give the possibility to choose the OS

Operating Systems submitted by nicolagiacobbe 02/19/07

Simply let the user choose what he wants. I had to put down many Dell offers for not having the possibility to avoid the Windows tax. A pre-installed Linux distro could be OK but the most freedom is to let the user choose which OS wants on his PC (if any). 5 Comments »

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Dell and MS XBOX Collaboration

Dell, Gaming submitted by sakeshotz 04/17/07

I would like to see Dell and MS XBOX collaboration in the gaming space. Microsoft has been able to tap a new audience with their gaming platform and this in many ways reinvents many consumers of their impressions of the Redmond company. Microsoft has turned the corner from being the global corporate monger into the cool next gen game producer. Dell can ride those coattails and make significant in roads by contributing to the XBOX success by creating and branding XBOX peripherals and PC-XBOX special collaborative software. Comment »

Liquidate the Company

Dell submitted by caymanbrz 04/17/07

Liquidate the company and distribute the funds to the shareholders. Sound like familiar advice by one Michael Dell to Steve Jobs in 1998?

Dell is a dud. Dell has no innovation. Dell is done. Thank god. 10 Comments »

I'm not a big fan of pink, but my girlfriend (and I imagine many females out there) would like to see a PINK Dell.

Nationwide Employment Law Attorney

WARN Act Litigation Attorneys

Lankenau & Miller, LLP is located in New York City. We are a prominent, respected and well-known WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act law firm. Our primary area of practice is protecting the rights of employees under the WARN Act, a federal statute, passed by Congress in 1988. The WARN Act requires that employers provide their employees 60 days advanced written notice of a mass layoff or plant closing. We have litigated more than 100 WARN Act cases--more than any firm in the country. We pursue WARN Act violations in any state through collaboration with our network of local attorneys. Our reputation for excellence in this area has had a nationwide impact. Our firm also represents employees across the country in wage/hour claims under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). These claims arise when employers fail to pay employees the overtime to which they are due because the employer makes them work "off the clock" or improperly claims that they are "exempt" from receiving overtime pay.

Aligning Ourselves with Others to Hold Corporations Responsible

We are counsel to the Guild Law Center in Detroit, Michigan. The Guild Law Center is a well-known not-for-profit organization that has testified before Congress on the Warn Act and publishes a treatise on WARN Act litigation. We align ourselves with this reputable non-profit, because we believe employees should be aware of thier rights and understand that assistance in protecting those rights is available at no cost. Our firm never charges any fee unless we obtain a recovery. We also have strong ties with dozens of law firms across the country who assist us in aiding employees who have been wrongfully terminated.

If you have been let go from your job as part of a mass layoff or plant closing and did not receive 60 days advance written notice, you may have rights under the WARN Act.

Our reach is nationwide. If you are an attorney in any state and have been approached by a client with a possible WARN Act violation, we will provide you with the tools, resources, and knowledge you need to appropriately represent them. Contact our United States WARN Act litigation law firm.

No mroe integrated Video Card

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bbacoyiannis 04/18/07

I think its time we move to the year 2007, make mandatory good graphics cards, no more integrated graphics cards. The amount of times of friends and families who have bought a low end system, only to complain and find out after the fact their games will not work due to the intergrated video card. They will then go out and buy a proper video card, spend the extra money and time to upgrade for a new machines.

Either place a sticker that will say not recomended for gamming or just put a decent video card into the box. 10 Comments »

Dell 3G Smartphone

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by captainsensible 04/18/07

Dell's recent axing of their Axim product line left a tear or two in the eyes of many. The well-loved PDA was a favorite, revered for its simple design, powerful processor, and thoughtful feature set. It looks like Dell may have a trick up its sleeve, however, as Taiwan manufacturer Quanta has revealed that it has been contracted to work on an upcoming Dell smartphone device. Codenamed "Fly," this handset will reportedly feature a full QWERTY keyboard, HSDPA, and more, all running atop Windows Mobile 6 Professional. You sneaky devils.

It is the best compromise between the UMPC form, a tablet PC and fully functional PC.

Mechanical Mouse Moratorium

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by sla161 04/19/07

The mechanical mouse is dead, or at least should be in my opinion. Anyone who has used one curses the mechanical mouse after a few days of use. Yet it costs approx $15 to upgrade from a mechanical mouse to an optical on Dell's website. I can get a basic Logitech optical two button mouse for under five bucks. Get rid of the mechanical mouse and give us an optical by default raising the system price a few dollars, or allow us to select no mouse and actually take a few dollars off each machine. It's not much, but for those of us who purchase huge quantities of systems, it all adds up. 7 Comments »

Upgrade your LinuxFoundation membership from silver to platinum like IBM, HP, Fujitsu, etc

Dell submitted by vfun 04/19/07

Most of your serious competitors (IBM, HP, Fujitsu,Hitachi) are Platinum Members of the Linux Foundation. Some of your lesser competitors are Gold Members (Sun).

Dell is on the list, but way down in the "Silver Members" category with smaller companies and companies I've never heard of like Celunite, Inc; BakBone, montavista, Spike Source and Progeny.

Surely Dell would rather be seen among the likes of IBM and HP. Upgrading your membership there is a way to help do that.
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/Members< Note that earlier I was offended that a Microsoft sycophant (like Dell seemed to be) was even on the list, fearing that you were undermining the organization rather than helping it. I only recommend this if you're more serious about Linux this time than you were in 2000 (http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66001) Comment »

Let customers choose what trialware/demoware to pre-install to subsidize their machine.

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by jmxz 04/19/07

Many people understandably complain about third party software on Dells (it's one of the top rated items on ideastorm).

Many people also respond by defending this software pointing out that it subsidizes the cost of the machines.

And perhaps show it in a "optional trial / reduced functionality software" section like this:

McAfee Trial - (subtract $10)
Norton Trial - (subtract $15)
AOL trial - (subtract $20)
MSN default search engine (subtract $20)
Microsoft Works - (subtract $100)
on your purchase pages.

That would give people who don't want the hassle of the third party windows software ways to avoid it; and it would give power users who don't mind it and know how to uninstall/avoid it the benefit of the cheaper subsidized machine.

Personally I would get them all -- yes, including Norton and Macafee and any other antivirus programs - because the first thing I'd do is remove Windows from the machine anyway. But it would be interesting to see if I can get a machine sufficiently cheaper that my savings would offset the time it would take to install Linux vs the presumably higher cost of buying a less subsidized pre-installed Linux machine. 9 Comments »

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Support Engineers that speak English

Service and Support submitted by scottgreer 04/19/07

Why is it so hard for Dell to hire call center employees that speak fluent, clear English? It, on average, doubles the length of a call (and my frustration) getting assistance on any issue. I can't imagine that it would cost so much to move those call centers back for all customers. Comment »

Dell For Me

Sales Strategies submitted by cpet 04/19/07

Let people buy computers for the way they live, not the way technology specialists speak.

Reframe the shopping experience around the consumer. For example, find out if they have kids. Will they want to take pics/videos of the kids? Will the kids be using it for homework, if so what grades?

Use that profile to guide customers to the right fit for them instead of asking them to research memory, processing speed, etc. Customization is only of value if it breeds convenience. 3 Comments »

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.
