Offer the 8800M in Latitude
Dell, Latitude products submitted by zanlok
Jan 29
The graphics cards in these latitudes are amazingly outdated. I personally want the option of non-Quadro card in my Latitude. The 3dMark06 performance of the 8800M is amazing compared to those lame Quadro NVS 135M / 140M cards. If it doesn't conveniently port, then do a motherboard/cooling redesign for the Latitude D640. But, offer it !

Clevo has a Q6700 notebook, why can't Dell?
Dell, Gaming, XPS products submitted by zanlok

This Sager notebook is a prime example. I'd love to see an XPS 1735 variant in this vein. Just make sure it supports 8800M SLi with WSXGA+ and that can dock!
Yes, yes, it would be even heavier and even hotter.. I know. It is all wondefully impractical, but we gamers expect such. These are NOT "lap"tops, but they are great portable workstations. The point is people are buying those systems, and for big bucks. There is obviously a market for it. Let's see Dell get into this market!

IdeaStorm home: display NEW ideas, not 'popluar' ideas
IdeaStorm submitted by zanlok
Jan 30
The 'popluar' ideas get lots of votes because they have lots of exposure. So, ideas on the popular ideas page just get more popular. As a result, everything else tends to get sidelined. The recent and category links are nice, but those lists are still ordered by posting date.
Blockbuster.com accounts implement the mechanism I suggest: they "recommend" movies to you that you haven't rated. Once you've watched a movie and rated it, that movie isn't in the 'recommended' listing anymore. IdeaStorm should do this - and display a list of ideas on which you have not yet voted. This would be a great way to allow people to easily vote on as many of our different ideas as possible. Category links should do this, too.
Other than being a forum to post your ideas... IdeaStorm should also be about getting as many votes as possible on our ideas.

$499 ecomomy systems with AMD & ATI + Ubuntu
Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by zanlok
Jan 31
When I search Dell.com for "AMD Ubuntu", there are 0 results.
How about a new line of offerings specifically targeted at budget buyers? I mean desktops and laptops. Something like Vostro, but not so boring / boxy. Allow color customization on laptops and LED customization for desktops. And don't skimp on hardware. Just use affordable components from the ground up. Allow options for blu-ray, webcams, fingerprint readers, etc.
Dodge the monopolies and pass along the savings!

Expandable battery - where you can add on extra cells
submitted by laxboy10
Feb 5
Create a battery that is a 6 cell, but you can make it a 9 cell, all you need to do is add an attachment to it. This way the laptop battery will be small and light if you want to carry it around in your house but it will have a long battery life if you add the extra cells so then you can travel with it. This will be revolutionary and will be the best of both worlds, a powerful and small battery.

Textbox
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Healthcare submitted by ideaman
02/28/07
I was visiting my Father the other day and his Hearing Aids just do not do a very good Job. But My Father can ready very well and speaks perfectly fine. Yet I find myself having trouble communicating. My idea is to take the Text Capabilities of the phone minimize it to local RFI and include a remote keypad for others to commnicate to the elderly. Local RFI would keep the cost down compared to using normal Phone Texting Cell lines. Something that hangs around the neck and the elderly can simply look down to read. Flashing LED to let them know they have a message? 2nd generation could include voice recognition that work with Hearing Aids. maybe an option that also included the mobel phone service as well. This would only work for those who can read & speak but not hear very well. other models could follow depending on the elderly's capabilities depending on hearing, sight and speach.

PC with healthcare related products and services
Healthcare, Service and Support submitted by dr.shanghai

Thinking outside the box... let's have creative ideas around healthcare related products and services by maximizing the use of PC and wireless technology to different age groups etc.
For example: partner with healthcare providers to monitor patients such as diabetes and record blood sugar daily or weekly and send out data via wireless to the doctors. We can provide healthcare services to our customers with different packages. Innovation is the key for this idea to be implemented.

Medical History USB Drive (or whatever)
Healthcare submitted by chrisrose.chrisrose
03/03/07
Boy, whatever happened to the idea of having a smartcard or flashcard (something akin to an SD) or a USB drive on which your entire history of medical records and charts are kept?
I've lived in 12 addresses in 16 years, and every time I move, I say goodbye to a doctor and all the specialists who've consulted. Getting those guys to share records with my new doctor is like pulling teeth. I just want something that a patient could ask doctors to copy their own medical records onto, and reasonably portable, and that is widespread and widely recognized -maybe it could have a big red cross on it, or one of those stick-with-a-snake dealios (that is, Rod of Asclepius) on it.
This is not like a photon torpedo or a teleporter, this is technology that is available now. What's needed is some big market player on the technology side with some leverage to promote and popularize it - because the medical community is too disjoint to quickly come to consensus about issues related to technology. Make it something that is associated with Dell and has an altruistic spin - "Look what Dell is doing for the health of your family. Dell cares (tm)". But make it something that will still be readable over the course of a human lifetime (not, say, like an 8" floppy) and give it reasonable encryption. Why should I have to rely on some dime-store jewelry to tell ER workers that I am allergic to penicillin?

