Update M1330 GPU to beat specs of LG P300
Gaming, XPS products submitted by tenrou

Basically LG of Korea has released a 13.3" notebook called Xnote P300. Link here: http://www.lge.co.kr/brand/xnote/product/BrandProductListCmd.laf?brand=XNOTE&...< notable thing about this model it the inclusion of a Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS with 256Mb of dedicated VRAM and the possibility to configure it with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7700. It also weighs in at just 1.6kg.
The 8400M GS in the M1330 is definetly lacking in power I'm hoping that Dell might consider upgrading the GPU in said laptop in conjunction with the introduction of the Penryn processors in early January.
Please, I'm dying to find a properly portable laptop to do graphics programming on (my major at the university) and that I can buy in Japan.
Please promote this if you'd like to see the GPU of the M1330 upgraded to *at least* a 8600M GS with 256Mb gddr3 VRAM. Or at least have the option to select this more powerful GPU along with current offerings in the GPU department.
PS. s-video out would also be *very* nice as well as 1440x900 resolution, but I'll make separate idea-entries for those. DS.

Improve the DELL XPS 1530 this 2008 to attract more consumers that love DELL's Laptop

Well the specs of the currrent xps 1530 is quite good but it lacks something, DELL consider another option about the screen resolution and WLED and also it lacks 1 USB not like inspiron 1520 it has 4 USB ports i think you should put 4 USB Ports, also the Speakers i think you should put some nice speakers on it like HP done to their pavilion line maybe you should team up with BOSE or LOGITECH or CREATIVE , and also improve your touch sensitive media buttons and i have heard many complaints about the xps 1330 slot load optical drive ,well i don't know if this problem is with an 1530 also , I'm Planning to buy one but it seems that the DELL XPS 1530 right now has a lack of features but well over all its a Very Good Nice Design , and also make the DELL logo at the back of the screen Glow put some led lights on it so that there is kind of touch that you had an XPS laptop like the high end model that it has some lights on the Logo, and the aluminum brushed finish i think you must improve it might consider another material. i hope you should also consider the tuxedo black color to be a GLOSSY FINISH like the HP pavilion , but maintain the design with silver lines as well as it will be glossy also, well over all a Dell has a nice and a Very Good Product and i hope they will apply some of ideas i talk about , the last thing is that Please change the Color of the remote maybe design a remote that its only on a XPS line because the color is boring, well keep it up dell and i hope you will apply this on your DELL XPS 1530 this coming 2008 o hope there is an improvement

Hi all, i don't understand why apple is the only company with a coherent design.
I'd like to see Dell's notebooks (especially XPS models) in ONE AND UNIFORM COLOR ONLY: all black; all white; all ruby. fullstop.
Another feature i really love is a backlit keyboard witha sensor that switch it on and off depending on the outside lgiht. while you are at it put a sensor for the monitor too.
thanks for your attention

Need Gigabit Ethernet in M1530.
XPS products submitted by hoodedthing
12/06/07
What about Gigabit ethernet...? It's really not new technology, and it's pretty dissappointing not to see it in the m1530. It wouldn't be that hard to implement now.. Just start sticking gigabit ethernet ports in the laptops instead of 10/100.
This kind of thing is pretty easy to do, it's not expensive for you guys, and makes a huge difference in transfer of files for wired internet. Put gigabit ethernet in the 1530.

Sell the XPS and Vostro lines at Staples too...not only Inspiron
Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by winoffice

I know that Dell began to offer computers for display and sales at Staples recently - GREAT MOVE! But unfortnately, this concerns only Inspiron...I cannot wait to try out some XPS computers at Staples and order them there!
I went to the Staples Web site (http://www.staples.com), clicked at the "Computers and PDAs" link and ended up at http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?&secondlevel..., clicked at the "Dell Computers" link and ended up at http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?&secondlevel....
I was disappointed on discovering that only Inspirons were offered - is it so hard to sell the higher-end XPS and Vostro lines at Staples? Please sell the XPS and Vostro lines as well! XPS systems that I would want to see in Staples stores and on the Staples Web site include but are not limited to the following.
- XPS M1330 notebook - XPS M1710 notebook - XPS M1730 notebook - XPS One desktop (all-in-one) - XPS 420 mini tower desktop - XPS 630 mini tower desktop - XPS 720 tower desktop
Vostro systems that I would want to see in Staples stores and on the Staples Web site include but are not limited to the following.
- Vostro 1400 notebook - Vostro 1500 notebook - Vostro 1700 notebook - Vostro 200 slim tower - Vostro 200 mini tower - Vostro 400 mini tower
Also consider the OS on most computers in Staples stores - Windows Vista Home Premium or Basic. However, it would certainly be ironic if Vostro and XPS (which has the most features compared the Inspirons) computers came with Windows Vista Home instead of Ultimate (which has more features than any other Windows Vista edition). Besides, the XPS and Vostro systems that I tried out at Dell Direct Store kiosks had Windows Vista Ultimate, and the offerings at Staples should at least be the same but certainly not less. So please Dell, make the XPS and Vostro systems that will be offered in Staples stores and on the Staples Web site come with Windows Vista Ultimate, not Home Premium/Basic.

