My Design

Sales Strategies, Software, Laptops submitted by hds272 12/29/07

I enjoy making graphics in photoshop and would love to have the ability to have dell put my designs on the laptop, maybe even engravings! Also allow a set of stuff to put on the fron and sides like the ZUne stuff. I would love to have some sweet abstract vector engravings on my PC!!!

That would be cool,

when choosing an antivirus for your laptop at dell's website i have notice why is it that all of the antivirus software are still 2007 , on the Hp's website they have updated their Antivirus software to 2008 i think dell should look on to this, why is it that they are behind in updating their antivirus software, i hope dell would update its antivirus software because 2008 is at its door step 4 Comments »

Chat support as good as phone support with ability to "transfer"

Service and Support submitted by jaylus12 07/11/07

Every department should have a chat support, and one chat agent should be able to forward you to another chat agent.

I like the online chat because I don't have to make a lot of noise on the phone in the office, I can multitask, and there is a printed "receipt" of the entire conversation when I'm done, however since I don't feel that I'm getting equivalent service on the chat, I generally phone in. Comment »

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

Hello Again - Dedicated Teams

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering a dedicated team approach for customer service, where a customer would interact with the same people whenever they need customer care or technical support.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 84 Comments »

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

Solid State Drive as option in Notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tablet205 03/28/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Definition

A solid state drive is primarily a data storage device, for use in computing applications that traditionally use a hard disk drive.

A solid state drive is based on non-volatile memory instead of the spinning platter and mechanical-magnetic head found in a conventional hard disk drive. With no moving parts, a solid state drive eliminates seek time, latency and other electro-mechanical delays and failures associated with a conventional hard disk drive.

Advantages

* Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
* Faster read time – In some cases, twice or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
* Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk.
* Faster boot and application launch time - Result of the faster read and especially seek time. But only if application already resides in flash and is more dependent on read speed than other issues, eg. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks & reads.
* Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts results in less power consumption.
* No noise - Lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
* Better mechanical reliability - Lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures, which apply to laptops and other mobile devices, or when transported.
* Security - allowing a very quick "wipe" of all data stored.
* Deterministic performance - unlike mechanical hard drives, performance of SSDs is constant and deterministic across the entire storage. "Seek" time is constant, and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up (See: Fragmentation).
* Lower weight and (depending upon type) size
* Faster than conventional disks on random I/O
Check out the Idea in Action on the SSD enhancements Dell is making.

Remove metallic Windows sticker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)

Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers). 23 Comments »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

More RAM!

Desktops and Laptops submitted by mwmtjm 01/30/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

I’ll Pay for It - Price Packages by Service Level

Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering an option that would allow customers to "buy in” to differentiated packages of service, including where they choose to have the service delivered from.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback!

Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, yes, the intent is to explore a “for fee” buy-up option from the standard warranty.

In this option we are considering, the standard warranty service would not go away, it would remain free with system purchase. And the buy-up option would be for incremental offerings, which might range from selecting to be served by local customer service agents in your country to other services such as system tune-ups, virus and spyware removal, etc.

Some of these incremental offerings might be included as the standard offering for premium products, but they might also be offered as an option for any customer to buy into – independent of the model of system purchased. For example, airlines have frequent flyer programs and Club Lounges. If you are a premium customer and fly first-class, you automatically get access to the Club Lounge. If you fly economy-class, you don’t, but you can still buy your way into the Club Lounge.

Again, none of the details for this idea are defined yet, this is just what we are thinking so far (based on your feedback), so you tell us what you think it should look like! 38 Comments »

Geeks to Grandmas - Service Customization

We're considering providing customers the ability to self-select their service queue based on their own technical capability, such as "Advanced Computer Knowledge," "Intermediate," or "Beginner," further customizing the support experience.

Anticipate the next step

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by lysglimt 04/22/07

Anticipate what customers are going to want next with their hardware.

Are they going to upgrade with a new harddisk?
- Then write a simple IKEA-style manual for that on the inside of the PC casing.
Anticipate what they will need and write how to get it.
Suggest a number of the part they will order.

- Are they going to upgrade their memory?
Say something about that.
Colour code the inside of the computer for more easy fixes of customers themselves.

Look forward 5-10-20 years. 1 Comment »

Bring back CRT monitors as an option

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by gadump 04/22/07

Please bring back the option of buying CRT monitors with high-end desktops. Preferably 21' or better. I know most buyers want flatscreens, but they're not right for everybody. Call it a premium item if you like and charge accordingly, I just want the choice. 23 Comments »

Better Support For Consultants & IT Professionals

Service and Support submitted by creativeguy 04/22/07

The Dell Certified Technican program needs to have added benefits to it. I have looked at the Dell Tech program several times, but I do not see any benefit to the program. Initially, the materials on the website were completely out of date. None of the 2 year old servers we had were even covered by the information. When it was finally updated, I realized the information was the same thing that I had been doing for 13 years. It is good for reference at best. We have most of our clients buy the Gold service agreements. As a consulting firm, our clients do not want to pay for us to be on the phone. All problems are diagnosed by our technicians ahead prior to calling in to support. You could save a HUGE amount of money on phone and support costs by having a DCT website where we could just cover the problems with check boxes, and then determine the replacement parts we would need. As a DCT, Dell would have confirmed that the technician installing the parts only service would be qualified. You might want to establish free training in the depots or if you go to store fronts, somewhere in the store. Why pay technicians to come out when you can have certified tech's everywhere. In some cases, we have clients that have home PC's that have the India support with them. If I have to talk to another script reader again, wasting my time when all I need them to do is order me parts ... If you put a program like this in place, have current hardware onsite, and made an effort to contact consultants and IT Professionals, they would flock to the program. I would be first in line. 2 Comments »

SOFTWARE INSTALLED OPTION

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by creativeguy 04/22/07

Just so you know - every single Dell computer that comes out of the box gets formatted and clean installed before it is ever turned on. When I am installing for corporate customers, we do not want your Dell support software, any of the AOL (etc) stuff, and all of the other stuff. To the companies paying Dell to install the crap (and SPYWARE), it never makes it to the user. To Dell, I will pay the couple extra dollars not to have this stuff installed. Give me an opption to select what I want on the system (EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM). There is no benefit to clicking on corporate from home. Why even bother have the sections? When you are dealing with corporate customers, we already have enterprise versions of Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus programs. 3 Comments »

No TPM

Desktops and Laptops submitted by marco925 04/22/07

All Dell PCs should not come with TPM at all until an owner override solution is implemented by the TCPA. Trusted computing can be a problem in the industry if there is no control by the user. I know that the software I run is what i want running and if I can't control it, I know I would get upset. Trusted Computing can be a great thing but it provides manufacturers and software publishers with more power.

The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is an alliance of Microsoft, Intel, IBM, HP and AMD which promotes a standard for a `more secure' PC. Their definition of `security' is controversial; machines built according to their specification will be more trustworthy from the point of view of software vendors and the content industry, but will be less trustworthy from the point of view of their owners. In effect, the TCG specification will transfer the ultimate control of your PC from you to whoever wrote the software it happens to be running. (Yes, even more so than at present.)

TC provides a computing platform on which you can't tamper with the application software, and where these applications can communicate securely with their authors and with each other. The original motivation was digital rights management (DRM): Disney will be able to sell you DVDs that will decrypt and run on a TC platform, but which you won't be able to copy. The music industry will be able to sell you music downloads that you won't be able to swap. They will be able to sell you CDs that you'll only be able to play three times, or only on your birthday. All sorts of new marketing possibilities will open up.
