Notebook Shells Are Plastic - Offer Metal Casings Too

Laptops submitted by googideas 02/17/07

Notebooks get carried everywhere. Shouldn't Dell offer an aluminum or otherwise metal casing/construction as an option?

If I am going to drop two grand on a laptop, which I just did, I sure as heck want it as rugged as possible. I don't care about weight or additional cost. I want it to last.

Plastic is brittle. A dent in the metal is better than a crack in the plastic. It's also easier to recycle.

What do you think? 33 Comments »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

The Clutter Is Forming: We Need A Moderator

Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by googideas 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Approximately 48 hours into its life, and Ideastorm is filling up with repetition and senseless comments. Since moderation cannot be exercised by the participants a moderator a la Dell Employee must put up her hand. Or his hand. We aren't picky!

One: Repeating the same ideas from earlier posts is a pain to the reader and a waste of space and time. These should be removed.

Two: Suggestions which are without applicability to the issues at hand should be removed: one post states that "Dell should set up Dell Pay to compete with Paypal." Sigh. Why?

For what unique purpose? Dell's business is not online payments, in the same way Apple's is not selling music (they sell music at a loss to sell iPods at a gain). There is no benefit to Dell and it meets no need.

Since this format is experimental and fully funded by Dell, I encourage Dell to cut the wheat from the chafe and remove as much as they see fit. For all of the "I have rights" and "freedom of speech" advocates, you don't. This is a place where the good keep going and the bad go out.

The less posts the better. It provides Dell what they want: the opportunity to test strong ideas properly. Without the removal of clutter, the good ideas will by dint of the time they are posted (e.g. 3am) and the increasing volume of posts, inevitably suffer at times the forest's size despite the grandeur of the tree in question.

I may be going against the grain of popular opinion, but you add your vote to this post if you believe in the goal of this site, and not the freedom it offers to utter the first inane thing which comes to mind.

Student Discounts!

Education, Sales Strategies submitted by cnmopt 02/18/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Similar to Apple, Dell should offer students a special discount on Dell Products. The Apple market share is currently growing in the education sector and offering [college] students a discount would be useful to counter Apple's strategy. 42 Comments »

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.

Why not give the persons who posted the most popular ideas, put into action at Dell, a free Dell computer of their choice?

focus your efforts

Desktops and Laptops submitted by kob83 05/01/07

make less configs for laptops, desktops etc
lets say, 4 or 3 configurations of laptops/notebooks and 3 for the desktop
focus on 3 levels -
cheap, normal, expensive
3 laptops each each predefined, to each a different price
allow upgrade options but only the best quality and not for every part, just the most often upgraded- memory graphics card etc'.
use only the best hardware, that is known to work 10000%
have it all configured, ready to run, so you just have to get it out of the box and start using.. without having to uninstall anything or download codecs/drivers for anything, by focusing on only the best hardware, and giving less optins this will be easier.

make a unique design, that will be different from the rest.
it should be quiet, fit in any room, sticker/junk free,

a better logo for dell, choose an animal or a fruit or whatever comes to mind (dont you have people that are hired to do that?) 1 Comment »

System Security - Fingerprint Scanners

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by guardianxps 02/17/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

I would like to see computers have some new technology added like Fingerprint scanners. Stolen computers are an issue and adding this will create a better level of security. The only downside I can see would be if one person sold the computer to another and didnt reset the scanner.

Still, I would like to see this and I am sure others would too.

Improve Inspiron quality

Inspiron products submitted by edovia 04/20/07

I have an Inspiron 6000 that blew up only a few weeks after the warranty was over. The design is bad and causes the CPU to overheat and give up. And I'm not the only one!

There is a class action going up here in Canada but does not include model 6000... yet!

So much for a 2000$ CAD computer... Pigs will fly before Dell sees my money again!

