Windows XP and Blu-Ray on XPS m1730

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by houdini Mar 21

I am buying an XPS m1730 in a few weeks and whilst going through all the options on the Dell "customize your laptop" page I was very disappointed to see that I could only order a blu-ray optical drive with Windows Vista and not XP. This is a shame as I don't want Vista, but I want blu-ray. At first I thought it was because XP doesn't support blu-ray, but upon further investigation I came across this forum (located at end of post).

You need to ensure that if a customer is willing to spend $5k + on one of your machines then you should include all possible options available. For example you could say that if a customer wanted to have a blu-ray drive with a XP O/S then they would need to buy Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra to get the full use out of it, or you could just bundle it in a package package

9800 GX2 (and offer SLi)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, XPS products submitted by zanlok Mar 22

It has been released. The benchmarks are in. This is the new king. Alienware is offering it. Let's see an XPS 740 or XPS 840 that offers this card.

And allow ultra-enthusiasts to get quad-SLi. Even Alienware hasn't done this yet, even though the initial SLi drivers are released for testing.

256 stream processors, 1GB RAM, and a fillrate of 76.8 billion/sec. Wow!! 11 Comments »

Add Blue-Ray To All Desktops And Laptops

Desktops and Laptops submitted by aikiwolfie Mar 22

Now that HD-DVD is thoroughly dead and buried it's time for Dell to take the plunge and start adding Blue-Ray drives to all of it's desktop and laptop products. 25 Comments »

Remote hand-shaker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by doctorcox Mar 22

Computer users are presently able to communicate digitally and via voice and video and but no "tactile" communication is provided. This suggestion is to add a new I/O device as standard equipment to ALL desktop and laptop computer keyboards; an 8-way joystick where one person manipulates his/her joystick while another person feels the exact movements--in real time. In the send mode you would manipulate while the other feels your movements in the receive mode you feel the movements. Incidentally, the joystick would replace the arrow buttons and serve double duty as a traditional joystick.

This is a type of virtual reality. How would you like to shake hands with the President using the remote joy-stick? With this functionality you could actually "feel" someone else manipulating the joystick in your hand.

The "remote hand-shaker" is just a novelty to introduce the concept. The functionality could facilitate everything from very personal communications to remote "surgery" and other robotic-like functions by interfacing physically or digitally with the joystick. Ideally, all sorts of peripheral devices will be created by Dell and/or other third party developers. Someone will create the "killer app".

The framework would be owned by Dell giving them exclusive control over the commercialization and licensing of the concept.

Inspiron 530 with Windows XP Pro and "DataSafe" for sale, on your Customize site ...

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies submitted by hal2001 Mar 22

Why can't we have DataSafe and Windows XP Pro brought back for sale in a customize Inspiron Computer, not everyone wants Vista or to be force to go to a higer price Dell model or business machine to get XP or RAID 1. I'm sure most of us in this site are well aware that Microsoft will be pulling the plug on XP, but XP and DataSafe are a perfect match and would sell! Give the customers a choice and give then what they want ...Let's go Dell ! 1 Comment »

Give a choice of either Ati or Nvidia gpu's

Gaming, Desktops and Laptops submitted by theideasman Mar 23

Everyone is a fanboy to one particular brand and prefers their products, so why do some desktops and a lot of laptops only have one option. There should be at least one Ati card and one Nvidia card available for each machine so people dont have to go for the brand they dont want. Its only fair... 7 Comments »

Put both PCMCIA(Cardbus) and Expresscard 54 expansion slots in laptops.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Latitude products, Laptops submitted by mandarinka Mar 23

It's a bit silly that most addon cards available (like TV tuners, controllers, network adapters and mobile internet connection cards) are made for the Cardbus (PCMCIA) interface, now that a lot of laptops is phasing it out in favor of the expresscard bus. I agree that the future lies in the latter and newer expansion slot, but it would be great to still have some backwards compatibility in the years to come.

Therefore I would like to see laptops with both types of slots (just 1+1 probably), at least in the Latitude line. I guess it shouldn't be a big problem, at least in the 15,4" form factor. I have seen some Acer machines that supported this, but that just aint Latitude.

