Quad core processor laptop

Laptops submitted by ward733 Apr 5

Dell needs to be the first to empliment quad core processors in there notebooks and not only in the xps models..3rd quarter '08 intel will release its first notebook quad core platform.. when new technology say sli, and core 2 dou chips xps seems to be the first to land it and you have to break the bank to get the latest xps notebook..I think the inspiron, latitude, vostro notebooks should have the option for the lower end up to quad core. Xps and precision models should have a little better scale of processors including when released quad core extreme chips. 6 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Hello Again - Dedicated Teams

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering a dedicated team approach for customer service, where a customer would interact with the same people whenever they need customer care or technical support.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 84 Comments »

Axim XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by pocketdoom 04/11/07

The Axim x51v is close to two years old. You announced the XPS line last year. I have been waiting to upgrade my Axim X3. I did not like the buttons on the x51 so I did not buy it. I was looking at it for the last week changing my mind. When I went to buy it, Dell stopped selling it.

I have been waiting for the Axim XPS. A combination between the PDA and the DJ. Same size with all the functions of the Axim with the storage of the DJ.

Bring them back. 4 Comments »

Bring IT Back To US Shores

Service and Support submitted by 19rocketman67 03/02/07

It's quite obvious that even though Dell outsourced most of it's Service and Support it did no good to the bottom line as far as profits are concerned.
So let's bring Service and Support back to the US and make Dell the great company it use to be. 3 Comments »

Kubuntu, a moderator, and Firefox

Linux, Software, Laptops submitted by krissilver 04/02/07

1- Kubuntu linux - a brilliant and very strong OS which really should be up there and included. Its one of the best OS imo because its very much like ubunutu but much more user friendly to say windows users. Should def be included.

2- Firefox and Opera pre-install. Both a briliant browsers and I think choice should be given as neatly as possible to all consumers. In terms of setting one as default I think maybe thats best left to the user, and a small amount of info can be there, perhaps visually where all software is briefly explained and a new user can setup as they wish quickly and as best as possible for them.

3- Better looking Laptops - Dell seem to be really lacking in terms of size, style, colour and overall design. Get some more stylish silver and other laptops going, start being creative again.

4- Can I say that we are increasingly in need of a moderator and better indexing, cataloguing, organising of all the content here. There is a lot of duplication and its not entirely easy for people to avoid it because each rightly want to make a slightly different yet similar case. For say the top 10 idea's they need to be become official, and more focused set on the site, so specific things, additions to say the Linux pre-install area people can add distro's, comments there etc, rather than creating new pages everywhere and it ruining the stats in many ways. 2 Comments »

Free movie or music downloads with new system from Dell

Advertising and Marketing, Desktops and Laptops submitted by george_hewitt 04/04/07

Why not partner with a service company to offer new customers who buy a dell system free movie and music downloads.

At the rate people download these two types media. The costumer should be given other plus to buy a Dell. Free stuff!

Give a person a real reason to use there new system for fun. A safe an easy way to download and find movies and music.

The key is free movies and music. A good amount of each would be a reason to buy. 100 free movies and 10,000 free songs would be a nice start. 2 Comments »

Dell + Linux + Control

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by captainsensible 03/31/07

If Dell offers a consumer desktop/portable with Linux, it should be Linspire (previously Lindows) with absolutely no root access. Users could change some minor settings, and only install software from a list of Dell tested and approved sources to prevent users from "messing it up" like they do so well with Windows. This would be on the most basic machine, for your less technical user who still wants to get away from Micro$oft.

For the next level consumer, they could offer the same, but with development software, and some superuser privileges to allow more customization, and more software choices such as Apache/SSH/VNC/Samba, etc. And it would include a few service and support options from a third party Linux support company.

Finally, the third level. Still using Dell's preferred distribution, a complete open system for the Linux user who knows how not to "mess it up."

With Windows it's simple, they usually know what all the blue screens, what drivers work, what hardware is compatible, and how to tell you how to back up your data and reinstall when it all goes bad. But for Linux, just getting a DVD to play or copying some photos to CD for your average windows user using Linux for the first time could require some serious training.

But maybe, with the power of streaming video and broadband, there could be a community of users making videos of all the HOWTOs and guides out there to teach the world, and it would have to be free!

Pass New Law: Abandonware becomes Public Source after 5 Years.

Dell, Software submitted by reg 03/31/07

Windows 3.1 - Long gone in the history of Computing
Windows NT - No longer supported.
Mac OS 1 through 8 - not supported in any way, shape or form.

PASS THE LAW

Abandoned Software becomes Open Source after 5 years of discontinuance.

This opens software up for the world to still use.
Not the latest and greatest, mind you -
just yesterday's lukewarm leftovers.

Companies such as Microsoft can write their latest code,
but can not slaughter millions of machines in a single blow.

When any company stops supporting their packages, as previously supported,
the home government gets the final draft source code, made publicly available,
5 years later.

1. Old software programs can be maintained and salvaged.
2. Five Year buffer is an eternity in 'Computer Time' - protecting new software developers profits.
3. YOU can't get help anymore for Windows NT, but you can get the whole package and source code free. Use it as you wish.
4. PREVENT CORPORATE ABUSE. Such as the Total Windows XP shutdown, and forced death march into the Windows Vista camp.
5. Preserve Cultural Heritage. Data formats and information face total loss, in 20 years, could you open a Word 97 document? Most likely not. For the first time in human culture - the collective works of millions of people faces complete erasure. This is Wrong, and must be stopped.

<font> <u>The Digital Culture Preservation Act</u>

All Abandoned software and software platforms older than 5 years from the date of 'discontinuance' becomes public domain.
If original software developers still exist, they must provide Source Code to the Library of Congress.
The Source Code is treated as a book,
and put on-line as a digital publication. (ASCII Text File)
Along with downloadable working copies of the compiled program.
If the original software developers do not exist,
citizens may submit software to the Library of Congress using
an on-line form and upload service.
Old emulator programs are to be added to the Library too.
Then software can be preserved for computer platforms no longer in production.
(Apple, Atari, Commodore, IBM, Sinclair, and dozens more . . . )

PASS THE LAW.

Ubuntu preinstalado

Linux submitted by vpuch 04/01/07

Contract with RH/SuSe/Ubuntu for linux support as default option

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by tomwright 04/01/07

Whichever linux distrobution Dell chooses to offer, the mere act of offering it will cause less technical people to try it. While the current linux community likes the challenge of solving problems, most people do not. They just want to turn on the PC and have it work.

Offer the paid support from the distro(s) you offer as a default option in the price, allowing people to unselect it and save the cost. I am sure the distro(s) will like the revenue stream and Dell will avoid the problems of customers that did not understand what they were getting into, being upset at lack of support. 1 Comment »

Do not hire nontechnical people for techsupport

Service and Support submitted by jbrogers 02/17/07

This is the main problem with the India call centers - they have no idea what they are doing. They are obviously reading a scripted diagnosing tool and have no personal knowledge of computing issues.

I have both home and business accounts with Dell. When I call in for support on my Business account, I get a good old-fashioned American geek, who instantly understands that I am fairly technical, and doesn't treat me like an idiot.

The Indian call centers, not having knowledge themselves, do not recognize that I know anything, and treat me like an idiot as they read from the diagnosis tool. Yeah, I know the computer is plugged in. Yeah I know that I have internet connectivity. Sheesh.
