D-Bay on inspiron lineup and trackpoint on inspiron lineup

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07

A modular bay is a very handy idea, I think dell should have it on all their laptop lines, like in times past, I like the idea of having the ability to have an extra battery or hard drive in my computer if i need it and can switch out my dvd burner.

I also think the trackpoint should make a return as well to the inspiron lineup, its a handy pointing device that doenst wear your fingers out as much as the touch pad tends to do. 4 Comments »

All Dell Laptops shoud have the TrackPoint

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by hadees 02/24/07

I really love the Trackpoint but not all your laptops have it. The touchpad is a pain to use while a Trackpoint will allow me to keep my fingers on the keyboard while also using the mouse. 6 Comments »

Bring the Laptop Nipple Back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by flooted 03/28/07

Remember the laptop cursor Nipple, replaced by the touch-pad. Well bring back the nipple, it's easier to use when you know how. Some Lenovo's have the nipple and the touch-pad. That's a good solution.

Actually I'm not even sure if Dell ever had Nipples..?

Well if they didn't, they should. 5 Comments »

More laptops with a stick mouse.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by arthurdent3 02/26/07

I noticed the trend of all laptops are moving away from the stick mouse and going strictly with a pad.

I for one cannot live with out a stick mouse and I find the pad most annoying.

Please keep these as an option for your consumer laptops also, instead of just the business laptops.

I have had many dell laptops in the past and now I am using my first IBM just because of the stick mouse issue.

Since you still offer it on the business models why not at lease offer it up as an option on the consumer models.

Even better how about a full size keyboard with a stick mouse integrated into it. 4 Comments »

Track Stick / Trackpoint / Pointing stick / "nipple" is a MUST HAVE

New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by keylime 02/20/07

As a CTO I am having to force our procurement department to supplement Dell with HP as our supplier of systems partly because Dell does not include a proper cursor positioning device on its laptops.

Dell needs a machine that competes with HP's nw9440 (or better). The machine needs at least the following: 17" WUXGA display, T7600 CPU, 4GB RAM, 100 GB 7200 rpm SATA HDD, 667 MHz FSB, DVD+/-RW, 512MB dedicated video RAM, and a pointing stick.

It also needs to be in a chassis that is built like a tank. There should be absolutely no feeling of flexing when it is picked up by one corner while the screen is open. Durability is far more important than weight.

A built-in video camera and a lighted keyboard would be very attractive too.

Finally, the keyboard should be as good as those on an IBM ThinkPad (specifically, the T30). By "good" I mean "with good physical distinction between keys as well as significant travel when depressing a key along with similar tactile feedback". I hate a keyboard where all the keys merge smoothly into each other and have flat (as opposed to concave dished) tops. 3 Comments »

Dell provide the option of a TouchPad-less notebook in your notebook product line and provide the nubbin instead

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jorge 06/30/07

Dell provide the option of obtaining a Notebook computer without a trackpad and instead only have the nubbin* (see definition below if unclear).

Here's a pic for reference (the red thing):

You'll still need to have a couple buttons below the space bar but no trackpad! The trackpad is the cause of many peoples carpel tunnel syndrome don't be the computer company to cause its customers to not be able to use a computer due to this. This will also clear up space so peoples wrists can rest more comfortably and also provide more space for your beloved stickers.

* Nubbin: (note there are many words use to name this device if you know what it is don't click below, if you don't well click with caution as most people don't use the same vocabulary as you might but it is what its called)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nubbin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trackpoint
http://foldoc.org/?nipple
http://catb.org/esr/jargon/html/N/nipple-mouse.html
http://xkcd.com/c243.html< This idea is or not have a trackpad at all and have only a nubbin pointer instead, not to have a nubbin and a trackpad, just want to be clear as most people tend not to read through, so hopefully this will clear it up for Joe/Jane one thought at a time.

no lighting available on laptop

Laptops submitted by howardnyc 02/17/07

while my IBM ThinkPad had its flaws, there was one nice thing which made it easier to use on airplanes, seminars and whenever I did a presentation....

a nifty eight watt light bulb which illuminated the keyword...

I just discovered -- the awful way -- this is not available on my INSPIRON 6400

lucky for me another of those presenting had another model (also DELL) and she was kind enough to lend me her clamp-on lamp (battery powered and now I gotta buy one for myself) 14 Comments »

LED Back Lighting

Monitors and Displays submitted by drew08867 06/28/07

Dell should transition all monitors to LED back lighting. More cost effective (in terms of energy use), greener, longer life. 11 Comments »

Use only the best and brightest LCDs for all laptops! No sub-par manufacturers need apply!

