similar confusion. 1 Comment »

Advertise your Linux boxes as "Green"

Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Linux submitted by jmxz Jun 9

Network World has an interesting article here

" tests show that Red Hat Linux pulls as much as 12% less power than Windows 2008 on identical hardware"

With all the media excitement surrounding Green and Environmental issues, you could advertise how Green Dell is even in it's software selections.

If Dell ships 50_000_000 computers per year, and these computers live an average of 4 years each , and each computer uses 100W, it seems Dell could save the world

50_000_000 computers *
4 years each * 365 days/year * 24 hours/day *
100 Watts / computer *
0.12 (percent savings using Red Hat)
== 21024000000000 Watts

which is a number too big for me to count. Is that 21 Tera-watt-hours? Even if my math's off by 10000 Dell could save many giga-watt-hours. And that's only one year's production. 3 Comments »

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Something to think about 103 Comments »
