Fix CPU Whine On Intel Systems
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by codemonkeyx

This issue has been ignored by Dell, and other manufactures for far too long. I was hoping the issue had been addressed with the new M1330 laptop I just bought, but it has not.
When the CPU enters low power mode it makes a whining sound all the time. It's quite bad, and has been reported all over the web by thousands of users.
Dell needs to sit down with Intel, and figure out what is going on and stop ignoring the problem.

All this rage about gamig/pc replacement laptops 15" and bigger is just... sick. Laptops are more like desktop replacemnts. This is more personal wish... but maybe more people want to have small compact laptop (so compact like the hp evo 410c)
What I am just looking for is compact laptop with mimalistic desing like evo 410c but more power

Lighten the load and brighten the display.

I have a number of Dell laptops and what made me eventually buy a Macbook Pro was the lightweight and bright display. Of course, I could have never made the switch without Parallels, but after trying a MBP, I now know what's wrong with Dell's.
1. Too heavy. My MBP is light, svelte, and has great ergonomics. Dell needs to really trim the weight and shrink the box.
2. Too many choices and none of them are right. Apple, as an example, gives you far fewer choices and many less configuration options. Time to reduce the clutter and simplify the choices. I recently configured a XPS 1210 and by the time I was done, I couldn't remember all the options and canceled the order.
3. A nice bright, clear display can win the notebook war. I had a ACER 8104 and couldn't use it cause the display was so bad. The D620 and D820 are better, but not by much.
4. If you really want to start selling laptops, come out with a high end, less configurable, business laptop. Haven't you heard, we business people pay a premium for an Apple laptop and we're happy with them. Lenovo has stumbled with their Thinkpad line and I've just about given up on them. This would be an ideal time to come out with a very high end model for the business traveler. I'd order one right now if it was spec'd right and was lightweight with a great display.
I'd really like to see Dell back on top, but with what you offer me, I'd rather see you sell out to Apple. Get a new design team and get in the game! Believe me, there are users out there ready to spend upwards of $ 3K for a great laptop.

Include power cord with Laptop Adapter Purchase
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dlevasseur

If you search and order a Laptop adater it does not come with a power cord to go from th wall to the adapter. The power cord is an additional $19.99 + Shipping.
Backstory:
My boss lost the power cord (Not the adapter, just the powercord) to our laptop in China. I talked with my Dell rep who thought I should order a new adapter. I searched the model number and placed the order.
Received the adapter... Just the adapter, not the cord. Now I have two adapters and no power cords. I call Dell and receive credit for the adapter and am told not to mail it back.
Look through the Mouser catalog and find the correct power cord for the adapter... $3 + $1.50 shipping. I immediately ordered two. Now I have two working adapters.
Looking through the Dell Reviews for Laptop adapters, this seems to be a common problem.
Dell: Add $3 to the price and include the power cord. Less headaches, and less free adapters given away. Given my above story... Thanks for the free adapter!

Bring the Latitude to the Home/Home Office (Latitude equals Dell style and quality as it SHOULD be!)

Compare the touch and feel of a MacBook to that of an Inspiron. It doesn't compare. The Inspiron isn't as stylish, and has a cheap plasticky feel. The MacBooks are solid, sturdy, and, if you have a MacBook PRO, made of metal. For college students such as myself who put our computers through the abuse of daily use, it only gets worse. My Mac colleagues, however, still show off their shiny (literally) only slightly beaten MacBooks.
The Latitude, however, is everything the Inspiron should be in terms of design and style. Don't limit the Latitude to just Business users, get it to your average consumer!
People shouldn't be comparing the look and feel of MacBooks to Inspirons, they should be comparing them to Latitudes!

01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
Software submitted by robinjfisher
02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Okay Dell, of couse you have had many succesions in your past, but: Welcome to the future. Look at the soft-core and hard-core apple fans, what is so catchy about a mac, an ipod? The design and most importantly, the LOGO. And look at Dell, look at the logo, I mean common' Dell just admit it, you logo's ugly. But Apple, a simple, wordless, picture of an apple with a curved bite. An instant classic that we remain through generations. So tell I've been waiting a long time...the logo is the way of success

We all hope no less than a NEW LAPTOP DESIGN when SantaRosa arrives !!!

