Dell provide the option of a TouchPad-less notebook in your notebook product line and provide the nubbin instead

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jorge 06/30/07

Dell provide the option of obtaining a Notebook computer without a trackpad and instead only have the nubbin* (see definition below if unclear).

Here's a pic for reference (the red thing):

You'll still need to have a couple buttons below the space bar but no trackpad! The trackpad is the cause of many peoples carpel tunnel syndrome don't be the computer company to cause its customers to not be able to use a computer due to this. This will also clear up space so peoples wrists can rest more comfortably and also provide more space for your beloved stickers.

* Nubbin: (note there are many words use to name this device if you know what it is don't click below, if you don't well click with caution as most people don't use the same vocabulary as you might but it is what its called)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nubbin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trackpoint
http://foldoc.org/?nipple
http://catb.org/esr/jargon/html/N/nipple-mouse.html
http://xkcd.com/c243.html< This idea is or not have a trackpad at all and have only a nubbin pointer instead, not to have a nubbin and a trackpad, just want to be clear as most people tend not to read through, so hopefully this will clear it up for Joe/Jane one thought at a time.

Nipple on desktop keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by badblood 09/20/07

Here I am typing away on my desktop and getting very tired of moving my hand from the keyboard to the mouse, from the mouse to the keyboard, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah.

It would be nice if you could add a nipple or track point thingy to desktop keyboards. Much more convenient....

Thanks 9 Comments »

D-Bay on inspiron lineup and trackpoint on inspiron lineup

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07

A modular bay is a very handy idea, I think dell should have it on all their laptop lines, like in times past, I like the idea of having the ability to have an extra battery or hard drive in my computer if i need it and can switch out my dvd burner.

I also think the trackpoint should make a return as well to the inspiron lineup, its a handy pointing device that doenst wear your fingers out as much as the touch pad tends to do. 4 Comments »

Bring the Laptop Nipple Back

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by flooted 03/28/07

Remember the laptop cursor Nipple, replaced by the touch-pad. Well bring back the nipple, it's easier to use when you know how. Some Lenovo's have the nipple and the touch-pad. That's a good solution.

Actually I'm not even sure if Dell ever had Nipples..?

Well if they didn't, they should. 5 Comments »

Trackpoint mouse doohickey

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by thorin_2 02/21/07

Another reason why I ended up purching a Thinkpad. I know the Dell Latitude notebook has one, but why not in there consumer or Inspirion series? These things are MUCH easier to use for navigating over the standard trackpad. 1 Comment »

Track Pointer

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bayusb Feb 29

I just bought a XPS 1330. I love it so far, but hate the regular touchpad pointer (I have really only had Thinkpads to this point). I think there should be more alternatives to the touchpad. I have been told the touchpad is more natural, but I seem to prefer the little red trackpointer (it gives me more control). Is there some sort of patent issue of who owns the various tracking approaches? 6 Comments »

All Dell Laptops shoud have the TrackPoint

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by hadees 02/24/07

I really love the Trackpoint but not all your laptops have it. The touchpad is a pain to use while a Trackpoint will allow me to keep my fingers on the keyboard while also using the mouse. 6 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Use magsafe power connectors

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Linux promotion

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by alfadaemon 06/19/07

I don't know about you, but I noticed the label that you get when entering the only part of Dell site that you get for sure to see Ubuntu Linux.

The label that you first see on the site (The one with BIGGER LETTERS). I don't know about you but when someone ask me where they can find the "famous" Ubuntu-Dell computer I redirect them to www.dell.com/open, and what do you get in there? I frightening: "Not sure Open Source is for You?" What's this kind of marketing? You tell someone, hey there is Dell selling Linux computers but if you not sure if Linux is for you, come get a Windows PC!!!!

I believe that Linux is not only for the "Already an Open Source fan", Ubuntu, and Linux, is ready for much more of that. Why don't change that with something that motivate people to search and get involved in the Linux world?

I know that Dell is getting more $$$ for the Windows' computers, but I don't think this is the right way to promote a "new" product. Comment »

Linux Pre-Installed on Business Laptops

Linux submitted by dbyte32 07/02/07

Dell should offer Linux pre-installed on business laptops, not just home laptops.
Dell currently offers Red Hat Enterprise on the Dimension N Series, Optiplex N Series and Dell Precision Workstations for businesses. What's the problem with offering Red Hat Enterprise on the Inspiron, Latitude, Precision Mobile and XPS notebooks? Dell currently has the expertise in house for Red Hat Enterprise since they have been selling it for years. Support can be purchased directly from Red Hat with dell supporting hardware issues.

