dedicated hi power graphics in small form factor

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays submitted by jtanwanteng 02/28/07

On top of all the posts telling you to update design, please consider offering a new niche of notebook computers: ultraportable gaming. Many people are flocking to ASUS and the Sony SZ series for their needs because they include semi powerful graphics chips in a small, sleek and sturdy form factor. Your XPS 12" line is too thick and ugly to be a contender here, and there is an obvious gap in the 13,14 and 15 inch models. Look towards the panasonic notebooks for lightness inspiration, obviously apple for design, and asus and sony for cramming in graphics. Obviously heat and power is an issue here, but you can definitely figure out how to do it, i believe in you guys. email me if you need a few ideas

Obviously this would be a premium XPS product, but it would at least show off innovation and fill a niche for travelers that still like to game while in hotels where they can plug in and play games after watching a DVD or Hi def movie on the plane. Then shut it all down and crunch excel sheets at client locations during the day

Haven't you listened to gizmodo and engadget making fun of underpowered integrated graphics? the customer is always right - and you ARE targeting the consumer now correct?

Goals: all should be STURDY and ATTRACTIVE, battery life should be good in work environments and playing movies

1. Crysis at screen resolution at medium settings, 13", 4lbs, 1" thin

2. Crysis at screen resolution medium to high settings , 14", 4.5lbs, 1" thin

3. Crysis at screen resolution medium to high settings, 15" 5lbs, 1" thin

FYI the geforce go7900gs only has slightly more tdp than current midrange laptop graphics chips like the x1600/1700 and 7600/7700 1 Comment »

We all hope no less than a NEW LAPTOP DESIGN when SantaRosa arrives !!!

Laptops submitted by henca0315 02/19/07

IT'S TIME TO DELL FOR REFRESHING THEIR PCs DESIGNS !!!

We hope it, we deserve it!

SantaRosa platform (Centrino Pro) arrives on May, MacOSX Leopard on April.

So, by May, both Apple and Dell will have:

**** SantaRosa + New OS in their notebooks ****.

I hope Dell to launch new laptop designs on May when SantaRosa arrives, otherwise, I'll get a Mac (maybe other customers will do it, too)

I'm kind of sure Apple will have a new laptop by then. I have heard about LED-backlight displays and a 15.4" macbook. Anyway, Leopard will worth the switch by itself.

Keep in mind having Vista on a mac is easier than having OSX on a PC (unless you ensure to pick all compatible hardware to OSX) 2 Comments »

Carbon Fiber, Magnesium Alloy, Titanium and other 'Exotic' materials

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by thorin_2 02/21/07

After literally MONTHS of research I finally settled on an IBM Thinkpad notepbook, not in small part due to the "coolness" or hip factor of having a laptop that partially consisted of carbon fiber casing (to reduce weight), a magnesium alloy "roll cage" (along with the accelerometer) to protect my data in case of a fall/drop, and even the optional titanium cover. These sorts of things set IBM apart from the crowd and eventually won me over.

Now if only I could only get IBM's ThinkVantage design, Apple's MagSafe, a 15" LED LCD display, all for Dell's low price point... 1 Comment »

Offer a 13" laptop

Laptops submitted by thany 02/21/07

Offer a 13" laptop that is very power-efficient, so offer it with a ULV processor and with a LED-backlight. Just like the Asus U1F (but without the leather). And don't forget to make it lightweight.

Right now there's a 12" laptp which is just too small, and a 14" laptop which doesn't have the low-power components and might be just too large. 2 Comments »

LED backlight TFT-Displays (for laptops)

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by svenmeyer 02/20/07

If you use your laptop for a while, you will notice already after a few months that the brightness of the display decreases, the color changes, what was white a the beginning starts to look more blueish or greenish ... all this could be avoided with LEDs instead of flourescent lamps as backlight. Also the save power and distribute the light more evenly across the screen.
I'm not buying a new laptop until it has LED backlight (and HMDI/DVI ports). I'm not willing to spend another $2000-3000 only to see my display fade away after a few months ... 3 Comments »

low power laptop

submitted by chris55 02/22/07

Dell laptops are power hungry. Most consume 40-60W and this weakness is demonstrated by the fact that Dell make very few claims about battery life of their notebooks/laptops. Do any of them last much more than 2-2.5 hours?