Ultra quiet fridge case for XPS and workstations
XPS products, Precision Workstations submitted by digitalexit
03/12/07
With all the heat generated by the CPU, the chipsets, the GPUs, and the hard drives, it gets very hard for me to DIY a workstation. Too many fans will create too much noise for audio production, and liquid cooling is still not a easy thing to accomplish, especially for someone who's blown up a chemistry lab in high school.
I propose a new workstation/gamestation design: a fridge. Well, not as cold as a fridge, because I don't want any condensation when I open the thing, but 25C should be ideal. The case will have the radiator built in the front bottom, 2 or more hot-swappable power supplies in the back bottom. The motherboard will be mounted in the top front area, with 9 3.5" drive bays in a 3x3 matrix mounted from the side just below, between the radiator and motherboard. The back of the motherboard should have no connectors what-so-ever, front and back USB/Firewire/Ethernet ports should all go via headers. Cables from the extension cards should all go through a sort of cable organizer that seals outside air from inside.
An external drive bay boxes is needed to add DVD drives, should go through a eSATA port from the back and can be placed on the desktop or mounted on the top of the chasis.
The whole idea is to keep the inside in and outside out, so one can keep the total temperature of the inside at a reasonable degree. If necessary, and probably is, pipes could connect the radiator directly to the CPU, the chipset, the GPUs. And cooling pipes should also go through every internal bay to cool down the drives.
Absolutely my best and most complex idea yet.

dell not competitive
Sales Strategies submitted by barhow99

I was almost ready to order the XPS 410 when I decided to do a little comparison shopping. On the HP web site I found a model which appears to be similar to the XPS410 - the d4790y. Customizing it with virtually the same options as my XPS 410 choices I found the price to be about $200 (about 10%) cheaper. I have had good experience with Dell computers in the past but now I am strongly considering ordering the d4790y. I recently read that HP has surpassed Dell in sales. This may be why.

I have been looking around many laptops from dell, and I must say I'm amazed. But even though the products seem fantastic overall, I still want XPS series to broadband itself to give more options.
My favorite laptop so far was XPS M1210; due to its amazing idea to pack a punch in something very small. My idea is to create next generation that focuses more on its size - since M1210 is very thick compared to other ultra portables. Anyone with me on the idea of creating ultra portable gaming laptop?

Push SSD in notebooks esp the 1330
Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by 500moldschool

Solid State Drives (SSD) are the way to go. I am in the market to replace my old trusty 500m from 4 years ago. However, I have found few laptops that are really worth replacing my trusty 4.9lb laptop with. Newer laptops are no doubt better, but in the range of the portable non-desktop replacing market I have been disappointed.
Until the Toshiba R500... Come on Dell, push the SSD technology and get a hold of this semi-ultraportable market!!! I mean why pay $500 (THAT'S RIGHT $500!!) for a 32Gb SSD in the 1330 when the R500 (although a little more $) is breathing down your Dell neck with a sub 2lb laptop with a 64Gb SSD? Oh yeah, I know why. B/c Toshiba is directly involved in the evolution of SSD technology. They just dont rely on others to make the drives and then buy them to put in their computers.
IDEA: bring down the cost of the SSD thru aggressive ordering. Send the relatively hefty 13.3 1330 XPS into a truly competitive weight category with the advantage of cost and a nice 13.3 widescreen w LCD technology.
Now that is a recipe I would use and buy right away. Until then, I will use my sub 5lb 500m until it dies. The cost of upgrading to a laptop with little advantage in weight is just not really worth it. We need a refreshing, appealing, non-black box, & AFFORDABLE portable product.

Make the XPS M1730 more customizable
Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by sharoz
09/30/07
The XPS M1730 is very powerful, but we need the ability to customize. Allow all possible combinations of available CPUs, RAM, hard drives, dvd drives, and optionally color.
Please also allow customers to get only ONE graphics card and add a second GPU later. Dual 8700s is little overkill for some, but in a year, adding another card may be worthwhile (cheaper).