Just in time healthcare education
Healthcare submitted by louise

I am trying to impart 25 years worth of nursing to a diverse group of nurses in a rural acute care facility. Some have no internet access at home and are not familiar with the e-mail that is available to them through the facility. Others grew up with technology. As a group there is a varying degree of healthcare knowledge performance gaps. Finding ways to impart the background knowledge that I have is a challenge in that I can not provide real-time training to everyone when a situation becomes a teachable moment or when an MD is explaining a key piece of info that helps the nurses assimilate a bit more. I would like to partner with Dell and Google (I already sent them my idea) to use laptop with video/audio file capbilities, projector and other available technologies that would enable me to capture those teachable moments, file them and make them available for all staff to use. Learning on the job in a health care environment occurs in a both synchronous and asynchronous manner. I think I can prove, with your and Google's help, that RNs can assimilate and synthesize knowledge better by "just-in-time" or real-time learning. Also, I think that by having tutorials, inservices, and posting staff meeting notes in a way that viewing can be synchronous or asynchronous, we can accomplish what we need to in a more efficient manner. I would enjoy the challenge that this opportunity presents and believe that this can translate into decreased business costs related to developing proficient nurses within a healthcare organization. Your time and energy on my behalf is appreciated. Thank you. Louise C. Amberger, BSN, MSN

Do a Dell "protecting the environment" ad campaign
Environment submitted by jervis961
07/30/07 **REVIEWED**
Show people what Dell is doing to protect the Environment and improve your company image at the same time. You don't even need to show a product just some moving music and nature scenes end it with the Dell logo and a subtitle "protect the environment" and maybe a web site address for further info.
Even people who don't care about the environment will love the scenery and music. Just no Devo or anything, maybe Enya or something.

Offer World Community Grid Agent Pre-Installed
Environment, Software submitted by purereason
08/02/07
World Community Grid is a public computing project that benefits humanity. When the Grid Agent is installed the software uses your computers idle cycles to compute small pieces of HUGE projects like fighting AIDS or finding a cure for cancer.
For more information, check out their website: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org
Dell should offer an opt-in option somewhere during the system configuration steps when purchasing a computer.
They've already got the "plant a tree for me" option, why not give people the chance to become part of something else that benefits everybody. The only difference is that this costs nothing...

Ship Notebooks in padded laptop bags instead of cardboard boxes
Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by akamat
08/02/07
Every time I buy a new computer, I get a huge quantity of cardboard boxes, cutouts, styrofoam etc. that eventually gets thrown out.
Dell could perhaps design a rugged, well padded carrying case which is good enough to protect notebooks in shipping transit - which of course also means it would excel in daily use for shock protection. The focus would be on utility and durability, rather than having soft leather surfaces that get easily scratched in the mail etc. Of course, this would be considered as 'disposable packaging' so that customers can't demand replacements for any scratches. It would simultaneously eliminate a lot of packaging trash, provide a default laptop bag and have Dell branding that serves as free advertisement for all the people who don't want to buy another bag.
Design guidelines would be as follows:
Able to withstand bumps and shocks similar to current cardboard packaging (or atleast at a level where notebooks can be safely shipped in it).
Production cost close to the current packaging, else make it as low as possible and offer the bag as a paid upgrade option.
2+ internal magazine-sized pockets, one of which contains the manuals and warranty sheets etc. when shipped. The other can be used for a detachable strap as that may break if attached outside in transit.
2+ smaller pockets good for cd cases, which hold the reinstallation and driver cds etc.
Do not compromise utility for aesthetics or weight - if it doesn't do the job well, there will be increased returns due to damage.
If the cost can be low enough and weight is considerable, perhaps incorporate inbuilt wheels.
For desktops/servers, this idea can also be extended to a sort of carry-on case with compartments for a desktop, lcd monitor and associated cables & peripherals - having such packaging would help immensely in moves. The desktop version should certainly have wheels too, besides your customers I imagine that postal delivery people will also start recommending Dell machines :)

Renewable energy
Environment submitted by muthulakshman

Respected Michael, I would like to share an idea of mine which I got from my father. The concept is making use of the waste products like paper, wood , cardboards which are used in packaging to name a few into power by which we can save around approximately 30-60% of the expenses on electricity, wherein we can use this renewable power to run heaters in the room , run our manufacturing units,etc.. and also make use of the waste which get from these waste products into organic manure.Since we are members of the Green environment program ,I would like our company "DELL " to named at the top, since I admire and respect you as my idol.I wanted to share this idea much in advance, for the fear I will be chucked out. I am also very much interested in growing DELL in a big way , so I thought let me put my idea and make my company DELL grow , hoping one day before I go to a long sleep have a cup of coffee siting besides you in person ( 1*1) which is my dream.

Its official: Vista Causes Global Warming

Report: Vista causes global warming

See the second page of this story from Network
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/080907-vista-high-def.html?page=1< it's about how Vista frigs up high-def video and audio content. But this Australian researcher says all the overhead in Vista has a more damaging side effect: “It’s a bit of an extreme claim, but you could say Windows Vista causes global warming, because it’s burning so much power with all this nonsense."
What can I say? Yet another reason to buy Unix Computer. Al Gore is on the case, pushing the federal government to drop Windows Vista in favor of Unix in all government offices and all schools. Gore's theory is that Gates is intentionally drawing extra power and trying to heat up the planet, so he can cash in by investing in carbon offsets. Darn you, Beastmaster!
(Edited due to not reading what I was writing till now :) )
PS: Incase the admins can't decipher, the idea is to remove Vista from their OS offerings or at the very least offer a Unix replacement to avoid selling a Anti-Green OS, Dell did ask us to give them Green Ideas after all. No-OS is the Greenest of them all!

Develop a Dell Green Road Show
Advertising and Marketing, Environment submitted by noidea2big

IBM sent me an invitation to attend their "Think Green with the IBM Energy Efficiency Roadshow". Dell has the most complete field return program in the industry and is continuely working to improve re-use of field return unit, in additional to the technology advances.
There are many behind the scenes "Green" activities, which Dell communicate to customers and assist them in establishing similar programs themselves.
