Optional keyboard layouts - DVORAK

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Software submitted by bbr 06/25/07

qwerty was designed to be "inefficient" to minimize typewriter keystrokes from banging into each other. However, with software keyboard this problem no longer relative to the keyboard layout. And a different keyboard layout could actually "improve" the speed at which people can type.

I'd like to see other keyboard layouts, offered as options by dell. This would probably not hit-it-off very fast, but i think it's a good idea to "think different" and improve the technology we use, rather than stick with something as inefficient as qwerty.

The issue, and system are very well described here : http://dvzine.org/ 16 Comments »

Automaticlly shut down computers/laptops?

Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by theonlyho 05/10/07

I don't know if Dell does this or not, but I have heard of a software a few months back that a school has. The program is installed to the computers, so they automatically shut down themselves at end of the day, so even if people forget to turn them off, they will get turned off by themselves. If Dell allows this program to be installed into the desktops and notebooks, and allow users to set the time to turn off, it will be saving much more energy. And with that, it will indeed help global warming. 3 Comments »

Waterproof mouse

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by theonlyho 05/13/07

There's waterproof cover for keyboards, and ideas for the laptop, but what about the mouse?

I think for the wheel, not that it's a good idea, but it'd be a touch pad kinda thing. You'd move your finger up, and it'd scroll up? 6 Comments »

Enable us to change an existing idea vote, if we make a mistake

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/01/07

A few times I've accidentally clicked on the wrong button, or voted after reading the title of an idea but wanted to change it once I read the whole thing. Could you make it so we can still click the promote button after demoting or the demote button after promoting?

Better than having inaccurate vote counts because of clumsy people like me!

Thanks! 131 Comments »

Skinnable desktops?

Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by kschang 06/16/07

While Dell can't offer special paint jobs like FalconNW's Exotix, that doesn't mean that it's impossible to "skin" existing cases.

In fact, a case is basically a metal chasis with some cover plates, and a plastic face plate. As there are all these "skins" available for iPods and XBox's and whatnot, why don't Dell offer some skins for their XPS chassis, and later introduce optional faceplates with skinnable faces for the other series like Dimension or such? 2 Comments »

Simplest Laptop Alarm... Can it be this easy?

Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by kschang 06/27/07

I just thought of something that seems to be so obvious, it's... well... doh. Tell me what's wrong with the idea...

Latest notebooks have Bluetooth, right? (many/most of them anyway).

You need to "pair" Bluetooth with another device, right? Say, your phone?

Bluetooth's range is only, what? 30 ft at most? And that's controllable depending on transmission power, right? Actual effective range is a bit less.

Imagine this: say you pair the Bluetooth in the notebook to your cellphone. The cellphone stays in your pocket.

Someone steals your notebook. When it reaches 15 ft or so from the phone, the weak Bluetooth signal is lost, so the the device is disconnected, pair is interrupted.

ALARM THEN GOES OFF on BOTH the cellphone AND the notebook!

Can it be that easy to implement? Sounds like this is 99% software. WIth up to 128-bit encryption available in Bluetooth, this pairing should be almost impossible to fake. 11 Comments »

Consolidate all "Offer *foo* in *bar*" ideas into a single idea - offer your entire line, and all options, everywhere to everyone

IdeaStorm submitted by solarcanine 06/25/07

Dozens of ideas are posted in this format over and over again. I think most of us get the concept, and it boils down to:

Offer the entire Dell catalog - all OS options, all machine options, all accessory options - to everyone in the world, through every sales portal you have, all of the time.

I don't think it's necessary for a representative potential customer from each country in the world to weigh in with "Offer Linux in Botswana" or "Offer Inspirons to education users in Burundi" when the overall concept should suffice.

Dell, it's obviously a global market out there, and your customers around the world are making their desires known (over and over again) on this site.

Let's consolidate all of that motion and eliminate the almost-duplicate ideas by getting down to the base idea, so to speak. Comment »

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Dell EV | Design and Sell an Electric Car

New Product Ideas submitted by dhart 02/21/07

Dell possesses the fundamental resources necessary to produce an electric car for the 21st century:

- Dell brand name and a global market
- direct sales infrastructure
- global supply-chain network
- manufacturing expertise
- electronics expertise
- customer service expertise

Of course, driver and passenger computer systems in a Dell EV would integrate smoothly with Dell PCs at home and in the office.

As a bonus, merely announcing development of a an electric car for mass production would send Dell's environmental credentials skyrocketing.

Dell is in a unique position to launch disruptive technology into the auto industry with an inexpensive and unprecedentedly mass-produced electric car. Partnering with an existing small automaker would be a rapid route to design, regulatory compliance and mass-production. An EV as a product should be considered as a top-end evolution of the consumer appliance or gadget rather than its commonplace treatment as a relic of the 19th century. 13 Comments »

Dell List Computer Configuration Options in order not random.

Dell Community, Dell Web Site submitted by jorge 06/25/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell list computer configuration options in an ordered list not random!

When configuring a computer a list of options for lets say the processor should be in order based on speed or price, here's an example from the Dell Precision M65:

O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]

Whats up with this list? Totally confusing or leads to confusion, for the average Joe, yet again today I had to explain that Dell just lists things randomly not in some optimal way.

The list should read like this (or in reverse but in order):

* Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz/667Mhz) [Included in Price]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $37.35]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $103.75]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $207.50]
O Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7600 (2.33GHz/667MHz) Dual Core [add $398.40]

Make it so and quite confusing your customers!

Laptop with Numeric Keypad

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by brian78 06/25/07

I think Dell should offer an affordable notebook with a built in numeric keypad. This would be very usefull for people in fields like accounts who use it all the time, and the larger models like the Inspiron 9400 have plenty of space for it. I am in Australia and I could not get one, and there was no USB numeric keypad available as an optional extra. This forces people to look elsewhere. 4 Comments »

Create the iDell: Itunes, Safari, Ipod, and iphone connectivity with any Dell PC. The best of both worlds: make it easy for me to use the Apple products I love with the Dell i love--iDell. Offer itunes, safari, ipod, and iphone on the Dell configurator. Make it easy and seemless for Dell and Apple software and services to play together easy and simply. And, a certificate for $50 off an iPhone at Cingular would be a bonus too!!!! :) 6 Comments »

Demote an Idea should require a Comment

IdeaStorm submitted by s3indiana 04/03/07
