Now You Choose - Concept 2

Gaming, XPS products submitted by dell_admin1 04/25/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Participate in the product design process! Dell is using IdeaStorm to decide between two new product design concepts. Vote on your favorite and weigh in to tell us what you think.

When we unveiled the XPS 710 H2C at CES this year, we also uncovered it. There were a limited number of systems sprinkled throughout the show floor that had a clear side panel allowing easy viewing of the patent-pending two-stage H2C liquid cooling system.

Since then, more than a few people have suggested we offer a “panel with a view” as an option for our XPS 710 line. Now we need you to vote for one of these two options and, most importantly, share some reasons why you like it.

This “Now You Decide” vote campaign will be open from Wednesday, April 25 to Friday, May 11. The design that gets the most votes will be featured in a future generation of XPS gaming desktops.

Check out the latest Idea in Action on the new XPS 730.

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.

Solid State Hard Drive

Servers and Storage, Desktops and Laptops submitted by pablohs Apr 29

I would like to have a "small" solid state HD. The idea is to have a solid state (i.e. flash memory) HD for the operative system(s) - allowing for a faster boot. A large, more traditional HD could be use for the everything else. 11 Comments »

Unlock Sound Card Features on Inspiron Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by tigerforce Apr 13

The sound card on the Dell E1705 (and probably most recent Inspiron laptop can support all of these features http://www.sigmatel.com/products/pcaudio/notebook/stac9200.aspx but they have all been locked out of the software driver that Dell gives us customers. Additionally their are no ASIO drivers available from Dell and I really need this for my recording projects. Having the other features like setting both my audio jacks to outputs, manually setting sample rates and latency, and virtual surround sound would be soooooo Cool!
Now before you start calling Dell names, let me defend them by saying that they probably thought that your Mom might accidentally wreck her laptop after she messed up her audio settings and then blame Dell. But...
at least put the download on http://www.support.dell.com so all the audiophiles out their can get what we payed for. Dell, you don't have to
make anything new just unlock what already there. Please :) Oh and if you want more info check here (though i don't necessarily recommend this approach) http://www.notebookforums.com/thread169312.html

All operating systems on all platforms!

Operating Systems submitted by markvs624 07/09/07

Do just what the title says: offer all operating systems on all platforms with full support. Don't restrict Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Unbuntu to certain models.

Make the base price for all base operating systems the same: XP Home = Vista Home Basic = Unbuntu. No discounts at the entry level. No $50 cheaper for Unbuntu. No $50 more for Vista.

Give no incentive either way The same customers who buy XP Pro and Vista Ultimate now will still buy those versions in the future. LET THE CUSTOMER DECIDE. 48 Comments »

Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Price cut in Half, Dell needs to pass this on to customers

Sales Strategies submitted by hal2001 Apr 22

I think most of us who post here are smart shoppers and are going to be watching to see what Dell will do with this Intell price cut . Dell could play the Intell ball that's in there court now and bring back Dell sales and be a winner for the customer to. Let's see if price cuts start posting on their web site. Faster processors at lower cost equal better sales and happy customers. 4 Comments »

Offer No OS Option on all PCs for Home / Small Business Markets

Operating Systems submitted by gear Apr 22

Why not sell PCs with no OS installed and just include the drivers disk for popular OSes that are known to work on it like (XP, Linux, and Vista).

I already have licenses for XP and Linux and I can install my own here.

Having the drivers disk would mean I don't have to download them. 3 Comments »

Make Gigabit Ethernet Standard on Notebooks

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by techsage 02/24/07

This should be a given at the least for Small Business and above notebooks. Another option would be to at least allow an option for this with an additional charge. This feature is very important for those wishing to do quicker backups via the network (since this is faster than even via USB 2.0). Apple and Sony, if not others as well have this as standard at this point.

NOTE: I know that this is standard on XPS systems, but that is not good enough. 7 Comments »

Make XP/Linux drivers available for all model even if only Vista is pre-installed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Operating Systems submitted by vineets001 09/24/07 **REVIEWED**

There are good hardware models coming out. And only Vista is pre-install option. If people want to wipe off Vista and install XP or Linux, let them do that. Make a commitment to have the drivers available.

We're working on having drivers for the hardware we ship more widely available. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Stop Advertising Windows Vista On Your Linux Pages

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 11

A while ago I noticed the Latitude XT promotional demo video in the Linux section of the Dell community page. And questioned it's relevance then. In the open source page on Dell.com Dell is still trying to steer open source users back to Windows.

The Latitude XT is a Microsoft Windows only product and is not offered with Ubuntu or any other form of Linux so far as i know. In fact the demo video shows the Latitude XT running Windows Vista. Please stop badgering open source users and stop hounding them with this Windows Vista nonsense. We've already decided we're not interested. 7 Comments »

Warranty period, default value and asking "twice"

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by bbr May 30

If you select to customize a computer, you get asked "extra" whether you want a 3 year warranty.
This annoying, as you can select it in the customizer as well.

