64 Bit Vista and more than 4 GB RAM

Desktops, XPS products submitted by dellrox Jul 24

HP has the option for 64 bit Vista and 32 bit Vista, why not Dell? Also, put the option in to XPS 620 desktops for more than 4GB RAM. You do this for Dell Precision Workstations, why not Home Gaming Desktops.

Look into this for me please. 9 Comments »

Offer a Ubuntu based tablet PC

Linux, Laptops submitted by mgrunde Jul 19

I recently purchased an HP tx2500z tablet PC, and I love it. Unfortunately, Vista was the only OS option, and by removing it, I would void my warranty, according to HP. I removed it anyway, and installed Ubuntu on it right away, but not without many problems. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=845911

I hate HP, from their over packaging (see http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/07/18/32-pages-of-paper-in-17-box...) to their horrible customer service (When I requested a refund for Vista, as described in the Vista EULA, my HP case manager Kenneth became extremely angry with me and told me I had voided my warranty by removing Vista).

I never wanted to purchase this tablet from HP, but they were selling exactly what I needed for a reasonable price (1050 USD for Turion x2 2.4GHz, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, etc.) I would gladly pay more for a Dell system with Ubuntu preinstalled. Just take a look at what you can do with a touchscreen and compiz:

What do you say Dell? How about a Puma based, Ubuntu running, tablet PC? 12 Comments »

Non-Glare High Resolution LED Displays

Monitors and Displays, XPS products, Vostro products submitted by anonym Jul 18

Please stop the glossy display nonsence and provide a non-glare display options for all models. If possible with LED backlight, because it is brighter, thinner and less power consuming. I like the XPS M1330 very much, but the glossy display is a real show stopper...

Btw, the glossy finish of the Vostro 1310 case also seems quite pointless to me. 17 Comments »

When you ask for suggestions try responding to them

Dell Community, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Jul 3

This Idea is 2 fold.

First you created a website for customers to submit ideas and hardy ever give feedback. There are currently 14 ideas on the front page that haven't been tagged yet. Dell tells us that you talk about these top ideas 1 - 2 times a week. How hard is it to tag an idea after you talk about it?

Second you post an article on Direct 2 Dell about the new Dell home page and ask for suggestions. I posted a reply yesterday afternoon with links to several Ideas I had posted over the last year on the topic. Not only did I never get a response on any of them on IdeaStorm but they get ignored on Direct 2 Dell as well.

Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo Jul 3

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 13 Comments »

Create the "napkin PC"

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jun 18

"The Napkin PC aims to bring out the creative passion of the user both individually and in group sessions. It encourages spreading out and allows for multiple creative workflows that can interact or just as easily stay independent. It encourages group interaction and collaboration by allowing any number of interfaces that can be passed around or pinned up, but which all communicate with a central network."

Keyboard light

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by ccpljat Jun 19

keyboard light

Dell should make something similar to this light. It is located at the top of the screen and shines down on the keyboard to illuminate it at night. It is activated by a function key combination. 14 Comments »

How about another update on the highest voted ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 19

It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.

No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.

Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would want to offer the best for their customers, no? 57 Comments »

"Dell E" Find a new name for your new computer...

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood Jun 13

Dell's upcoming netbook ultaramobile thing is apparently going to be called the 'Dell E' which sounds like Deli, where you can buy milk, bread and other nice things.

Please think of another name. Have a naming competition on Ideastorm.

I vote for the Dell Lite as in delight!

Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.com

Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 22 **REVIEWED**

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked.

Please make Ubuntu XPS Notebook cheaper than XPS Vista Notebook

Linux, Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by dki May 26

Hi,
I have tested the price of the default Vista-Notebook XPS M1330 (in Germany) and the Ubuntuversion with the same Configuration. The result was amazing :(:

Vistaversion: 909,00 €
Linuxversion: 923,44 €

Is Vista cheaper than Ubuntu?? I can not imagine.

So my wish: Make Ubuntu-Laptops competitive! 23 Comments »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Offer Rugged Pen Based Laptops

Laptops submitted by mharri Mar 7

Dell,

You have recently entered into the rugged laptop market. While I applaud your entry into this market, it would be great to see a pen based rugged system.

In the past my company has purchased Panasonic Toughbooks with digitizers because we need to capture signatures for our particular industry. I am hopeful that we would see pen based rugged systems in the future from Dell.

Panasonic needs to have more competition in this market and Dell is just the competitor that can bring some balance to the market. Continue to work on competitive pricing with regards to this particular market niche. It might just equate to our replacing the entire line of Panasonic Toughbooks with Dell Rugged systems. Thank you and continued success with this line. 1 Comment »
