DUAL DVI ON LAPTOP & PORT REPLICATOR

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jsun9 02/24/07

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR A VGA PORT ON LAPTOPS AND PORT REPLICATORS.

The laptop/replicator should come with two (2) DVI ports and the ability to add an adapter for VGA (DVI to VGA).

The dual DVI should allow for dual monitors and larger 30" monitors. 2 Comments »

Matte high-resolution screens

Monitors and Displays submitted by programmer001 03/05/07

Dell unfortunately jumped on the TrueLife display for laptops.
These are good for gaming and movies because of the colors and brightness, but are bad for working because they are too much reflective. I am a programmer and the reason for which I used to buy Dell is because of the very high resolution screens (UXGA, WUXGA). In facts I would like to see high-resolution screens available in more laptop models, possibly even in the 15" ones, and in particular I would like to see MATTE high-resolution screens available, not TrueLife.

I guess movies/gaming customers probably buy low-resolution screens, while programmers like me buy high-resolution screens (UXGA, WUXGA) and these are the ones that would benefit from a modern matte screen. A good choice for Dell would probably be to provide the low resolution screens as TrueLife and the high resolution ones as matte, while now it is more like the opposite.

Please offer matte high-res screens at least as an option. 6 Comments »

DVI for Notebooks

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by dellmanfred 02/20/07

I cannot understand why we still have to be punished with these vga plugs build into notebooks. Who's actually buying a CRT monitor these days so that he/she would need a vga plug?!?!
On top of that it must be cheaper too to have a straight digital ouptut without a D/A converter. So please, get rid of the vga plug and put a proper DVI plug into your notebooks. For the sake of our eyes!!!! 10 Comments »

Standard, Standard, Standard ...

Laptops submitted by fxmulder 02/22/07

Dell has been leader so far in standardizing and commoditizing the PC industry ... there is still a lot to do !!!

1) Promote & realize a standard power plug for notebook (I mean connector, amp, volt, etc.) - you and Nokia has been very smart at making it same for entire line of products ... go next ... make it industry standard !

2) Same for notebook batteries ... why not have a standard form factor (or 2/3) instead of one per make/model

3) let's put the power adapter connector on the battery itself so it could be charged when notebook is used elsewhere as well.

And finally look at other notebook components (video card, hard drive bay) - it would make upgrading easier and so you could sell more parts in future ;) 1 Comment »

Mr. Dell should appear on your blog more often

Dell Community submitted by pwalker 01/31/07

He's a leader in business and the industry and your customers want to hear more directly from him. They know he can't do it every day. Once or twice a month would be a step in the right direction. A video would be great. 4 Comments »

Electronic paper displays

Monitors and Displays submitted by endolith 06/10/07

Invest in companies designing smartpaper displays, so that they can develop really high-quality and fast color versions like LCDs, and then use them in laptops, tablets, and standalone displays.

It's energy efficient (longer battery life), lightweight, and doesn't strain the eyes as much as an LCD; like staring into a light bulb all day. 5 Comments »

amd/ nvidia again...

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by texashale 06/18/07

I know it has been said a number of times, but I want to throw my hat in the ring as well. I have had to make a hard decision to stop buying Dell PC's and start building my own again, simply because of the lack of choices made available. I have been building fairly economical PC's with very good performance using AMD dual core processors, Nvidia 590 chipsets and Nvidia graphic cards. As far as notebooks, I don't think I have seen any notebooks in this configuration. Seems like if you want an AMD based notebook, you only get ATI chipsets and video. If you want Nvidia, you gotta get Intel. I would love to see options to this effect being offered by Dell. I am an ex-employee, who loved his job, but was caught in the layoff in 2001. I have been a very loyal Dell customer because of the way it was handled, but if you don't have the products to fill my needs, what can I do? 3 Comments »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Give us the ability to eject a disc from a laptop's drive when it is powered off.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by joeevil5000 06/06/07

I have heard a lot of people asking for a warning that you have a disc in your CD/DVD drive when you power it down. The best remedy for this is the ability to eject a disc even if the laptop is powered off. It would take an extremely minimal amount of power from the battery to pop open a disc drive. If the XPS M1210 can detect wi-fi networks with the power off, something like this shold be extremely simple. 7 Comments »

Dell Thin Clients

Servers and Storage submitted by beijaflor 02/19/07

Dell is able to make full PCs for $359.