At the least allow customers to buy the business laptops without windows, so then they have the option of purchasing a copy of Red Hat Enterprise from Red Hat directly and installing it themselves. 6 Comments »

Linux - Distribute Live Disks!!

Linux submitted by cosh 04/01/07

Earlier, I was trying to join the general support for Dell to do more computers with Linux pre-installed. But, reading the US Deparment of Justice Findings of Fact in the old Microsoft anti-trust case, I realised what a shockingly tight grip Microsoft have on OEM retailers. It's a long, confusing and scary read, but the important notion is this:

The more computers Dell (or any other OEM retailer) sell with Linux or without an OS, or the more they advertise Linux on their site, and the more they INCLUDE ANY OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE ON THEIR MACHINES WHICH COULD AT ANY LEVEL COMPETE WITH SOFTWARE FROM MICROSOFT, the higher price Microsoft can charge Dell for all versions of Windows that they want to sell. Thus, the cost of Windows PC's might go up for Dell.

How about, Dell do something different here. Just give away the live disks for a few different distros free with their computers. That way, you don't get into trouble with Microsoft at all. If Microsoft try to change the price they sell Windows at to Dell for just for bundling a simple free complimentary gift with their computers, it would be so blatantly illegal and anti-competitive and just what the Department of Justice is looking for - they would be on them in minutes. Maybe I'm being naîve but really I don't see how Microsoft could possibly retaliate...

<u>Advantages of using Live Disks:</u>

- It lets people still try Linux even if they wouldn't go for the dual-boot option. This method will give so much publicity to Linux - like nothing else ever could.

- It makes an amazing tool for support. If Windows goes wrong, the support personnel can ask if the user has their Linux disks available and use one of those to boot up and fix the problem. It also lets you test if a problem is with the hardware or with Windows or an application.

- You don't have to install it. Just put in the DVD (or CD) and restart the computer. Instant and workable Linux with no-risk. It doesn't attempt to write to the hard drive and cannot damage anything. Run OpenOffice, Mozilla Firefox, etc., straight from the DVD.

- You can include a few different distros on different disks, instead of just one.

- There's no danger from not knowing how to use Linux, because Windows is still the main OS. You just have some free bonus software with your PC is all.

- If you hate Linux, break the disks as some kind of ritual of it. Or whatever. It's your choice.

- It's extremely quick and easy for Dell to start with, because not everything has to work right with regards to driver issues. The disks are extremely good at auto-detecting hardware on the fly, but if, for example, there's no sound support running off the live disk, it doesn't matter, because it's not the main OS. Including a couple of live disks is quick and cheap and they tend to be packed with software, so it lets everyone get a hellova lot more for their money when they buy a Dell.

- It can also hugely boost popularity for having Linux installed on future computers. Dell can use this as an advert for dedicated Linux machines. And then lots more major retailers, like Dell, will see the opportunity. This could be the start of a real change and new flexibility in the market.

Want to know more about the inflatable penguin above? They were giving out demo disks of Linux. Read the short story here and see the photos here. The funniest bit from it is this:

Our presence also attracted one of the Ice House employees. He crossed the street, fully clad in Windows Vista sweater and hat, and approached me. "Hey, are you guys promoting Linux?" he asked. I nodded, smiling. "Can I get a CD? I'm curious, I'd like to try it," he continued. Trying not to laugh at the irony of it all, I gladly handed him a CD. He thanked me, and quickly ran back to the Ice House before anyone saw him with the Linux people.

Translation: Lots of people would like to try Linux, even if they wouldn't have it as a main operating system.

Open the window. Linux is ready for the world, and the world is ready for Linux. 9 Comments »

Next step: most systems should have a choice of OS, including Linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 05/24/07

First step: offer Linux on -specific- systems
NEXT step: offer a CHOICE of OS on MOST systems

CHOICE is GOOD! Wouldn't it be SIMPLER FOR DELL to provide the same options for each class of system? So, a drop-down list of OS choices?

ONE web page for EACH model of system. SAME format for EVERY page! 18 Comments »

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

Dell, Linux submitted by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.
