Linux, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by lonniebiz 05/07/07

Don't assume linux users want low end hardware. I have money in hand for a Linux Laptop with a 20 inch LCD two 200 gig hard drives and 4 gigs of Ram, a TV turner that works on Ubuntu etc.

Make it and we'll buy it! Comment »

Dell... Does Linux/Microsoft Matter?

Dell Web Site, Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by oagostinho 04/12/07

In this days, I've just thinking and reading about linux/vista/mac os x. Thanks by Moore's Law, we know that every 18 months, new cpu processor's will be much powerful than the old ones... more or less, anyway! In that way, I ask myself if I can use, right now, my computer 100% of their capacity?

The answer is not...and, why not? In one side, I think, it's about operating system and their applications, and other, it's about, I don't know what really matters me. I've just bought what I see that the vendors wanted to see when I buy a new computer, with sales off, marketing technicals, etc.

And, please, Dell don't sell in that way, well in a intelligent way, and what does that mean? Clarify me, when a I buy a new computer, what really matters me. For example: Can you ask me if I'm a student or a CEO? What are my hobbies? How long I use my computer? I'm traveling or not? Would I always stay connected or not? And, with that information, give your recommendations about how much memory, processors, etc! Maybe, which applications and configurations will be better for what I'm expecting for my new computer.

Smartphone

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by gautam 02/16/07

The Dell Axim PDA is not super-popular, but I think if it moved into the SmartPhone realm (especially in order to compete with upcoming iPhone) then it could pick up some market-share and be a great device for US cell phone providers. 92 Comments »

Dell's Dynamic Do Over

Healthcare submitted by jtcoppedge 04/16/07

A basic Extreme makeover team wihin Dell that choses a candidate that has volunteered to be made over ( whether it has to do with their physical health or their mental heath ). The program is designed to make them more confident, more educated in their position, and to reach further than they ever imagined. Not to mention it would make great publicity in the community. Dell could really use it internally as well as externally. 4 Comments »

Extra-Depth Laptop Shoulder Bag for the Working Person

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by mwcpayne 04/20/07

There remains a need in the market for an extra DEEP / THICK laptop bag (I think the term "width" has already been used for a wide screen).

The trend has been toward slim bags that hold the laptop, cord, and a few files. That may be fine for some, but many of us need - on a daily basis - the computer AND cords AND a couple inches of files AND a small textbook AND a few other electronics AND to eat for lunch.

Backpacks work, yesmaybe even something , but aren't exactly professional. The multi-bag option is available, of course, but again suffers from lack of professionalism and organization - and also uses up both carry-ons allowed when flying. Non-computer bags might work, but always at risk of harming the computer.

I suggest a practical, top loading, working shoulder bag with a) padded computer slot, b) handy side pocket for an organizer, pens, memory keys, etc., and c) an additional 3 or so inches over the regular dimensions to accomodate other papers.

Thanks. 10 Comments »

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Medical History USB Drive (or whatever)

Healthcare submitted by chrisrose.chrisrose 03/03/07

Boy, whatever happened to the idea of having a smartcard or flashcard (something akin to an SD) or a USB drive on which your entire history of medical records and charts are kept?

I've lived in 12 addresses in 16 years, and every time I move, I say goodbye to a doctor and all the specialists who've consulted. Getting those guys to share records with my new doctor is like pulling teeth. I just want something that a patient could ask doctors to copy their own medical records onto, and reasonably portable, and that is widespread and widely recognized -maybe it could have a big red cross on it, or one of those stick-with-a-snake dealios (that is, Rod of Asclepius) on it.

This is not like a photon torpedo or a teleporter, this is technology that is available now. What's needed is some big market player on the technology side with some leverage to promote and popularize it - because the medical community is too disjoint to quickly come to consensus about issues related to technology. Make it something that is associated with Dell and has an altruistic spin - "Look what Dell is doing for the health of your family. Dell cares (tm)". But make it something that will still be readable over the course of a human lifetime (not, say, like an 8" floppy) and give it reasonable encryption. Why should I have to rely on some dime-store jewelry to tell ER workers that I am allergic to penicillin? 6 Comments »

medical computer

Healthcare, Service and Support submitted by arthus 02/21/07

Pruduce a "medical computer".

the requirements are: to clean easily; smooth surfaces without recesses at the case; silent

what about a white Case?