On top of that, in europe we have this thing in the law, which requires "ALL" hardware companies to offer at "least" 2 years warranty, by default.
A 1 Year warranty is simply not allowed.

So, why does dell offer a 1 year warranty? If by law we are entitled to at least 2 years? 4 Comments »

XPS 1530 OFFER 64 or 32 bit OS system, AND OFFER 64 BIT DRIVERS FOR ALL LAPTOPS and other PC's DEll sells... like other lower end laptop OEM vendors do...

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by contrast123 May 31

other vendors, I looked at, while shopping for a laptop, beatifully offered the OS system, in EITHER 64 bit or 32 bit. The world will eventually go towards 64 bit. Gateway is offering their FX gaming desktop with a 64 bit OS pre-installed.

Toshiba, also is selling a VERY impressive laptop at bestbuy with 450 gigs of hardrive, PLUS the 64 bit os system, which makes full use of the 4 gigs.

DONT LOCK THE CUSTOMER INTO 32 bit, thats horrid. Why would DELL DO THAT?. Your such a huge company, it boggles the mind, as to why, if you want to stay competitive, you would only offer a 32 bit OS system?. Revamp your deal with Microsoft, and tell them that if the customer wants to upgrade, that for being a dell customer, a dell customer can get the 64 bit OS without having to BUY it.

AND why would you offer 64 bit drivers ONLY for the XPS 1330. BUT
NOT HAVE THEM AVAILABLE FOR THE XPS 1530?????. It's ludicrous. So now the customer has to rag tag, and get the 64 bit xps1330 drivers, for the xps 1530, and end up sacrificing some hardware functionality, simply because DELL forgets one of the most CRUCIAL aspects of their machines....the OS ?....c'mon dell...whats up that, seriously..i mean, seriously, whats up with that.

EVERY SINGLE LAPTOP you offer, should have available, for it, on your website for download, 64bit drivers and 32 bit drivers.

64 bit drivers are the future, need I tell this to a tech company like dell?....yup. From a humble customer that likes your products, owns TWO XPS laptops, usses an xps 1330 for presentations, powerpoint presentations that I do, and I really love my computer, but would like
to love a bit more. Just a little more. I love the design quality, build wise, is second to none. If you fix these other little details, you will rule, your competitors will have a VERY hard time matching you in the laptop vending industry.

Please consider my ideas. I own two xps's a 1530 and a 1330.

Again thanks, for offering this forum to place our ideas. I have seen some ideas implemented, and would really enjoy seeing some of mine(others have the exact same idea as myself) being implemented.

I know I cant be the only thinking this way. I know I'm not. I highly doubt Dell also thinks I am alone with these thoughts. 4 Comments »

operating system product key

Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by ghuiber May 28

Dell should keep product keys on record and provide them to system owners upon request. Since such requests have nothing to do with hardware service, they should be accommodated regardless of whether the system in question is still under warranty. Storing a string of letters and numbers indefinitely cannot possibly cost Dell all that much, and the request can be handled entirely online, with zero labor. A nominal fee of say $10 per request should more than adequately compensate Dell for all this trouble.

I am bringing this up because the Microsoft CoA sticker on my Latitude D400 faded then rubbed off entirely. About a year later my hard disk failed, and I am now awaiting delivery of a replacement. But I will have to re-install the Win XP OS, for which I paid fair and square, and I can't because neither you nor Microsoft are willing to supply me with the Product Key. The Microsoft rep said that OEM pre-installed OS's are the responsibility of the said OEM. And your guy said that since my machine is out of warranty, I am out of luck. 11 Comments »

Remove any reference to Vista from the "Still looking for Windows XP?" page

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by drewness May 21

When the "still looking for Windows XP?" link on Dell.com is clicked, one is subjected to an obvious pitch for Vista. Get rid of any reference to Vista from this page! It's a no-brainer! 1 Comment »

Sell AC adapters at retail stores

Advertising and Marketing, Laptop Power submitted by undead999 May 7

Since Dell is selling computers at retail outlets offer ac adapters for laptops at best buy, staples and anywhere you sell laptops. Also offer ac adapters at your kiosks.

AC adapter usually fail without warning, waiting days or weeks for a replacement AC adapter is not always an option for many users. Generic adapters dont always work on Dells, in addition many are underpowered espicially for 17 inch models Comment »

Ubuntu on all models where it works

Linux, Operating Systems, Small Business submitted by jonsmirl 08/01/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I'm still throwing away copies of Windows. Recently I have ordered some Dimension 9200s from Small Business. All of these machines are running Ubuntu today without problem. They're being used to replace some PE400SCs that are starting to die. A 2GB quad core for $649 was too good a deal to pass up. It makes a great small server.

Please offer Ubuntu as a choice on all configurations where it works. I would have still paid $649 for the box and you could have kept the money you're sending to Microsoft.
We continue to explore different Linux opportunities on our systems. Check out daniel_j's comment below.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.