Thank you, Dell! 9 Comments »

All I wanted was a computer

Service and Support submitted by ncaros 04/20/07

All I wanted was a laptop computer:

I researched for days and decided I needed a Windows XP laptop. Duo 2 core was a start. Dell was my first choice, but new laptops didn't include XP anymore, just Vista. I found one in the outlet...A Latitude 15.4 inch with 1 gigabyte of RAM, an SATA hard drive and preloaded with Office Professional. I have a Dell Credit account, so I tried to order it....only to have the Dell site tell me 3 different times in 2 days that it couldn't verify my account. So I decided to call the 1-800 number for Dell outlet and waited over 30minutes on 2 separate occassions but no one picked up. I then called the build your own Dell new PC 1-800 and immediately spoke with a representative, who informed me that I was not eligible to purchase a Latitude because I wasn't in a business and he could only sell me a personal laptop with Vista. I would have to pay extra for the Windows XP disc and would have to install it myself. He did not help me get back to the Outlet and wouldn't sell me a new Latitude. The next day, I again tried through the Dell outlet to order the Latitude I had found, but it was gone. I found another and tried to buy it using my Dell credit card and it wouldn't accept my order again..."We cannot temporarily access your account information. Please try again later". I then decided to reapply for a Dell credit account....filled in all of the information, including my email address and submitted the information. 8 days later, I have still not received a response from the Dell Finance regarding my account. Mind you....I make a decent living and could have paid cash for the machine, but wanted 90 days same as cash. 8 days later....still nothing.

I went to NewEgg, bought a HP laptop business model in 10 minutes, loaded with Windows XP and had it delivered in 3 days.

All I wanted to do was buy a business Laptop. 1 Comment »

Windows Live OneCare

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by class2008 04/20/07

Offer Windows Live OneCare as an anti-virus option. It is a great program, and easy to use. I have it on my Dell Inspiron 6400 and 1150 and love it. 6 Comments »

Simplify Customization

Sales Strategies submitted by sparky81884 04/20/07

Simplify the ordering process. Basically, Dell now has too many product lines and variations of its basic computers. It gets really confusing to figure out what base model to pick. Cut back to just one model for each form factor (slim pc, mini tower, full tower, etc) and offer every option in the customization process. let people just see everything. Comment »

Better search options on the Dell Outlet site.

Dell Web Site submitted by tgmaniac 04/20/07

I would like to be able to search for a system on the dell outlet easily. For example - put in a minimum processor speed or search for a specific wireless card on laptops or a minimum number of cores in the processor. Also I would like to see more details about the servers like how many processors the server comes with. 5 Comments »

High DPI 24-inch monitor

Monitors and Displays submitted by st_0_0_0 04/20/07

How about a 24-inch LCD with 2560x1600 resolution? I love the size of the current 2407, but the 100 dpi seems a little too low-res. 9 Comments »

Laptop hard drive speed

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by drl 04/20/07

The laptops need 7200rpm hard drive options. After my 5400rpm OEM HD failed I replaced with it with a current model 7200rpm drive. It used .5 watt less power than the OEM and noticeably added some snap and pop to the feel of the machine. My use is business and the laptop gets flogged all the time. 3 Comments »

Why cant Dell price consistently?

Sales Strategies submitted by larrykalpakoff 04/19/07

I work at a government agency which dictates price based on low cost. I cant buy it if it isnt the lowest price on your website. So I go onto the small business site and I get a price of lets say $500 for a 24 inch monitor. Then I go the CMAS contract price for the STate of California and it quotes me $700. I cant pay this price because of my local governments board of directors policy. Thats that.

But if I buy from the small business site my order gets cancelled because of my address, its flagged as government.

So we buy HP. For everything and I dont like that. But as long as Dell doesnt care about saving government agencies money all my servers and workstations will be HP because I'm forced by a policy.

And no Dell I dont want to call your nasty phone tree and go thru price matching. Which works sometimes. I dont want to waste my time on a call. 11 Comments »
