Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Add a New Sales Category with Names not Numbers for Models

Sales Strategies submitted by jorge 05/17/07

Create a new category on the Dell website which references current computer models my a name. For example, "The Home Browser", which could point at a low end Optiplex with a small form factor., "The Gamer", could point to a modestly outfitted XPS system, "The Traveler" to a light and wifi connected laptop. Now these named products would only point to a current model but this would allow those novices looking for a specific category of computers which they cannot determine by a model number like OptiPlex 450, or Latitude D820, etc... Dell can even add a sticker with that name (Dell seems to love stickers) to clearly identify it and make the customer happy that they got "The Killer Game Machine" or "The Wandering Traveler". I can provide more names if needed.

The Marketing guys will flip for this one, they'll be jumping for joy, I can foresee the Advertising campaign to follow it will eclipse the Dell Dude!

PS: Not a joke post, but from what I've read so far on IdeaStorm your customers need it.

Hire this kid to replace the Dell Dude - he already gave you great PR

Advertising and Marketing submitted by jmxz 05/17/07

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/314124_dellfolo03.html

There were surely no parties in the corridors in Redmond when Dell Inc. announced plans this week to offer Ubuntu, an increasingly popular variety of the Linux operating system, as an option on consumer PCs.

But one eighth-grader in Shoreline was pretty happy. Paul Bartell, 13, is looking forward to telling people "Hey, you can go to Dell and you can buy a computer from them" with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed.

And the additional message - Thanks to Ubuntu, Dell's are now easy enough for 13 year olds - can help open new markets for you. 19 Comments »

Base scores (both for Ideas and for Top Users) on the ratio (or percentage) of up votes vs. down votes.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 05/17/07

An idea that gets 100 up votes and 0 down votes (100% of people agree it's a good idea) is probably a better idea than one that gets 1101 up votes an 1000 down votes (about 50% of people like the idea).

The current voting system favors articles that were submitted on very-high-traffic days on IdeaStorm (like when it was linked to by a major news site) - and has little to do with the actual quality of an idea.

If the scores were based on the percentage of up votes rather than the total number, it'd do a better job at measuring the value of the idea itself rather than the popularity of IdeaStorm on that day.

I propose scores get shown as "% of voters voting up" so the best ideas (everyone likes them) would be near 100% and the worst ideas (no one likes them) be near 0%. Every new idea would get it's brief moment on the home page (as only the submitter's vote makes it 100% momentarily) until a few people voted and it'd join the mix of the rest of the ideas. 8 Comments »

Dumb Laptops

Laptops submitted by bvogler 05/17/07

I need nothing on my laptop but the ability to log onto the internet and access my company's Terminal Services. Is there anyway to make a bare bone laptop for this purpose.

Thank you.

List Rejected Ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge 05/17/07

Besides having "Ideas in Action" a category for "Rejected Ideas" so people don't continue to try and add rejected ideas. And the posters of those ideas don't get bent out of shape for losing their idea from the site, they can still see it in the "Rejected Idea" bin, it can hopefully drive them to produce better ideas or push them over the edge (good or bad, hopefully good). I guess keeping the history of the IdeaStorm alive. Just lock the comments or the mocking might get out of hand.

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

webservice to get information about dell computer

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by none01 05/18/07

Hello,

I made an application at the company where I am working, that makes an inventory of all computers in our domain (mostly dell computers) and then the data is displayed on a website.

My idea is, if it could be possible to make a web service or something like that, so that other companies can programmatically integrate information about warranty, original configuration etc. of a workstation/laptop into their helpdesk system, so that they can hold track on when they need to replace an old computer and so on, by only calling the web service with the service tag of the workstation/laptop. 1 Comment »

An EFFECTIVE Dell Presence in the Retail Channel

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by phubert 05/18/07

The announcement that Dell WILL have a retail presence is encouraging, but as I and others have noted it seems to be common that retail offerings, generally, tend to be disappointing.

A friend is in the process of buying a Mac laptop and has been telling me of the services offered by the Apple store as part of the sale (I believe a $99 additional fee for one year of file transfer & tech support).

If you select "Genius" from the below link you will get a slight

http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/< believe LINUX could open the door to just this sort of presence... IF Dell chooses to take advantage of it.

But, should it be available for EVERY platform Dell provides?

Home user issues certainly should be SOLVED: wireless networking, getting the system working with their Internet provider's service, multimedia, etc.

What is an EFFECTIVE retail presence? And, how can Dell provide it without a huge direct investment in 'bricks & mortar'?

If you have ideas, comment here! 9 Comments »

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Ship Linux (or Windows) Live-CDs for Data Recovery & Internet Access

Linux, Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by mistern 05/18/07

Imagine that your hard drive crashes. Or maybe a software problem renders your system unusable?

Wouldn't it be valuable if you had a simple-to-use Live-CD with basic functionality for Internet Access and Data Recovery?

I'd suggest a Linux Live-CD shipped with every Dell computer. A Windows Live-CD would probably be OK, too, but:
  1. There are many existing Linux Live systems which are just stable and ready to use.
  2. There might be licence problems with Windows.

Apply an Energy Star Rating System to your Products

Environment submitted by badblood 05/18/07

Everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment. Choosing an energy efficient appliance is one way to do this while saving money. Apply a star rating for all your products, which rates their energy consumption and ability to be recycled.

www.designstorm.com

IdeaStorm submitted by berman56 05/18/07

Look, it is pretty clear why people are buying those HPs, they simply look better (but not a lot). Dell, you know you have to pay more attention to design, your upcoming ultra-thin LCD is step in the right direction. So I'm sure you are hard at work trying to revamp the "look" of Dell. But why not put the power of your userbase to work. It is time for WWW.DESIGNSTORM.COM. A robust discussion about the future look of Dell. Comment »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

Order Status communication

Service and Support submitted by starseedchipmunk 05/18/07

I have an order that was made on the 5th, expected to ship on the 9th with an estimated arrival on the 14th. It's nice to get that confirmation e-mail of my order and then a follow-up to say it's been confirmed and entered into the system, however..... you have abandoned me now!

Where's my updates? It's the 18th and it hasn't been shipped. Reviewing the status of my order tells me nothing at all. It is still "Your order has been received and entered into Dell's Order Management System." I already knew that.

Simply suggesting that Dell should over-deliver throughout the order management process and not only when you first get the order. Let the customer know what's going on?