IT'S TIME TO DELL FOR REFRESHING THEIR PCs DESIGNS !!!
We hope it, we deserve it!
SantaRosa platform (Centrino Pro) arrives on May, MacOSX Leopard on April.
So, by May, both Apple and Dell will have:
**** SantaRosa + New OS in their notebooks ****.
I hope Dell to launch new laptop designs on May when SantaRosa arrives, otherwise, I'll get a Mac (maybe other customers will do it, too)
I'm kind of sure Apple will have a new laptop by then. I have heard about LED-backlight displays and a 15.4" macbook. Anyway, Leopard will worth the switch by itself.
Keep in mind having Vista on a mac is easier than having OSX on a PC (unless you ensure to pick all compatible hardware to OSX)

Notebooks - better quality, better options, better design

I have been in the market for a laptop for almost 6 months now. I have avoided buying one as I havent found one that actually fit my needs perfectly.
14.1" widescreen notebook are arguably the perfect balance between the small, yet mobile, 13.3 or 12.1" screen, and their mid range 15.4". For those of us who want a laptop that is portable yet viewable, 14.1" is the ideal candidate.
Now if we take the 14.1" even further as a multimedia portable machine, it should incluce all the bells and whisles like memory card readers, svideo (d620 doesnt have) and even a webcam. And it should all be packaged in a thin and light casing that is still durable and stylish.
That is my recommendation to dell.

More balanced design
Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mtc

I have been using Dell machines since 1991. The last one I bought was a Dimension 2200 in 2002 (and a 3000cn printer in 2005) What strikes me is that Dell often chooses the cheaper component over the more suitable one. This is especially the case for diskdrives, that deliver insufficient performance in comparison to processor and memory. E.g. my 1998 IBM PC300PL performs far better than tthe Dimension 2200, adding an old hard disk to the Dell machine from my defunct IBM 1996 Thinkpad shows that this disk exceeds the Del drive in performance by far.
Unless Dell will start to use well balanced equipment in their new desktops and servers, I will keep buying HP's or equivalent machines.

Timeless design (think contemporary furniture; e.g. Barcelona chair)
Dell submitted by duntuk
02/18/07
This is what apple has been doing the past couple of years... they're thinking long term...
ask yourself this: what will look good now as well as 50+ years from now...
e.g. the fitted white t-shirt, jeans... the barcelona chair, European or Japan inspired modern/simplistic furniture... clean looking... etc...
these are styles that would be accepted by a vast majority of different tastes.... they don't inspire shock, but rather a zen-like appearance....
It's very easy what apple does with case design, they basically keep it simple and elegant...
anyhow... as an example of what not to do, is create cases like Alienware does, or anything close to that... those styles are very dramatic... and anything that stands out that much is going to get 'played' fast...
It's like going out to a party and wearing a really unique dress... even though that dress may be extremely beautiful or ugly or whatever... if it's too dramatic, it will stick in people's heads, and guess what, you'll never be able to wear it again.... cause people be like "didn't i see you in that the other night?!" ... it's like a one hit wonder....
it's basically the same thing as hearing a song that you may REALLY love for a week or two, but then play it out for yourself so bad that you can't stand it anymore....
now... with the timeless design... if you wore a fitted pair of jeans and a simple t-shirt, you could wear that style over and over and no one will ever say "didn't you wear that before?" (think james dean)... same thing with haircuts, etc... the clean/basic ones never go out of style...
just my thoughts...

Dell needs to aggressively move away from being perceived as cheap and boring. Corrall all the confusing sub-brands into a cohesive approach that shows us a new, fresh approach to design. There is no reason on Earth why Dell has to have worse design than SONY or Apple. Indeed with your new hires, this needs to be the target. There needs to be a "Dell look" that is not "gray, dull, box"
Think Target not Wal-Mart. It is now an age of design and Dell should create a moonshot to lead the market. If Mike can put his personal focus on it, I am totally confident it could happen. We are rooting for you!!!!!!

improve notebook design -- keyboard, interfaces and noise
Latitude products submitted by macias
02/17/07
[ Latitude D610 user ]
1) look at the latest apple notebooks -- keys are much more separated, it is brilliant (mine, apple copied it :-D) idea -- the keys can be even smaller, with more space, the whole keyboard takes less space in effect, so... 1.a) you can make smaller notebook 1.b) you can put pgdn/up, home, end in vertical column at the right
2) make fn key not hardwired -- for example fn+0 is "/", good but it can be better -- I would like to assign various symbols to fn+any key -- T, V, B, any key. Notebooks suffer from keyboard layout so at least make it better at one point
3) audio controls -- those keys should be really hardware-audio buttons, I mean, I press "mute" and no matter what the system says, there is no audio -- in other words, they should be 100% operating system independent
4) could it be possible to add mouse "wheel" -- maybe dual, looking at my D610 at the top of "esc" and "pgup" key -- it would make navigating much easier. But I would opt not for standard tiny mouse wheel, but a bit wider, so you can rest your finger on it (1cm?)
5) remove all old, not used interfaces -- who really needs RS232, gosh. And if anyone really wants it, it is more efficient to plug usb connector. Better provide modern audio and video output (dvi) and drop all those centronics, modems, rs232, etc.
6) D610 nightmare -- NOISE. I have no idea, make the notebook aluminium, put vents on the sides (not below), cool down the memory (boy, it's getting hot), use ULV processors, but cool it! And keep it quiet.
My preferences are: light (w/o CD), quiet, cool notebook, ~10" _high-res_ (1400x1200) screen but not widescreen -- which when I am at home I could connect to external monitor.
