Need Links For "Dell Outlet"

Sales Strategies submitted by xxp Jul 9

It is not possible to share any links to any form of inventory in the "Dell Outlet" and this is a costly mistake,

I understand that the inventory turns over quickly and that this may seem like a reason to not provide (any) links but that is, in significant part, incorrect.

As a free-lance computer support tech I am often called upon to recommend new purchases. I don't sell hardware so that I'm free to recommend anything. I always recommend looking at "refurbs" and Dell is near the top of the list. But if I'm asked to provide specific recommendations with web links for a customer to select from Dell itself gets in the way.

I can, and have, make a list of things to search or ask for when my client calls Dell Outlet and sometimes the client does make that call. (The _never_ use the online search.)

Note that by forcing this situation Dell has reduced it's odds that the actual ready-to-buy consumer is going to make contact. And, if they do make contact, it is via the method that is most costly to Dell -- i.e., a phone call to a live person.

Dell Outlet could improve the odds of contact and sale by providing "safe" links to inventory in this manner:
-- Let me search and find a set of items that are appropriate to the client's need and then let me send this "set" of links and descriptions to the client.
-- If the items in my lsted set have been sold out then you can link to items in inventory that are similar.

&/OR
-- Let me create an inventory search criteria set that I can be sure has specific outcome for crucial elements like Model lines, CPU lines (an 'exclude' would be handy here as I prefer to avoid Celeron and Sempron to assure customer happiness), memory size RANGE, disk size RANGE and so on including, of course, price RANGE and particularly, preferred software packages.
-- Then let me mail a link to this predefined search to my client.

In ALL cases, always allow me to see and select all available optional software packages.

Thanks. 1 Comment »

quick key

Environment submitted by coldtrain9 Jul 9

This may be beyond the scope of what dell does, but there has to bo some sort of computer technolgy involved so here goes! The idea is new type of lock for doors. Similar to doors where you swipe a card and it gives you access, this new lock would have a key similar to a mercedes benz key where you just push a button on the key to illuminate a infared beam you swipe infront of the lock for access. In the case of the technolgy malfunctioning you just use the key manually. 1 Comment »

College lectures solution

Education, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by t.t.braddock Jul 10

in college its kind of difficult to take notes on your laptop and record the teacher during lectures. so an idea would be is have a built in vioce recorder. so that you can type your notes without having to hold an vioce recorder at the same time. then you can rewind later and listen while you type additional notes and use to study off of later. 6 Comments »

Ergonomic keyboard for laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by gerrygiese May 28

I would like to see Dell produce a better ergonomic solution for laptop keyboards.

This could be accomplished by making the size and layout of keys on the 15" and up laptops larger so they are more like a desktop keyboard, at the expense of laptop thickness. They couldn't be full-size, but somewhere in between might work. This would be more of a true desktop replacement.

Even better, I would like to see a keyboard with a curved design, maybe similar to the Microsoft Natural keyboard but less pronounced, kind of like the Logitech Wave but without the vertical contouring. Having the keys at a slight curve would improve the horizontal wrist angle and help ergonomics significantly, especially for smaller keyboards.

This is an important area because of the large numbers of people moving to laptop-only computing. Thanks! 3 Comments »

Is Dell trying to cheat or did I miscalculate?

Advertising and Marketing, XPS products submitted by programatix Feb 29

Hi,

I'm not sure whether I'm the one who miscaculated or it is Dell who miscalculated. So for confirmation, could anyone help me out?

Take a look at the site,
http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1530?c=my...< the RM2,000 Instant Cash Redemption at the right most, E-Value Code R510217-WEB? The price is RM6,999 (include RM2,000 redemption). This means that the original price is RM8,999.

Look at the one on the left, E-Value Code R510209-WEB. The price is RM4,299.

Looking at both specifications, I can only see that the one at the right has the following added:

  • Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7700
  • 3GB DDR2 SDRAM
  • Blu-ray
  • 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
  • 3-Year XPS™ Premier Service Support with 3-Year CompleteCover

I tried building a system to match the one on the right using the template of the one on the left.
  • Initial cost RM4299
  • Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7700 - Add RM795 = RM5,094
  • 3GB DDR2 SDRAM - Add RM379 = RM5,473
  • Blu-ray - Add RM1879 = RM7,351
  • 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT - Add RM203 = RM7,554
  • Dell Care Premium Warranty - Add RM761 = RM8,315
  • Since E-Value Code R510217-WEB warranty is not Dell Care Premium, so - Deduct RM223 (I get this by building E-Value Code R510217-WEB and add the Dell Care Premium) = RM8,092

So, the price is RM8,092. If the RM2,000 instant redemption is included, the the final price is RM6,092 only. Why is it stated as RM6,999?

Thanks. 5 Comments »

Dell “How Computers are Made” Store

Advertising and Marketing submitted by doctorcox Feb 27

“Retail” store with a slightly different approach. Make the store look like a Dell factory. Some imagination will be required! Not just pictures on the wall but a very authentic looking “computer building assembly line”. Sales people could provide information about the factory—for educational purposes—and information about buying a computer.