Not even everything can be realized by Thin Clients so we need in some special rooms some special Computers (e.g. investigation rooms) to keep hygiene regulations. 2 Comments »

your can do superb Job in the Healthcare Arena

Healthcare submitted by hitech 02/20/07

Dear Dell family:
I am a practicing Physician and advanced computer user. Althought Dell have a section of its' website dedicate to Healthcare, in essence it is the same like the bussiness section and through the years I have bought so many computers for my family, friends and corporate "almost all are Dell', yet none sere bought throught the healthcare section of your site " all of these friends are M.D.s"
Particuarily with the upcoming huge wave of switching to E.H.R. records, the Healthcare industry will be very hungry for new Computers.
If you wnat to add a real meaning to the Healthcare section you would better include hardware and software that are Geared to Healthcare and Adpot the need for new Medical Theories in to your Section
One Simple Example that will appeal for end users is to incorporate some of the incredebily Convenient Medical Software that surpasses it hardcopy versions and saves doctors tremendous time " for Example the Electronic PDR, which by the way does not cost much either" and bundling some of those will have a benefit for everybody " Considering that the Giant Dell will have a better rate to buy these and pass it to comsumers"
As for Corporate you will need to show that your hardware is preconfigured to meet the Tommorrow of Medicine " and Example with an advanced sound card and ample Ram for Voiced recognition Technology"
Best of Luck 1 Comment »

Linux-based UMPC maybe XPS-branded

Linux, XPS products submitted by greenpc 03/20/07

Rebadge the Gigabyte U60 as the Dell XPS U60 and mix it up by developing a Linux UMPC OS to compete with the crappy UMPC XP implementation. I can see it now - the Dell XPS U60 featuring Ubuntu to go OS. Comment »

Dell Creations: Virtual Computer Manufacturers

Dell submitted by orilotan 04/24/07

Dell should allow organizations the ability to apply their brand value and customer management capabilities on Dell manufactured computers. This would utilize Dell’s manufacturing economies of scale and logistical capabilities while allowing others to accommodate and support their customer needs. This concept is common in the wireless service MVNO – (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). Why not allow some one like Google to configure a co-branded “Google Box – a Dell Creation” with all of Google’s applications. Dell would take the orders, manufacture the boxes and send it to the customer. Google would handle the rest. Revenue would be split across both companies.

As a result customers would have more configuration and service provider options. 1 Comment »

Dell Should Make a XPS M1410

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by cyborganizer 03/05/07

Dell should make a 14.1" model of the XPS 1210. It should have a better graphics card (around the the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS range). The Glossy 1440x900 display and the camera that rotates 180 degrees are also important. 8 Comments »

Computer Insurance PC

Sales Strategies, Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by oagostinho 04/30/07

I think that'll be very useful if I can buy some kind of insurances for my PC (desktop and laptop), and pay for that with a competitive price, of course! For example, if I lost my computer, some damages, and maybe, if my computer will be replaced for their brother most ne, in one year. See Ya! Open Source, the taste of freedom

Linux, Software submitted by drahnreb 03/02/07

Open source give us the taste of freedom, to do that with our hardware, what ever we want to do. We are grown up and mature customers we need no paternalism in using pre-instructed software. Dell is a fee company in a free world. Give us the freedom too, and support open source.

Solid State Drive as option in Notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by tablet205 03/28/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Definition

A solid state drive is primarily a data storage device, for use in computing applications that traditionally use a hard disk drive.

A solid state drive is based on non-volatile memory instead of the spinning platter and mechanical-magnetic head found in a conventional hard disk drive. With no moving parts, a solid state drive eliminates seek time, latency and other electro-mechanical delays and failures associated with a conventional hard disk drive.

Advantages

* Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
* Faster read time – In some cases, twice or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
* Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk.
* Faster boot and application launch time - Result of the faster read and especially seek time. But only if application already resides in flash and is more dependent on read speed than other issues, eg. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks & reads.
* Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts results in less power consumption.
* No noise - Lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
* Better mechanical reliability - Lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures, which apply to laptops and other mobile devices, or when transported.
* Security - allowing a very quick "wipe" of all data stored.
* Deterministic performance - unlike mechanical hard drives, performance of SSDs is constant and deterministic across the entire storage. "Seek" time is constant, and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up (See: Fragmentation).
* Lower weight and (depending upon type) size
* Faster than conventional disks on random I/O
Check out the Idea in Action on the SSD enhancements Dell is making.
