Make keyboard color customizable

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products submitted by wing044 08/23/07

Let customers choose their keyboard color. Such as choosing black keyboards in Vostro laptops to the silver ones in Inspirons. This also make my laptop more unique. Now Inspirons are available in 8 colors, if keyboard color is customizable, it will become 16 different combinations. It's not difficult to do at all since the keyboards are interchangable. 5 Comments »

Memory / accessory prices are way too high

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by jdurban 02/20/07

Charging full MSRP for memory and accessories is counter-intuitive. Lower prices and increase sales. There's far too many discounters out there to be paying full retail for cheap commodity items like memory and accessories!

PCI Card Cage for Dell Precision 690 Workstation upgrades

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Precision Workstations submitted by ai5u 09/11/07

The Dell Precision 690 is defintely an outstandting workstation but I have ran into an unusual situation in trying to upgrade my system in which Dell may not have thought about for those like me who wish to upgarde their systems. My base workstation is the 1Kw power supply option with the single video card. I have purchased the Pci-e duel video riser card upgrade and the duel video card fan as with two upgradeable Nvidia Quadro FX 3450 video cards from Dell with no problem. As I was in the process of upgrading my workstation, I noticed that my PCI card cage that is attached to the back center of the chassis would not accommadate my new two video cards with my new riser board. I thought, "I'll give Dell Spare Parts a call since I did not see this upgradeable item on the parts website". Dell Parts said "that this special split-level PCI card cage is only available with 690 workstations with duel video cards purchased at time of assembly from the factory". As I bit my tonge, I thought - "Why in the world would Dell promote this workstation as scaleable and upgradeable but not offer one part that would stop anybody in there tracks trying to upgrade their system!?" I have searched all over the internet for the possibility of finding one of these "split-level PCI card cages" for a Dell 690 Workstation upgrade and have had no luck at all finding one. There is a Dell Part number for one of these that I found out from a undisclosed source. It is Dell P/N KF255. But I cannot obtain one from Dell at all! Please Dell make this "split-level" PCI Card cage option available as a spare part and available to the public for those of us who wish to upgrade to the duel video card option!

Sincerely,

Scanners for Linux

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by jinxed 06/19/07

For years I've been frustrated with scanner support and compatibility in Linux. There is a project that provides drivers for many scanners, but many of the drivers are outdated and many of the better scanners are not supported.

It would be great if Dell could partner with Canon or Epson (or someone else) to provide robust scanning solutions for Linux users. By robust, I mean that the scanner should be full-featured; including film trays, high resolution color scanning, and possibly even software to work with scanned images (ie- document management)..

The scanners should be current (read New) scanners with preferably open source drivers that will work with SANE.

For now, I will have to continue to boot to Windows just to use my unsupported scanner. 10 Comments »

Dell offer an optional key to the windows key for users who don't use it.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by jorge 06/13/07

Dell offer your customers an optional key to be installed by them to replace the Windows key if they do not use it or desire it to be on their keyboards.
A few optional keys could be a Ubuntu key that does nothing as Ubuntu does not use that key, guess it could be programmed.
A FreeDOS key? Again useless.
A Dell logo key, for bragging.
A Mac Key (you know the funny loopy thing) for reg.
An image of Micheal Dell, for the true believers.
A StormTrooper image, for the Troopers.
And finally a blank key for those who can't decide. 4 Comments »

Dell: Transform the business card - mag stripe, RFID?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, New Product Ideas submitted by phubert 06/27/07 **NOT NOW**

*

  • For personal contact, REPLACE the current business card with one that was mag stripe and/or RFID capable.

  • provide USB-attached (dual?) mag-stripe/RFID reader/writer devices for ALL PCs SOLD, along with read/write software.

  • For all NEW machines, INTEGRATE this into the keyboard.

  • For OLD machines, provide an external, USB-attached device.

  • Dell could also sell the business cards!

  • Provide hardware/software for Windows-Mac-Linux

Advantage? Rather than trust your _contact_ to properly key the url printed on your business card, have it _automatically read_ from your BUSINESS CARD.