I WANT TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW THEY ARE MADE.

Why do this? Because it would be interesting!
Build it and they will come. 7 Comments »

Save Xp!

Operating Systems submitted by dwood Mar 10

For as long as Dell is offering XP as a "downgrade", and M$ attempts to force Vista into millions of user's homes, I propose that Dell reject ANY hardware that does NOT come with DRIVERS that WORK with WINDOWS XP.

This means that ANY system DELL puts out on the market MUST have DRIVERS that work with XP as WELL as VISTA. (We wouldn't mind the same requirements for Linux :P)

Explaine why Dell recommends Windows Vista® ?

Dell Web Site, Education, Operating Systems submitted by yesmathew Mar 12

I saw many idea related to "Dell recommends Windows". Here is one more. Based on Home user or Business user, Dell website recommends either Vista® Home Premium or Vista® Business. Explain why?

So the idea is to educate user, why Dell recommends Windows Vista? Is there any page explaining why Dell recommends Windows Vista? hyper linked to heading "Dell recommends Windows Vista®".

Otherwise does not make any sense to just display "Dell recommends Windows Vista"! 28 Comments »

More feedback from Dell on popular ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by pjeff Feb 15

I would like to see more (official) feedback from Dell on popular ideas eg. +1000 ideas.
For example, many people have been requesting an LED backlit screen for the XPS M1530. Look on any forum where this model is being discussed and you will see people saying that they are holding off on purchasing until it becomes available (I'm one of them!) so it would be helpful to know what is happening.

Another example would be illuminated keyboards. Saying it is "partially implemented" doesn't really tell us anything. We know you have done that! If a popular idea is not practical or its implementation is problematic for whatever reason, communicate back so discussion can take place. This is how brainstorming works!

I also wonder how many good ideas are overlooked because Dell believe the cost would be too great for the product in question. Be upfront about your concerns regarding costs. For example, you may find that Inspiron/Vostro customers would not be prepared to pay extra for a premium screen and illuminated keyboard but XPS customers are. Post polls so that members can vote on these issues and provide you with accurate data. We are here to help so use us. 7 Comments »

Improve the web configuration - recommend based on what parts I desire

Dell, Dell Web Site submitted by clohman Mar 11

The Dell Web Site is frustrating. I have a few very specific components in mind that I want in a computer, but the web site makes it difficult to find what I want.

I would like to see a configurator added to the website that allows me to choose components, and then tells me which systems can include those components.

For example:
I tell it that I want:
A dual core processor between 2.8 and 3.2
4 gigs of ram
an nVidia gfx card with 512 ram
a 10k rpm sata drive

The site responds with: The following systems can be configured to contain your desired components:

Optiplex xxx
Precision xxx
Inspiron xxx 6 Comments »

Linux Hardware Compatibility List

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana 02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives...

We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Submit hardware specifications to the Linux Driver Project

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by upstaked 10/05/07 **REVIEWED**

Back in January kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman from Novell started a project offering companies free Linux driver development.

This proved so successful that Novell made it his full-time job and turned to a project with over 200 kernel developers: http://www.linuxdriverproject.org/ .

So Dell, submit specs and convince your hardware providers to do so too. I want to spend my money on great new hardware that runs on Linux.

We constantly work with our hardware partners to develop and maintain open-sourced drivers. Also, we make it clear that through their own developers (or other projects like the Linux Driver Project) they need to deliver on drivers.

Make Linux and no Operating system standard options on all future products

Operating Systems submitted by jervis961 08/17/07 **REVIEWED**

OK Dell you have committed to supplying Linux options in limited form. Since you have laid the groundwork already here is the next step. Every new product you release that needs an Operating system should have Linux and also no Operating System as an option in the configuration along side Windows. Since you have to write drivers and test compatability for Vista when making a new product just make it compatable with Linux at the same time. There will no longer be a need for a seperate sections for Linux or no Operating system since all of the products will have the option. this will help make your site easier to navigate for you customers. You can also create an ACCURATE help me choose section for the OS choices.

Check out what daniel_j has to say on the options we offer.

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057 08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.

I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Get GNU/Linux Machines in Retail Stores

Linux submitted by dpic Feb 14

Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! So what do you say, Dell? Why don't you try to put at least one of your Ubuntu machines offered in retail stores? 736 Comments »

Redesign the laptop qwerty keyboard to be more ergonomic!!!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ptcase 04/20/07

These days there are lots of folks out there who use a laptop as their primary computer because of business travel, school, etc. please make a more ergonomic keyboard that can pop up and out the the side to accomodate various person sizes. the person who is 6' 7" doesn't have the same hand size as the person who is 5' 4". The keyboard should be able to pop up and be adjustable in width and have the option of slight rotation of the keyboard to allow for more ergonomic friendly computer. Dell should be the pioneer in helping prevent its customers from getting Carpal tunnel syndrome. Thanks for your consideration. 1 Comment »
