Dell remove all Browsers from any OS you offer.

Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 06/20/07

Dell no one wants bloatware as can be seen by the plethora of Ideas and votes against bloatware. One which has been left off the list previously is Browsers! Remove all browsers from any OS you offer, its removal also prevents any additional add-on from working so kills two with one un-install. While you're at it get rid of that pesky calculator! Its eating up my disk space.

Dell offer no-OS on all your product line of Desktops/Notebooks/Servers

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by jorge 06/18/07

Dell offer to sell all you possible computers in the Desktop/Notebook/Servers category with a no-OS option. No-OS as in the manufacturing process only connects the hard drive(s) and then makes sure they check in with the BIOS as recognized as in working. This will save you on manufacturing time and cost which can be propagated to the customer. Selling with no-OS will also only give customers buying such systems hardware support and not OS support as they received a system without any OS.

Why sell no-OS systems? Because some (especially big corporations and government agencies) must re-install the OS due to company requirements and security restrictions which prevent the use of any pre-installed OS/software.

External wifi antenna connector

Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by cromo 02/17/07

I came into this idea some time ago. The idea is simple - to put an external wifi connector on the back of the laptop and a button to switch between internal and external antennas. There are loads of different solutions for laptop users that need better signal reception for their wifi cards, most of them simply increase transmitting power (thus exposing us, the users to higher radiation) while all the problems could be easly solved by adding external connector and some some cheap and small external antenna. It would be nice to see such connector on the replicator port, too. Considering the forthcomming WiMax that will be mostly used by ISPs to provide internet connection I am sure such external antenna connector is even a must for the laptops that will come with integrated WiMax card. 6 Comments »

Scanner built to Notebook lid

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by class2008 05/19/07

I think Dell should build a scanner onto the lid of a notebook(s). If someone did not have a scanner with them, on the road for example, or wi-fi hotspot, and needed to scan something, they would have one on their notebook. A scanner does not consist of much, so it would not be hard, and they are not that thick. The largest capacity battery should be included with the notebook at purchase though. What does everyone else think? 15 Comments »

Undroppable Notebook Computers

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by reg 06/20/07

Dell should work with some Physicists to develop Undroppable Notebook Computers. When you let go, they fall toward the Earth, but are stopped from hitting the floor. Every person who thinks of the powers of magnets and gravity realizes that Humans have a poor understanding of some of the most basic forces in the Universe.

Dell can work on perfecting the Unified Field Theory and develop products from their new discoveries. The Heim Theory by Burkhard Heim is a good starting point. But only covers half the story, explaining the existence of all known particles, but not completely how & why those particles interact in the way they do...

Dell can work out it's own Theory of Everything, and greatly improve it's market share with new inventions. 11 Comments »

Simplest Laptop Alarm... Can it be this easy?

Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by kschang 06/27/07

I just thought of something that seems to be so obvious, it's... well... doh. Tell me what's wrong with the idea...

Latest notebooks have Bluetooth, right? (many/most of them anyway).

You need to "pair" Bluetooth with another device, right? Say, your phone?

Bluetooth's range is only, what? 30 ft at most? And that's controllable depending on transmission power, right? Actual effective range is a bit less.

Imagine this: say you pair the Bluetooth in the notebook to your cellphone. The cellphone stays in your pocket.

Someone steals your notebook. When it reaches 15 ft or so from the phone, the weak Bluetooth signal is lost, so the the device is disconnected, pair is interrupted.

ALARM THEN GOES OFF on BOTH the cellphone AND the notebook!

Can it be that easy to implement? Sounds like this is 99% software. WIth up to 128-bit encryption available in Bluetooth, this pairing should be almost impossible to fake. 11 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

BOOOOOO to the new Latitude D430

Latitude products submitted by mcfazeli 06/25/07

I have a post regarding a killer home business / business / ultra-mobile user laptop: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/69655/Create_a_133_Ultraportable_Perfec...< is utterly DISAPPOINTING to see Dell's new D430 be such a low aiming, archaic, unworthy notebook, which should really be called the D420 revision 2.

Dell MUST throw the XPS / m1330 into a Latitude chassis, and put it on sale. My bet is that nobody would buy the D430 if such a laptop existed.

What trash... I for one am VERY disappointed in Dell. 1 Comment »

Incorporate Freefall Detection

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bgamari 06/13/07

Hard drives are by far the most fragile yet frequently the most valuable component of a modern notebook. As such, special care should be taken to mitigate failure where possible. Dell should consider incorporating active freefall protection into its laptop line, especially in business models. An alternative would be to use hard drives with integrated free-fall protection, such as Seagate's 7200.2. 3 Comments »

Engineering/Field Engineering Notebook

Laptops submitted by tletofsky 06/08/07

Every uber geek who has ever been required to go to a service call, or a field installation brings a laptop. About 2/3 of the time, the workstation or server doesn't have a keyboard, monitor, or mouse.