Could this be expanded beyond this simple function?

Any thoughts?? 22 Comments »

Dell Sell Headphone/Mic extension cables or a semi dock for them

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge 07/25/07

Dell Sell Headphone/Mic extension cables or a semi dock for them. Users want an easily accessible way of connecting their headphones without having to show their plumbers crack at the rest of their officemates or ogglers. Selling this as an option would greatly aid Dell's customer base from having to reach around behind or below their computer or desk to connect their headphone/mic/headsets, because most customers have their own private headphones which they use with other devices and they don't want to leave it behind (yea, I don't get that either, why not buy two?)

Anyway, an options to make some more cash for Dell and keep me from sending people to RadioShack for the extension cable, not to mentions yelling at users who keep twisting the computer sideways and jacking up the cables. 1 Comment »

Dell Sell Flash Memory that is Ready Boost Compatible

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Servers and Storage submitted by jorge 07/25/07

Dell sell flash memory that is ReadyBoost compatible. Test it on your own laptops and desktops to verify it and add the resulting memory speeds to the product information page so customers know it is a viable product for ReadyBoost!

If you're going to sell Vista, at least make sure to sell its needed accessories for improved performance (it needs it).

[Note: Sorry Ubuntu but luckily we don't need that do we!] 25 Comments »

Offer the Dvorak Keyboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 04/11/07

The Dvorak keyboard is an ergonomic alternative to the layout commonly found on typewriters and computers known as "Qwerty". The Qwerty keyboard was designed in the 1870s to accommodate the slow mechanical movement of early typewriters. When it was designed, touch typing literally hadn't even been thought of yet! It's hardly an efficient design for today's use. By contrast, the Dvorak (pronounced "duh-VOR-ack", not like the Czech composer!) keyboard was designed with emphasis on typist comfort, high productivity and ease of learning -- it's much easier to learn! There were several variations in the Dvorak's design in its first few decades, but these were settled when the American National Standards Institute approved a standard for the layout of the Dvorak in 1982. The diagram above shows the standard layout as adapted for PC use. 13 Comments »

Unleash the full potential of Linux's multi-user capabilities: Ubuntu + Ndiyo's Hubster

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by limulus 08/02/07

When you think of a Windows machine, generally speaking, its a box connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, which one user uses at a time. Dell's Desktop Ubuntu machines are currently shipped the same way.

But Ubuntu is Linux and so has the potential for many users to use the same computer at the same time, as is done with a server.

Imagine if you will being able to buy a single computer and everyone in the house can use it at the same time; no more fighting over who gets to use it when or who gets stuck using the old computer if there is another one. This is the exciting potential of Ndiyo's Hubster.

"Hubster is the first ultra-thin-client terminal with completely user-configurable hardware"

* plug a USB hub into your computer
* plug the Hubster, a USB keyboard and mouse into the hub
* plug a monitor into the Hubster

and you have a Terminal that behaves just as if it were its own computer. Repeat the process for a second Terminal, etc.

Some new monitors will even have the hub built right in to make it that much easier.

Watch the demo video on their page and be as awe-struck as I was :-)

AFAIK, there is nothing currently like this offered by any major OEM; if Dell were to get it to market I'm sure many families would want one! 18 Comments »

Mini built in Space for storage of important drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by visiocloud 10/04/07

Okay, this may be a dumb Idea, IDK but it's worth a shot

Make a mini hard drive on all computers you send out, something that can not be formatted by the user: also make it not too big to entice the user to try and use it for somethign else:

When I got my laptop I automatically cleared out the slur of redundant partitions on my hard drive and merged them all into one because I bought my hard drive size because I wanted that much memory, not because I wanted it to be wasted. I still wish there was a small partition built into the system that stayed with the system, something to store drivers during formats or keep the drivers close to the computer (my family and I swap hard drives from computer to computer often, it'd be nice if something stayed with the computer at all times)

Basically something that is seperate from my hard drive size. 4 Comments »
