DELL should not fall behind they must offer the latest

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 26

This is the lates news from notebookreview.com - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4220< Slips Intel's Penryn Processor into Consumer Laptops
Submitted by Andrew on Saturday, January 26, 2008

HP has quietly rolled out the latest Intel mobile processor family, code named Penryn, into their Pavilion dv2700t, Pavilion dv6700t and Pavilion dv9700t consumer targeted notebooks.

If you visit HPShopping.com now and go to the configuration screen you will get an option for selecting an Intel T9300 2.50GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The T9300 comes from the latest Core 2 Duo line of Penryn processors and offers a larger 6MB L2 cache and about a 10% performance boost over the equivalent Santa Rosa processor. HP is one of the first major vendors to offer Intel's Penryn in a mainstream non-gaming notebook, DELL is notably absent from having Penryn available in any of its laptops at the moment.

--.A proof that DELL is behind again they should first introduce new technology like this to maintain no. 1 computer maker on the US as well as the whole world , Dell should answer now!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------... you would agree with me DELL is falling behind again with its notebook parts and etc... for example the PENRYN processor , HP has begun implementing this as an option on their customize laptop just check their website to see the proof , well Dell had catch up about their design like the inspiron 1525 and the XPS 1330 and 1530 to be slim not the old bulky ones they had before, but why the technology inside is behind, DELL? well to conclude this i think if Dell had catch up with their design outside looks they should also catch up with the technology inside their laptops and desktops right , as the survey what i read dell is number 1 in the US right now well to maintain that they should offer the latest and best technology that they could offer to the consumer. and a 15 inch LED screen like the 1330 has.

Offer HighResolution screens for your consumer Laptops as you do for the business Latitudes

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by rseibel 04/22/07

Please offer the highresolution screen for you consumer Inspiron and XPS laptops as an option as you do for the business line of Latitudes. It is not much more effort, but makes them much more attractive.

Now you offer 1280x800 i.e. 1 Megapixel aka. WXGA Resolution on 15,4" screens of your Inspirons, that might be fine for some people. But it is not appropriate for others like me.

I suggest to offer 1400x900 i.a. 1,26 Megapixel aka. WXGA+ or even 1680x1050 i.e. 1,76 Megapixel on your 15,4 " screens that is 26% respectively 76% more usefull screen space.

You offer higher resolutions for your Latitude laptops, why not for the regular user also? Apple is using HiResolution screens also..

Pros:
- One have more space on ones desktop and can be more productive by using the applications more effectively such as office, photoshop, movieediting, mindmaps etc.
- Your screen is fit for HiDefinition movies coming to the market now.
- Windows Vista has a vector based graphic user interface able to scale fonts appropriately and should be made able to adjust them as the user demands.

Cons:
- Sure it is more expensive to produce/assemble, but I am willing to pay some extra $ for that.
- The fonts might be too small for some people, but there is a solution for that with Vista.

Just an idea, fell free to comment! 6 Comments »

Implement an Option of an Intel Core 2 Extreme and a Intel Core 2 Quad processor and the new PENRYN processor on XPS 1330 and 1530 and a higher Graphics Card 8700gt or above

Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 9

dell should implement a Core 2 extreme processor as an option for the XPS 1330 and 1530 and a first quad core notebook , because the high end models have this , why not on the 1330 and 1530 XPS is high end right? and also why stick to 8600gt that there is a 8700gt or above graphics card , well the XPS 1530 and 1330 overall design is great slim light, well as an addition dell should also implement a PENRYN processor

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Push SSD in notebooks esp the 1330

Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by 500moldschool 08/15/07

Solid State Drives (SSD) are the way to go. I am in the market to replace my old trusty 500m from 4 years ago. However, I have found few laptops that are really worth replacing my trusty 4.9lb laptop with. Newer laptops are no doubt better, but in the range of the portable non-desktop replacing market I have been disappointed.

Until the Toshiba R500... Come on Dell, push the SSD technology and get a hold of this semi-ultraportable market!!! I mean why pay $500 (THAT'S RIGHT $500!!) for a 32Gb SSD in the 1330 when the R500 (although a little more $) is breathing down your Dell neck with a sub 2lb laptop with a 64Gb SSD? Oh yeah, I know why. B/c Toshiba is directly involved in the evolution of SSD technology. They just dont rely on others to make the drives and then buy them to put in their computers.

IDEA: bring down the cost of the SSD thru aggressive ordering. Send the relatively hefty 13.3 1330 XPS into a truly competitive weight category with the advantage of cost and a nice 13.3 widescreen w LCD technology.