How about a laptop with at least 5 hours battery life? Speed is not the first demand for everyone. For many portability is more important. 1 Comment »

Battery charger

Laptop Power submitted by tfehe4 02/20/07

Why is the battery charger still a big, ugly piece of 1990s electronics? Take a look at Apple and just see how elegant and thoughtful they designed their notebook charger. Comment »

Dell / Target for retail

Sales Strategies submitted by dvd 02/23/07

If you're going to hook up w/a retail partner, Target would be the best choice - they don't have computers (yet), as WalMart does, and are growing fast, yet still keeping true to their vision. Comment »

threaded ideastorm

IdeaStorm submitted by rpurcell 02/19/07

I think you will get better interaction on this site if you somehow thread or group your ideas (like the categories already set up) and then moderate and "seed" them with questions to get people focused on the topics that you are most interested in receiving feedback on.

This might just happen organically, but it'll happen faster if you structure it yourself... 4 Comments »

Better Graphics cards on 14" and 15" laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by nyuen1976 02/21/07

ATI x1400 is the best graphics card on the 6400 - the Geforce 7300 isn't that great. Maybe add a few better options to capture the budget minded gaming community? Comment »

Automatic Battery Conditioning

Laptop Power submitted by tmcqueen 02/23/07

I've seen Battery Conditioners that cycle through draining and recharging the battery several times in order to keep batteries in top shape. It would be nice to have this feature on Dell notebooks, maybe an option to condition the battery while the laptop is on AC power? 1 Comment »

No OS Preloaded and a choice of DELL-certified DVDs for OS preinstall

Operating Systems submitted by yves.demur 02/24/07

The PC must be software bare. The customer will have the choice to buy, from DELL or editors, the DVDs that puts the PC in the equivalent preinstalled state. The installation operations must be done by booting on the choosen DVD and answer a few simple questions.

DELL must work with the editors, MS and others, to allow them to build the DVDs with all the drivers needed by the hardware to work fine. DELL will certify only one version of an OS+editor for each model of PC. The software upgrades are fully under the responsability of the editors. Comment »

Get rid of pestware *cough* demos.

Nothing is more annoying than booting up your brand new "clean" machine to find a dozen plus pieces of trial software. Why not just offer the free and open source alternatives? 1 Comment »

clean software system

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yar 02/20/07

As a tech, I would like to see Dell make an efford to make a Clean Software System, by this I mean only what a customer want on his or her Dell.

Only programs ask for, no trials, no isp's, no extra's promotions, no virus or security systems for less than a full year, let the customer add these on thier own.

Along with a disc for each and every program and operating system.

So much junk is add to the systems that take up space and are never used, or a customer desides he or she want to change from McAfee to Norton's it is a major problem.

If you have to use you system recovery disc or disc's, you reinstall all the trash again.

Most of my friends and customers would pay extra for a system without all the add-ons they don't need or want. If you need to Include software for special hardware, Cd, DVD. please include but no temp software. 2 Comments »

Built-In Webcam and Microphone Option on Inspiron

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by olegturaev 02/20/07

Built-in webcams are available on some XPS models. Why not on Inspiron? Right now, it's the reason I'm leaning toward HP rather than Dell.

HP offers a cheap built-in webcam and microphone option on almost all of their laptops. Since price on Dell and HP laptops is almost the same, small differences like that become important.

People use laptops more and more for VoIP. In places with internet connections and at homes, a laptop can become a free phone through programs like Skype and Google Talk. Dell should not be missing out on this new wave of customers.

I hate all wires, which is why I switched to laptops. Removing the webcam wire would be a big step up for Dell. 9 Comments »

Offer a New Line with upgradability for laptops AKA Video Cards

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by snowbob230 02/18/07

Offer a line that has the option to completely customize your entire laptop, from size, video cards, color, etc. Then along with that give them the option of operating system including Linux or none at all.

Last but most importantly offer upgrades for laptops, mainly video cards. So that a year from now someone can just upgrade there video card instead of buying a whole new laptop.

However, whether you can do that or not give us an option to build our own laptop. With the ability to decide whether we want windows XP, Linux, None at all or Vista 1 Comment »

Don't classify buyer on the web, just show me what you have

Dell Web Site submitted by simplify 02/20/07

When selecting a Dell computer on the web pages, you are forced to state what kind of buyer you are. Does different types of buyers get to see different computers?

I want to see all Dell computers available regardless of me representing myself, a large business or an educational institution. Sometimes I have multiple roles but want to buy the same computer for all roles. Comment »