P.S. It would also help if these were not in rack (one atop the other) beacuse the cards tend to have this external thingie that is often bulkier and prevents the insertion of other device in the slot atop it. So give it a thought if it wouldn't be possible to put them in lateral possibtion, next to each other - under the motherboard or under the keyboard... That would be great, I'm sure design-conscious people (well, the practical ones, not teh apple stuff, I fear) would apreciate that. 9 Comments »

Service addition

Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by gthomas2 Mar 23 **REVIEWED**

Dear Sirs:
Would it not be possible for Dell to generate and maintain a list of all "Error" or "blue codes" messages and their meanings on your "Frequently Asked Questions" site??? I have a very expensive Dell Precision M60 Laptop that is totally unusable due to a message that essentially says, "Abandon hope all ye who get this message" and that it won't even let the computer START, due to possible damage!! Geez, the least I should get from Dell is an answer about what's wrong, which connot be too hard to figure out!!

Alternative data entry technology

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell submitted by jasko Mar 23

As the need for new ways to communicate with computers is enormous, DELL has a chance to outpace the competition by developing better data entry technology. When I-Phone uses gestures, this invention (US Patent # 7,038,659) goes beyond simple screen navigation, allowing unimanual text entry that’s a perfect solution for mobile computing and communication devices, such as cell phones.
Although still under construction, this site may be of some help:

Merged ideas should redirect to the ideas into which they were merged!

IdeaStorm submitted by winoffice Mar 23

Currently if I post an idea and it gets merged, I usually have no idea what idea it got merged into. What if someone follows a link to an idea of mine, only to see "Article not found" because it was merged? People should be able to know whether the idea was just deleted or merged instead, and if so into what idea. Also I might want to check if my idea was really a duplicate of the idea into which it got merged, or if not, which might mean that I might repost it.

At the very least revise the "Article not found" for such ideas to "Article was a duplicate of (such and such idea; do not forget to provide the link) and thus was merged into it." 2 Comments »

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Make a "Do not request" category

IdeaStorm submitted by millhauz Mar 21

Make a category, where all ideas (ideas, not posts, as many have more ideas in them) that have been reviewed and considered would be. Maybe as a list of things like e.g.

Chassis:
Slot-loading drives
Better plastics
More LightFX

Display:
Higher resolution
Displayport

This could help people from posting dupes, if there was a frequently actualised page of requested features... 4 Comments »

Dell should discuss the rumored ultraportable with us

Latitude products, Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jan 17

There has been much speculation about a leaked picture of a possible upcoming Dell ultraportable. Some say 13.3 inch others think it is 15" and some even speculate it is the 16" from the XPS they showed at CES. Upon magnification you can see it has the following visable: Slot load DVD, 2 USB, Ethernet and 2 other ports (display port and power?) on the left side. Also visable is built in web cam on the LED lit screen. It doesn't appear to have media buttons or a fingerprint reader.

The guys in marketing and developement must be getting sick of being scouped by Engadget and with all the flack they have gotten over the other recent releases (XT, M1330 and M1530). Why not create some good PR, scoup Engadget for once and find out some of the complaints while there is still time to tweak the system. Discuss this system Dell as it can only lead to a better product and greater buzz for it in the process. 46 Comments »

m1530 UK

Dell, XPS products submitted by d3fcon Mar 20

Hi,

I've been waiting for ages now for the penryn processors to be made available in UK. Also why are all the screen resolutions except for the 1280*800 unavailable.

I don't seem to be able to get a hard drive higher than 5400 rpm either...Is the UK the new dumping ground for all the worlds old stock? I wouldn't mind if the were cheap over here but DELL charges a premium compare to everywhere else. Whats going on..... guess I'll get the MBP instead and use parallels for developing...unless someone can confirm when I can get a decent spec... isn't the xps range supposed to be top of the line..... 11 Comments »

1920x1200 Screen for M1530 (like m4300 has)

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by kamujin Mar 20

The Precision M4300 has an option for a 1920x1200 display, but the M1530 does not.

The M1530 is a much nicer looking machine.

Can you offer a 1920x1200 screen resolution option for the M1530 without losing the built in camera? 11 Comments »