Proper Professional Ports for Notebooks
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products, Precision Workstations submitted by icarus75
05/13/07
I am asking for proper ports on Dell Notebooks - specifically the XPS and Precision series. This includes:
- One 6-pin Firewire 400 Port &
- One 9-pin Firewire 800 Port (Both with Texas Instruments 1394 Controllers)
- Dual eSATA Ports (RAID Capable)
The current integrated 4-pin 1394 Ports are incredibly inconsistent and unreliable for 3rd party Audio/Video Interfaces. I have an $2700 Inspiron 9400 that is incapable of working correctly with M-Audio and Presonus Firewire products.
SCRAP Ricoh and O2Micro Controllers - They DON'T do the job!
eSATA is the fastest standard for external storage, Dell should be taking advantage of this.

Notebooks - better quality, better options, better design
Sales Strategies submitted by dspector

I have been in the market for a laptop for almost 6 months now. I have avoided buying one as I havent found one that actually fit my needs perfectly.
14.1" widescreen notebook are arguably the perfect balance between the small, yet mobile, 13.3 or 12.1" screen, and their mid range 15.4". For those of us who want a laptop that is portable yet viewable, 14.1" is the ideal candidate.
Now if we take the 14.1" even further as a multimedia portable machine, it should incluce all the bells and whisles like memory card readers, svideo (d620 doesnt have) and even a webcam. And it should all be packaged in a thin and light casing that is still durable and stylish.
That is my recommendation to dell.

BLACK backlit keyboard for Dell XPS M1730
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by lorax1284
08/31/07
I know there are threads asking for Backlit keyboards: many of them merged into one.
Dell is introducing a backlit keyboard in the XPS M1730. Super.
But it's white-ish colour contrasts badly with the case.
Other comments about how "fugly" the XPS M1730 have been mitigated by the appearance of better photos (mostly with the screen / lid closed!) so maybe the outside of the M1730 case will be just fine... but that white backlit keyboard is a non-starter: opening the lid for the first time will be like seeing a beautiful stone along the forest trail, only when you pick it up, underneath is gross things crawling over other grosser things.
Consider this a backpedal from my "I'll wait for the XPS redesign" idea, cuz it's starting to look like I really only have to wait for Dell to source a black backlit keyboard.

Dell Bounty -- Ubuntu Bounty

09/07/07
anyone ever look at the dev pages on ubuntu's website well they have bounties on there that people can try to claim by solving issues and developing part to software that the team doesnt have someone that can do it already or doesnt have the time to deal with it
i think it would be an effective system for dell to use with its linux offerings offer bounties on drivers and other such things im sure that if given the specs for some of their wireless network card and a bounty someone would gladly race to see who can build the drivers first
something that if the specs where released for the interfaces and bounties where given that i can think of are
laptop web cams 802.11n cards
any other things people can think of that given the information needed could be community deved post it here maybe dell will see the light and let us help with drivers and get this ball moving faster "and maybe make some extra cash on the way"

Love the new XPS M1330 but need more video power
XPS products submitted by md-cyqb
08/11/07
M1330 is really the way to go for a laptop, it's perferct in term of size and design. But it really need better video option. The video card is just not enough powerfull to meet today multimedia requirement. 256m video card is a must on XPS system as they are advertised as ultimate multimedia notebook.
256m M8600 gs or gt for m1330 that would be great. Better screen resolution also and matte finish
And if not possible for the M1330 due to it size, why not offering a mid range XPS with 14" or 15" screen but still light and small like M1330 but with really better video option.

Give the option for a better video card for the XPS 1330 (i.e. nvidia geforce go 8600 GS instead of the 8400) ... the 8400 is kind of lacking.. a lil bit.. its not worth of the XPS brand.

I saw the pics of the upcoming Dell XPS M1730 laptop. I was really disappointed. I was not expecting something so ugly from Dell. By the way you can view the pics on this link: Not for the faint-hearted people. Get ready before you go to this link and for those who have seen it before no need to see them again ;)
http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2859 I
I also saw the M1330 and it look really nice. I think it might save Dell a lot of time and effort if they just made a 17' version of M1330 and call it M1730. Because I want a Santa Rosa XPS 17' laptop soon :)
I think including a 2 Megapixel camera on the M1730 would also be nice and color choice would be appreciated as available for M1330.
Looking forward to your coments.
By the way 'Dell' really appreciate the IdeaStrom.