How about a laptop with a built-in KVM.

Yes, it still has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse port external, but with a click of a physical selector switch, and the right cables, the built in screen, keyboard and mousing device connect to the external workstation or server upon which you are working, and TAA-DAA, you have local console access to the OTHER computer. 3 Comments »

Laptop with Numeric Keypad

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by brian78 06/25/07

I think Dell should offer an affordable notebook with a built in numeric keypad. This would be very usefull for people in fields like accounts who use it all the time, and the larger models like the Inspiron 9400 have plenty of space for it. I am in Australia and I could not get one, and there was no USB numeric keypad available as an optional extra. This forces people to look elsewhere. 4 Comments »

Make CD/DVD drive swappable with an extra HD

New Product Ideas submitted by biehl 06/09/07

If the CD/DVD drives uses SATA then it should be a small problem to unplug the CD/DVD drive and plug in some kind of alternative slider which contains an extra hard driver(or solid state drive) which also uses SATA.

That would rock - RAID on even really lightweight laptops! ;o) And the option to have an SSD drive as main drive, and magnetic disk HD as extra drive for storage.

For laptops which already use SATA for the CD/DVD drive you just need to produce the slider... 3 Comments »

No OEM Junk software, revival of recovery DVD/CD's NOT partitions

Desktops, Software submitted by mgin2k3 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

First, I hate it when I buy a computer and right when I turn it on out of the box, it's got a lot of junk software installed (AOL trial, Nortion Anti-Virus trial, etc). Get rid of these trial and non-trial OEM softwares or at least give the customer the option of not having them installed. I end up wasting so much time trying to uninstall all this junk anyways and I'm sure I'm not alone. I like having a clean install when I get a new computer (or when I'm recovering). And by clean I mean Windows (or whatever other OS the user may enjoy) and NOTHING else. Secondary OEM software can be included on a separate disc for the user to select manual installation (or request preinstallation of for new purchase orders).

Secondly, recovery partitions are terrible. Aside from the fact that they waste harddisc space, if the harddrive were to become toast or to be upgraded, not only would the user lose the original installation, but they would also lose the recovery data. Has this single point of failure not come to anyone's attention? CD's and DVD's can be preciously taken care and you never have to worry about losing both the installation and recovery partition all at once.

Dell Offer Computer Systems that are Open for the Customer to tinker with

Dell, Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge 07/30/07

Dell offer computer systems with the needed tools and documentation for the select customers to hack (in a good way) your computers. (don't be offended by the work hack, read on first)

In this day and age its all about the ability for products to be open for users to modify electronic products for their own individual use and sometimes, yes, enjoyment. From the people who re-design an electronic product to their design taste (like a custom case) to re-programming it to do things for their special use and enjoyment.

Some companies are doing this already, Dell can join in and offer the tools and interface boards to allow the select customers the ability to do this as well. This state of openness will only add to Dell support my the computing community.

Note: I'm not saying to give out proprietary information but the ability to allow the user to modify the underlying hardware to their desires. 13 Comments »

Hot plug Batteries changing
(keep SafeSleep few minutes)

Laptop Power submitted by bupta 02/23/07

For people, who travel and bought few laptop batteries :
It's REALLY good to be able to NOT : close all applications and os OR make a full sleep mode on your laptop before your batteries was empty to change it.

A SafeSleep and an instant suspend at the end of batterie during few minutes, to change the actual batterie with a full batterie, and come back on your laptop desktop instantly, could be nice.
And If u were so long to change it, all your RAM is on your hard-disk ^^.

As Apple built it, It could be great for Dell customers to have this technology too.
Thx Dell, and congratz for this IdeaStorm, continue ! Sorry for my bad english. Comment »

Coat Notebooks in ENDURA Matte Black Foam Rubber

New Product Ideas submitted by reg 06/12/07

Toughbooks and other 'Hardened' laptops come with a rugged, durable foam rubber coating.

Dell should partner with a materials supplier company to come out with a line of 'Rugged DELLs' - Built with a little more extra cost, but tested to survive twice the fall, heat, cold, etc - that a regular laptop would survive. With plastic seal keyboard and waterproof surfaces.

A lot of work environments are very hard on 'standard' equipment, so DELL - do Better.

Make a Rugged Notebook that can stand up to a construction environment. 16 Comments »

All Dell Laptops should come with metal hinges

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by rajesh_rs 05/24/07

I have noticed that the Dell laptops are not as rugged as Lenovo or IBM Thinkpad. I would love to buy a Dell laptop which has metallic hinges which can hold firm and not vibrate when I am typing or moving my laptop around. 4 Comments »
