It's time for you to start making sure Microsoft lets you ship WinXP-SP3 pre-installed on Dells.
I believe Microsoft's current thinking is that they won't let you and want you to force Vista on your customers instead.
Why might one want XP-SP3? Well - XP-SP2 leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to security (even according to Microsoft's Vista PR); and Vista leaves a lot to be desired in general. XP-SP3 might be the most viable windows OS for businesses.

Hi,
I would be interested in buying a 4:3-screened laptop. The D530 is one of the only options left on the market with a non-wide screen, and I know it would suit my needs. BUT, there is still no Penryn Processor on these, and that's a BIG obstacle...
I would definitely get one if I could get it with a T8100 processor...
Most of your laptops now have the Penryn option, why not the D530?

And before voting this down, read about IBM's fascinating pilot program for using Macs internally and the advantages they're finding.
IBM’s Research Information Services launched an internal pilot program designed to study the possibility of moving significant numbers of employees to the Mac platform. The study has already found an enthusiastic response from participants and is helping to drive Mac support for IBM’s business applications. ... IBM is actively working to move away from its dependence upon Microsoft Windows and toward a heterogeneous cross-platform future.
The pilot program document outlined a series of reasons for evaluating MacBook Pro laptops as a replacement for the Windows-based ThinkPads currently in use inside the company:

Lower Prices of Batteries, especially Replacements

I realize there is a temporary battery shortage that is driving up prices and also the high cost associated with getting bad batteries that have to be recalled.
However, I know that there are many Li-Ion battery suppliers in China that are currently not qualified as Dell Suppliers and will need a certain amount of work to come up to your quality specs.
Why not begin a program to upgrade their capabilities leading to a more diversified source of batteries, and hopefully, lower prices?
In the mean time, I understand that there are shortages, but it is unconsciousable to raise your prices for replacement batteries to $300 for a 9 cell battery.
That is the level of robbery associated with Sony.
If there is a shortage, hold prices stable but impose rationing instead.

No glaring screens for Laptops

The recent trend to very bright, but highly glaring screens is really bad ergonomically. It might be fine if all you are doing is watch a video, but for serious work, 8 - 12 h a day it is really bad for your eyes.
Get back to basic ergonomics! Please. Or at the very least indicate which screens are anti-glare and which not.

I ordered a Inspiron 1520 and I am fed up with the issues:
crashed hard drive (first 6 days) (I will forgive this one, happens on every manufacturer, its just luck)
vibrating optical drive (shakes entire notebook, abnormal, new one fixed it)
Grainy Screen
Headphone Noise
Casing Defect (bulge in case seam, can see inside notebook)
I think that dell should instute a quality check system on the computers they ship out. Not just tests that can be run on the computer automatically, but a actual person physically inspecting/testing the function of the notebook such as:
- Grainy Screen/backlight bleed (go get a HP laptop and see the difference, go to the store)
- Headphone Noise
- Casing Defects
- Optical Drives that make too much noise
- squeaky keys
- and other issues that cannot be detected by a hardware check running on a CPU
If you do not have the finances to create such a program, then you can add the service as part of the warranty, with a garuntee that the devices that are checked will not have problems on arrival. (So therefore the QC is optional)
This will actually make/save money because people like me won't have to send their laptops back and forth wasting your shipping money/technician fee replacing parts that would be replaced anyway at the quailty check program.
you could also send a special survey to early-adopters to identify the biggest problems in a new computer line and check those at quailty check, certifying those parts free of defects.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?
"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.
I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Higher quality lcd screens for XPS M1530

My brothers XPS M1530 arrived today fitted with a WSXGA+ screen and its horrible and grainy. I didn't get a chance to see weather its fitted with the Samsung or LG screen.
I don't know weather this is a quality control issue or just penny pinching by using cheap screens but until its fixed there is no NO WAY I'll be placing an order.
How anyone could design a laptop this good only to ruin the whole deal by fitting nasty screens is beyond me.
It seems this is not an isolated case either.

More Customization Options for XPS Sysytems

I have been a Dell customer for about eight year's now and have recently visited their website to possibly purchase an XPS 630, me being a game enthusiast and all. It looked like a well put together system and I know Dell build's very good computer's haveing owned a Demension 4600 for seven year's with little to no problems. Upon checking out the customization options for the system I realized they were lacking certain item's that would appeal to gamer's such as a motherboard selection, cpu fans and heatsinks, power supplies, more processor selections like the new q9300 quad, and other name brand memory like Corsair xms2, and Muskin xp2 extrme then just Dominator as the only memory with a heatsink. Also Nvidia has there new 9 series of video cards out on the market, I don't know why Dell wouldn't be offering them instead of the soon to be outdated 8 series.
Another area I fell I should cover before I wrap things up is the case itself. Dont get me wrong its very sharp and sexy I was just hoping for maybe a side window option that maybe wont cost an extra $200 like the 630's big brother the 720, come on Dell thats alittle ridiculous dont you think. Also you should have the option to add extra fans to the case if the buyer deemed necessary.
In conclusion people love having options to choose from and in the case of spending anywhere from $1,500 to alittle over $5,000 for a good gaming computer we want more choices than God himself.

Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude.
