TheOpenCD.org should be an option for any Dell OS, regardless if Windows or Ubuntu

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 05/26/07

Dell should offer the TheOpenCD.org CD as an option for customers to select when configuring their purchase. Again, irrelevant of Windows or Ubuntu. TheOpenCD offers the following Software Suites for Free and without the usual Bloatware that irritates customers:

Design - Blender, GNU Image Manipulation Program, Inkscape, NVU, Scribus, Tux Paint.

Games - Battle for Wesnoth, Enigma, Neverball, Sokoban YASC.

Internet - Azureus, FileZilla, Firefox, Gaim, HTTrack, RSSOwl, Thunderbird, TightVNC, WinSCP.

Multimedia - Audacity, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers, Stellarium.

Productivity - MoinMoin, OpenOffice.org, PDFCreator, Notepad2.

Utilities - 7-zip, Abakt, Clamwin, GTK+, HealthMonitor, Workrave.

Due to an unpredictable change I alter my idea to !

TheOpenDisc.com CD should be given out if TheOpenCD.org is not complete enough for you! Its pretty much the same thing, opensource software for the price of Free yet many more apps! So a win win for all! Yeay!

Dell buy/invest/advertise in the Dallas Mavericks and/or the San Antonio Spurs

Advertising and Marketing submitted by jorge 06/17/07

Dell you need to get your name up in the NBA boards and join the high rollers in advertising in sporting events that are Team oriented to use them for team building strategies for the company. This improves company moral and adds a company outing to raise moral.

My pork barrel is to move the money from auto racing to non-energy wasting sports.

This can lead to a Dell dept. tournament and increase moral even more! Not to mention increase the health of your employees and increased attendance at work.

Dell donate $10-$20 of each Ubuntu computer sale to a worthy cause

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by mistern 06/13/07

Dell should donate US$10-20 of each Ubuntu computer sold to a (Linux-related) worthy cause. Maybe less for emerging and developing countries where price levels are not as high as in the USA.

This would have at least the following advantages:

  1. It's a worthy cause after all!
  2. It makes up a great response to those people who claim the Ubuntu computers were more expensive than their Windows equivalents.
  3. It's probably quite good advertising for the Ubuntu computers.

I would gladly donate such an amount (to a worthy cause) if I were to buy a Dell Ubuntu computer! Maybe to the Ubuntu foundation?

Otherwise, for a list of top-rated non-software charities, see here. But, as pointed out by jmxz, a Linux-related donation would make much more sense.

Another interesting group of people might be the organisation behind Wikipedia. (Somehow related to free software, one might say.)

Jorge suggested to "develop bloatware" (for Ubuntu) with the money. [Debatable whether this is a worthy cause.]

Please suggest worthy causes in the comments, so I can list them here. 23 Comments »

Electronic paper displays

Monitors and Displays submitted by endolith 06/10/07

Invest in companies designing smartpaper displays, so that they can develop really high-quality and fast color versions like LCDs, and then use them in laptops, tablets, and standalone displays.

It's energy efficient (longer battery life), lightweight, and doesn't strain the eyes as much as an LCD; like staring into a light bulb all day. 5 Comments »

| L | C | R |

__________

L -- Left screen which is a flip model to close

R - Right screen which is a flip model to close

C - Center screen attached to Laptop

Left and Right screen will overlay on Center screen when closed. 9 Comments »

Provide OPEN Linux drivers for all DELL products!

Linux submitted by lucianotolfo 05/27/07 **REVIEWED**

I think it's important for DELL to provide OPEN and FREE Linux drivers for all their products (notboocks, desktops, printers, etc.) to mark the way for other manufacturers, to develop linux drivers too (or they can work together with the linux community to do that)

Also the Linux users can get an easy way to configure their DELL products on Linux. Because linux users also take into account which hardware will be compatible on their Linux systems
We have open Linux drivers on our server products today and are driving our desktop and notebook vendors to do the same.

See only Linux compatible components when building your own system

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by frozenfire 05/03/07

It would be nice when building you own system on the Dell site, you can tick a box and then it doesn't show the components that aren't Linux compatible. 3 Comments »

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Dell should make computer that actually look cool

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by couger 06/18/07

Why is it that no big computer company's e.g Dell ever make their computers look really cool. You always see these computer on the net that have neon fans and see-thru side panels and yet no one in Dell can seem to design one. If Dell made a laptop with like water or gel or something cool in the top then of course i would buy it. If they made a desktop with neon lights and cool colors and other fancy things then of course it would sell. Comment »

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.

Show all software licenses that apply to the customer before he/she has bought the product

Software submitted by mistern 06/10/07

Software has become a central part of modern computing. Being immaterial property, it usually comes with very varying licenses - not without consequences to the customer. I believe that this is vital information that the potential buyer should be able to see before he/she has bought the machine and with the machine, the software included.

I'm sure the buyer can send back the machine for a refund if he/she doesn't think he can live with the rights assigned to him/her by the software maker, but I think this is hassle that can be avoided.

It's a right to be informed. 7 Comments »

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vistaâ„¢..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

IdeaStorm submitted by rthess 06/13/07

From the main Dell site, I could not find idea storm. I had to do a few Google searches just to get here. If I hadn't heard such a request forum existed through other means (not Dell), I'd have never known or found it! 2 Comments »

Next step: most systems should have a choice of OS, including Linux

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 05/24/07

First step: offer Linux on -specific- systems
NEXT step: offer a CHOICE of OS on MOST systems

CHOICE is GOOD! Wouldn't it be SIMPLER FOR DELL to provide the same options for each class of system? So, a drop-down list of OS choices?

ONE web page for EACH model of system. SAME format for EVERY page! 18 Comments »

JUST SAY NO TO VISTA BASIC.

Operating Systems submitted by ptcase 06/13/07

DELL,
Please don't sell Vista Basic as the base OS if you recommend a better version of Vista. Customers don't want to be frustrated by having a BASIC experience just after they just spent $$$$ on your products. Customers are smarter than you think. cross them once, they will be very leary of repeat business. Cross them twice, yo can kiss future customer loyalty out the window. 2 Comments »