Imagine what would be the prize of "terminals" for thin client computing ...
- a low-consuming processor at 500-700 Mhz
- no fan design
- on-board 128 Mb flash
- on board 512 Meg RAM
- VESA mountable
- solid state architecture
- PXE bootable

- Remote OS and application :
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9097
Or even Windows Terminal Server for small deployment if people have the money to pay it.

Thin computing answers to 75% of needs related to computers in school, librairies, hospitals and more ...

Dell could even sell the servers coming with the "thin-clients solutions" ...

I also see the Screen+Keyboard+Mouse option

And think about the network ...

With modern thin-computing solutions, the deployments are made on a larger scale (thousands of terminals across fiber networks) and with thin-clients provided by a large company like Dell, the savings could be on the hardware AND on the software ...

Fix the BIOS to enable HIBERNATE & SUSPEND

Linux, Service and Support submitted by cement_head 05/03/07

Three major priorities should be addressed for the adoption of Ubuntu 7.04:

1) The Hibernate and Suspend functions should work with the BINARY (accelerated) graphics drivers from nVIDIA and ATI. nVIDIA has better linux support - consider switching to nVIDIA cards on laptops. HIBERNATE and SUSPEND are essential for laptops and for widescale adoption within the business/corporate world. DELL laptops have been notrorious for poorly written BIOSes that only will hook into Micro$oft windows and M$ ACPI scripts - while this has not been an issue in the past due to the monolith of M$; it is now an issue whose time has come. This BIOS (DSDT tables) issue has to addressed at the level of DELL, not Ubuntu. Consider the FreeBIOS project.

2) Wireless cards should "simply work". Major culprit is Broadcom Cards. They are a pain to install; and usually require an extra step. Consider adopting a different manufacturer that supplies & supports an open source WiFi driver.

3) AMD processors. They are better. They are cheaper. They use less power. The Turion (64 bit) is especially well suited to Linux. AMD & nVIDIA would be a formidable combination. Consider dumping INTEL.

Less important, but annoying:

4) iTUNEs. This is REALLY annoying. Goes to the heart of DRM. But, the pragmatic reality of today's world is that many people already have an iPOD. Maybe you (Michael Dell) has enough pull to get Steve Jobs to get his people to compile/script iTUNES for Ubuntu.

Looking forward to seeing Feisty on DELLs.

I love DELL screens - just keep the good quality!

Monitors and Displays submitted by l-roy 06/11/07

I just wanted to say "thumbs up!" for the great monitors. I hope that DELL
keeps the quality above all others. (which won't be too hard when you look at the Apple Cinema displays ;) 2 Comments »

Idea Storm is running out of ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by kblobo 06/25/07

This forum has become a long whine for Linux and Open source software. I doubt Dell will benefit from any of this in the long run.

Dell needs more original ideas. Sites like ideastorm may be a good start but the majority of the non-techie real world does not care about Linux or open source. They want an easy to use, capable, aesthetically pleasing unit. This is exactly why Apple's market share is growing.

Ideastorm needs to segregate all the OS and major software app's discussions and focus more on conjuring up real design or service ideas.

More Dell Direct Stores!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by winoffice 06/25/07

Most of the time, in the very rare event that there become more Dell Direct Stores, Dell adds them in areas where there is already at least one Dell direct store. Thus, if there is not a Dell Direct Store already in a certain area, then the probability becomes even less that a Dell Direct Store appears.

How about offering Dell Direct Stores all around the country? This way, it becomes equally convenient for everyone to obtain Dell products and services. 2 Comments »

Dell, Thank you for already having Ubuntu Laptops with NVidia Graphics Cards [UPDATE - BUT NO THANKS FOR REMOVING THE OPTION AGAIN]

Linux submitted by jmxz 05/29/07

Despite others not being able to see them, I successfully found and ordered a E1505N with NVidia

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&kc=6V440&l=en&o...

Video Card

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 [Included in Price]
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 TurboCache™ [add $79 or $3/month1]
The Idea: Can you figure out why others (including your "order change" customer support people) can't see it and fix that.

Perhaps you have some marketing material somewhere that says it doesn't exist; despite it being on your order form.

Same goes for your coupons - I've had people asking me why your $500 off $1399+ inspiron coupons "don't work" on your Ubuntu models - but it appears they actually do. 2 Comments »
