Standardized Full Spec Sheet for all computers

Dell Web Site submitted by blackbelt 07/12/07

Please standardize the specification sheet available on the website, please include it in an easy access PDF format instead of having to wade through flash advertising copy and include DETAILED information such as motherboard chipset/manufacturer, CPU details, RAM specs (cache, latency etc) and manufacturer, sound chipset, bios, hard drive type/speed/manufacturer, number of fans & sizes, case construction materials, etc. I don't like buying a computer where most of the parts are a mystery.
Sure not everyone needs to know, but for the geeks it is important information to determine the quality of the build. 2 Comments »

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Downloadable, PDF format, full technical specs for all systems

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by benjesuit 06/12/07 **REVIEWED**

Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied.
We are looking to improve the specs pages by making them consistent across all product lines, provide more in-depth specifications and making them available in a printable format.

Allow customers to come to Dell.com and Order just "Plant a Tree"

Dell Web Site, Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by clocks 06/27/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Allow users to work with dell to imrpove Dell's "green" image. Make an "Accessories" product to allow people to just order "plant a tree" or to order as many "Plant a tree"s as they want. This option was not presented when I bought a desktop just a few days ago and I personally would go back right now and order "Plant a tree" because I would like to.

I think that if nothing else, the few minutes it would take Dell to setup this option would give you guys something to point to, even if it wasnt an option that a lot of people had taken advantage of.

if you wanted to take the concept a step forward, build a few add banners/buttons etc to make freely availible with the code to insert one on your web page. The button would be something along the lines of "Join Dell in planting trees". Your logo is associated with an environmental practice, blue logo on green with various tree abstracts in the image, etc. Reputation boost, plus you have genuinely provided a capability to your user base and various concerns on the internet to actively take part in helping Dell be green.

Sure, maybe you are using a few hours of the time of your salaried workers who you already pay for to add the item to the site and create some logos but if you really care about improving your reputation in this area, it might be an investment well worth it. 14 Comments »

Dell add a dust/lint filter to the front of your desktop and laptops to reduce the cause of reduced cooling.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge 06/15/07

Dell add a screen/filter to reduce the amount of dust/lint that gets into the system fan/cooling system. This is not a problem in clean rooms where systems are probably tested but in the real world dust is everywhere, after any amount of heavy use the cooling system efficiency is greatly reduced by dust/lint build up. This can be an option if you do not want the exposure or legal ramifications on old systems, much like the Dell mouse pad on configuring a computer for sale.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

The Option to Preinstall Alternative Browsers

Software submitted by gossymer 06/20/07

When it comes to browsers, people are beginning to understand that there is a choice beyond Internet Explorer. Provide them with that choice when they buy their computer.

Let them choose if they want to install Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari (for PC) etc.

The reason I mention several alternative browsers is because, it really depends on the country.

America likes Firefox as an alternative while Europe seems to be just as interested in Opera. Then there is Safari for PCs which is making some waves- might be worth it to provide an option for it once the final version is released.

When it comes to tech news, browsers are making a lot of noise. This is an easy way for Dell to use that to its advantage.

NOTE: This is not more bloatware! The buyer decides if they want an alternative browser. Otherwise nothing extra is installed. 10 Comments »

Additional cosmetic customization options for Inspiron and XPS notebooks.

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by benjesuit 06/24/07

Color panels on the lid is a good start. But one would only get to enjoy that when the lid is down - which isn't often.

Therefore, I propose a range of additional cosmetics choices:

1. Choice of LCD screen bezel surround: (same range of colors for the lid)
2. Choice of Keyboard color (Black, Silver, Gray, White)
3. Choice of Touchpad/button color (same range as keyboard colors)
4. Choice of Keyboard surround color (Same range as lid colors)
5. Choice of LED panel light colors using colored inserts (Blue, cyan, red, green, yellow.) 9 Comments »

Dissipate heat from the back of the LCD; not the laptop's bottom

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by endolith 06/10/07

The name for these devices has been changed from "laptop" to "notebook", because the bottoms of these things get so hot they slow cook your legs if you try to hold them on your lap. I've been using mine with a big cloth pad underneath since I got it, and it still heats up my legs.

The problem is that the heat is designed to dissipate mostly from the bottom. That's why the modern Dell laptops have little rubber bumper feet, so that, theoretically, you'll use it on a table and the fan will draw air past the bottom surface of the laptop. Back in reality, everyone just uses them on their laps or couches and the little rubber feet break off and get lost.

What you should do instead is route the heat to fins on the back of the LCD, where it will easily be dissipated. (You know, the part that's almost vertical, prone to convection, and always exposed to the environment instead of legs?) The parts that contact the lap should then be thoroughly insulated.

Options for routing the heat into the LCD:

  • Actively liquid-cooled laptops with little pumps and such.
  • Passive liquid heat pipes using alcohol or other working fluid that condenses in the heatsink, drips back down by gravity into the main body of the laptop, is warmed and evaporated to flow back up and be cooled in the heat sink, etc.
  • Active air cooling with the normal laptop fan blowing air into open ducts that go up the LCD housing
  • Very passive cooling that just leaves open ducts for air to naturally convect up the LCD housing like a chimney.

For connecting the main body to the LCD:

  • Rotational coupling built into or coaxial with the LCD's hinges
  • Flexible hoses

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Dell change your CD/DVD's to SATA for cable reduction allowing better cooling.

Desktops, Servers and Storage submitted by jorge 06/19/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell change CD/DVD's on your Desktop and Server models (All) to SATA. Using SATA cables reduces any ventilation restrictions which can occur with IDE ribbon cables. SATA also reduces configuration issues for new computer users, reducing support calls.