Laptops submitted by astudios 02/17/07

From what I understand, today's Dell LCDs on laptops are made by Toshiba, LG, Samsung, etc.. why make it an anticipating "waiting game" for the customer to see which quality of LCD they get when their laptop comes in? The LCD display is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT part of any laptop. Dell.. please, use ONLY the best and brightest LCDs on all of your laptops.

Quick story of my experience.. I'm a huge Dell-fan and buy lots of PCs and laptops from them for myself, my business, and for my friends and family. The LCD on their 700m laptops were the *absolute best* .. After that, I purchased the XPS1210. The LCD was "duller" and I was disappointed. But then I ordered the XPS1410 for a friend and when it came in, I was horrified with poor viewing angles of the LCD. The only way you could comfortably view the screen was when it was PERFECTLY square with your eyes! I was almost ashamed to give it to my friend. Finally, recently, I ordered the Inspiron 6000 (SXUGA?) and was relieved that is was much better. But still nothing like the 700m I used to own.

What happened to Dell's LCDs? Please make this top priority and bring the "wow" back into your laptops! (And oh, another thing, if you could somehow make your laptops thinner and lighter, that'd be great too!).

Thank you for allowing us this forum. 24 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Labtop keyboard with soft backlight

Laptops submitted by acquarian 04/23/07

Any ideas in making an optional on/off switch to have a a soft backlight on the keyboard of a labtop,

I find myself working sometimes in poor light conditions, and it would be a great idea to have a soft backlight to illuminate the keys on a keyboard. 8 Comments »

Universal power adapter (power supply) for all Dell products

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by rguptaos-dyndns 02/19/07

How many of us have to buy multiple “AC / DC Adapter or power bricks” for each of electronic devices and laptops? I have power supply adapter for home, office and travel bag… about 2-3 of these for my laptop, cell phone and external hard disk or other devices I use.

I have background in electrical engineering and I know technically it is possible to use the same power supply / adapter unit with some intelligence built in to power up cell phones, hard-disk, laptops, speakers, mp3 players etc. I also understand that the accessories are one of the most profitable business aspects for electronic companies like Sony and Dell.

Dell wants to be the leader and differentiator? Well...

>> How about a smart universal power adaptor for all DELL products that intelligently recognizes the product and supplies the appropriate power.
One power supply and connector for all products!!!

I know technically it is possible – I did design this and did work on the patent application but, did not file because I got focused on some other activities. I am pretty sure there are enough smart engineers at Dell to design this. If you want a head start contact me for details. 9 Comments »

External wifi antenna connector

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by cromo 02/17/07

I came into this idea some time ago. The idea is simple - to put an external wifi connector on the back of the laptop and a button to switch between internal and external antennas. There are loads of different solutions for laptop users that need better signal reception for their wifi cards, most of them simply increase transmitting power (thus exposing us, the users to higher radiation) while all the problems could be easly solved by adding external connector and some some cheap and small external antenna. It would be nice to see such connector on the replicator port, too. Considering the forthcomming WiMax that will be mostly used by ISPs to provide internet connection I am sure such external antenna connector is even a must for the laptops that will come with integrated WiMax card. 6 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Product enhancement for Dell power adapter

Laptop Power submitted by gbrugman 02/21/07

For your information: daily winding and unwinding the notebook connecting cord, will eventually cause the cable shield and isolation to tear down, just outside the housing. It happened to many Dell notebook cords at work, causing the power flow to stop or, even worse, to short-circuit.

The cord at the other end of the AC wall mount doesn't have this problem because this cord already points at the right angle. So as to avoid said problem in the future, both cords should leave the housing in the proper winding-angle: problem solved.

I hope to have been of help, because I think it's a shame that a minor cord problem makes it this risky to work with an otherwise good product. It seems easy enough to remedy. :-) 39 Comments »

Bring back laptop serial ports

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thirty2bit 02/24/07

Dell dropped serial ports from laptops in all but the higher Latitude series. Bring them back! They're useful for Engineers, HAM radio, electronics hobbyists, programming serial devices that are still pervasive.

Instead, drop the parallel port. While useful for hobbyists, it doesn't have as broad a range of applications as the serial port. And who uses parallel printers these days with a laptop? 5 Comments »

Serial and parallel port on notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by mish666uk 09/03/07

Reintroduce serial ports and parallel ports on notebooks. As developers we deal with many hardware items that require serial or parallel communication, and it would be great to have these on notebooks once again. I hear so many people bemoan the fact they don't have them any more! 9 Comments »
