Bluray drive for the XPS M1330

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by jamesweb Feb 19

There used to be an option for a Bluray drive on the XPS M1330 which has since gone missing. Since the format war's as good as over a Bluray option should be becoming standard on all laptops, but starting with the high-end XPS range. 5 Comments »

Add newer processor for a reasonable price like LENOVO

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by busterlee Feb 20

The following link shows how logically prices and current LENOVO has priced its upgrades. Dell should immediately upgrade to the current processor, remove all the extra overpriced memory on the package deals, and have reasonable pricing for upgrades.

Provide more processor options for linux desktops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by rebresb Feb 13

Only one Linux desktop model is available (Inspiron 530N) and only one processor choice exists for it (dual core 2160). This CPU is a low-to-moderate performance choice; it is near the lowest offering in the Windows line-up. While Linux clearly out-performs Windows on modest hardware, the choice of Linux doesn't merely reflect a cost-savings and performance-optimized decision. Users may want the choice of high-end CPUs for intensive applications with Linux. Windows is not the choice of those who want high-end equipment; it requires high-end equipment to run "well". Linux users seeking peak performance will thus want fast processors. (Note that the most/fastest supercomputers run Linux). Support for such processors / motherboards isn't an issue for Linux, so certification by Dell shouldn't be difficult (??). The profit margin is likely higher on these CPUs (??), so that should be attractive. So why doesn't Dell include fast Intel or AMD offerings such as quad-core, 64 X2, core 2 extreme, etc.? 6 Comments »

Need Gigabit Ethernet in M1530.

XPS products submitted by hoodedthing 12/06/07

What about Gigabit ethernet...? It's really not new technology, and it's pretty dissappointing not to see it in the m1530. It wouldn't be that hard to implement now.. Just start sticking gigabit ethernet ports in the laptops instead of 10/100.

This kind of thing is pretty easy to do, it's not expensive for you guys, and makes a huge difference in transfer of files for wired internet. Put gigabit ethernet in the 1530. 9 Comments »

White LED Screen for XPS M1530

XPS products submitted by realskript Jan 19

I commend Dell for listening to the Public and providing better resolution screens for the marvelous M1530.

But it must be noted, that White LED screen is essential.
Brighter, lighter, and more power efficient, make this a must for the M1530.
You've put it on the M1330 from its release, and it is about time for the M1530 to have the same privilege. 2 Comments »

Higher quality lcd screens for XPS M1530

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by marcusesq Jan 13

My brothers XPS M1530 arrived today fitted with a WSXGA+ screen and its horrible and grainy. I didn't get a chance to see weather its fitted with the Samsung or LG screen.
I don't know weather this is a quality control issue or just penny pinching by using cheap screens but until its fixed there is no NO WAY I'll be placing an order.
How anyone could design a laptop this good only to ruin the whole deal by fitting nasty screens is beyond me.
It seems this is not an isolated case either.

To see the extent of the problem look

http://www.notebookreview.com. ( search for "grainy screen"

http://www.google.com ( search for "dell laptop grainy screen" ) 23 Comments »

Make Intel Virtualization Technology (VT) enabled by default or allow user to enable

Linux, XPS products submitted by shinypup Jan 23

So I get my new M1530 and setup VMWare Workstation 6.0.2. When I try to install Windows (I use Linux) VMWare reports VT is disabled and I should enable it in the BIOS. Low and behold the BIOS lacks the option to enable VT (in the M1530 model specifically, some people report other models do allow you to enable it).

Please this is an important feature, please ship notebooks with VT enabled by default, or user enable-able. 16 Comments »

XPS M1530 Resolution ??

XPS products, Laptops submitted by avnanda 11/27/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

SCREEN RESOLUTIONS for XPS Laptop Line

Why on God's green earth would Dell throw in such a cheapy LCD screen into the XPS 1530 ? I've been waiting for this laptop religously since it was 'announced', in the hope of a 1680x1050 screen, or at LEAST 1440x900. What is this, Dell ? Are you trying to scare away your customers with blocky icons and low resolutions ?

Ok, on a less rampaging note ..

Is there any possibility this might change in the future ? Would i be foolish to order immediately, only to see a couple of LCD options pop up over the next few days ?

We now offer 1440 x 900 and 1680 x 1050 panels as an option. Take a look at the Direct2Dell blog post on the idea.

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

Dell, Linux submitted by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.

Make TV Tuner Optional in all Computers

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by badblood 05/10/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Can't see why not...

But make it HDTV (backward compatible with analogue)!

Check out the D2D post on the new All-in-One. Also, cable card tuners are now available on the XPS 420 systems.

Promote gives points; Demote takes them away.

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 05/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Votes make the points for ideas go up and down, but positive or negative votes make a users points always go up. For user points positive vote makes the points go up and negative vote make the points go down. That should equalize things.....

User points no longer go up when people demote their ideas. The reason it's only partially implemented is that we do not have demotes taking users' points away - there's still a debate on whether or not to do that.

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Same discounts available on Ubuntu and Windows

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jonsmirl 06/12/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I'm ordering a Vista XPS 410 right now. I wanted a Ubuntu one but I'm going to throw away yet another copy of Windows. The Vista XPS 410 has $200 off today and free ship for a total of $869. The identical Ubuntu machine is $1019 plus $29.99 shipping. So today Ubuntu costs $170 more than Windows instead of $50 less. Why can't I have the same discounts on the Ubuntu machine? 50 Comments »

Dell change your CD/DVD's to SATA for cable reduction allowing better cooling.

Desktops, Servers and Storage submitted by jorge 06/19/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell change CD/DVD's on your Desktop and Server models (All) to SATA. Using SATA cables reduces any ventilation restrictions which can occur with IDE ribbon cables. SATA also reduces configuration issues for new computer users, reducing support calls.

Offer Ubuntu on the XPS M1330 laptop

Linux, XPS products, Laptops submitted by technikal 06/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the coolest OS on your coolest laptop. I'd be great to buy such a cool laptop knowing ubuntu would work flawlessly on it. Maybe even add Beryl into the default install so that the graphics on the screen were as nice to look at as the laptop itself. I'd even take a dual-boot with Vista - just something to assure me that on the system is Linux ready.

Easier Driver Selection

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by steve.au 07/04/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Not sure about you but whenever I try to download drivers for my D600, I find it tricky choosing the correct driver.

I'd like a couple of things in order of my perception of ease of exectution;
1) Name the drivers in the support downloads section the same as how it appears in Device Manager
2) Have the service tag or serial number perform a lookup to eliminate all drivers for components not in the machine
3) Have a utility to alert me to updated drivers for one of the components. (Yes I've heard of Windows Update but it doesn't work for all components).

Our newly designed support site enables search by service tag/serial numbers. You can also register for an email alert for updated drivers.

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Every printer should duplex! (two sided printing)

Environment, Printers and Ink submitted by one4spl 07/02/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

As an environmentally aware company that makes long shelf-life products (not food or toys) you should be aware that the biggest environmental impact your products have are the results of their use, not their manufacture.

Towards this end all your printers should duplex as standard, and if taken to the extreme the drivers should be set to duplex by default.

They should also go into a very low power state shortly after going idle.

Cheers,

Luke

We offer this capability in some printer products. We constantly seek improvements printers. Thanks for your great suggestions.