Now that is a recipe I would use and buy right away. Until then, I will use my sub 5lb 500m until it dies. The cost of upgrading to a laptop with little advantage in weight is just not really worth it. We need a refreshing, appealing, non-black box, & AFFORDABLE portable product. 3 Comments »

Gorgeous, beautiful eye-popping design

Desktops and Laptops submitted by foobar 02/18/07

Dell needs to aggressively move away from being perceived as cheap and boring. Corrall all the confusing sub-brands into a cohesive approach that shows us a new, fresh approach to design. There is no reason on Earth why Dell has to have worse design than SONY or Apple. Indeed with your new hires, this needs to be the target. There needs to be a "Dell look" that is not "gray, dull, box"

Think Target not Wal-Mart. It is now an age of design and Dell should create a moonshot to lead the market. If Mike can put his personal focus on it, I am totally confident it could happen. We are rooting for you!!!!!!

no more ROXIO!!!!!

Software submitted by f4ll0u7 02/21/07

roxio is probably the worst suite of software i have ever used. it constantly crashes, burns sub-par CDs and DVDs, and displays error messages. PLEASE give us the option to not install roxio. either that, or let us choose NERO instead. nero is infinately better than roxio. 1 Comment »

Make the choice of Browser Optional or make it Firefox or Opera

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by badblood 10/26/07

Let us choose our default browser:

Or make Firefox or Opera the default browser, because they are better than Internet Explorer.

Please stop forcing us to use sub-standard software

I know this is a duplicate, but it is one of the most popular ideas and has been under review for such a long time that I wanted to put it up again.

I don't know about you, but waiting for an answer to this idea is getting annoying.

Provide a Category and Sub-Category Filter Button to the Site

IdeaStorm submitted by rexsolomon 02/21/07

IdeaStorm has been running a while and just like a real storm, chaos is in its wake.

The most popular ideas are mostly hardware issues related to laptops and the default operating system and startup configuration offered by Dell.

But the most important ideas that will move Dell's billion dollar businesses towards long-term success is not tactics (More RAM! Use Linux! Brighter LCDs! etc., etc., ad nauseam), rather a grand, bold strategy or vision.

Kindly add a Category and Sub-Category filter button to the site, so that your popular ideas will not be skewed towards eyeball time, rather the merit of the idea itself.

Popular ideas may be so only because of short-term immediate needs of the population on the site - but it completely loses sight of the real purpose of this forum. Comment »

Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Proof that Linux and OSS are ONLY for hobbyists!

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by phubert 03/06/07

Since so many have tried to say Linux/OSS are only for hobbyists and 'not for business', I thought it would help if we could supply anecdotal evidence of business, Education and government USE of Linux and OSS.

The title, clearly, is an exercize in light sarcasm. 552 Comments »

Ultra-portable subnotebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by thesun 02/25/07

I'd love to see Dell come up with a reasonable alternative to the Sony Vaio subnotebooks and the LG models. I'm a travel writer and photographer and need something that's small, has built in optical storage so that I can burn vital stuff to DVD and keep it in a separate place in case the notebook get stolen or the hard disk dies, yet still has a fully touch type-able keyboard and at least a 10.4 inch TFT screen. I'd like to see it with Linux, ideally, but could live with Windows. I'd love to see it keep the "one five" rule in mind: 1.5 lbs or less, 15mm thick, and under 1500 dollars.

If you think this is impossible, I've essentially seen this exact computer in Korea for about $1199USD, but it had Korean-only Windows and I wasn't sure if I could get it serviced in the States if anything went wrong. If Dell could approach that price point it'd be awesome, especially if it also was Linux compatible. No...I'll reword that: PLEASE make sure it runs Linux, as I can't use Windows for anything mission critical due to viruses and crashes. Lost too much data, too often, to ever go back unless I've no other choice. 1 Comment »

Dell Subnotebook

Laptops submitted by camelclass 03/29/07

Since the X300 has been discontinued, Dell doesn't have a really small and light notebook available anymore. I'd really like to see a Dell notebook with 10-11" screen and built-in DVD drive that weighs around 1.5 kg. Sony can do it and they can charge a lot of money for them, the market is there with very little competition. 3 Comments »

Put Ubuntu on a laptop with better specs

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by piratehead 10/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer an Ubuntu laptop (Inspirion or otherwise) with available discreet graphics, discreet audio, 8GB or more of RAM, a quad-core processor, bluetooth, next-gen WiFi, and integrated webcam.

I don't know how many of those are possible at this point, but each one is a step forward for people who are waiting on certain specs to bite on a Dell laptop.

Now that you offer laptops with Ubuntu on them, I really don't want to go to another company just to get the computer specs I want. I wish to vote for Dell with my dollars, paying for a laptop that has actually been tested and certified by the manufacturer to run Ubuntu. Please give me the opportunity!

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.
