Dell Mini Inspiron

Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by lukemcurley May 28

Just read on Gizmodo, the new Dell Mini Inspiron looks very nice indeed. (http://gizmodo.com/393815/exclusive-dell-mini-inspiron-their-first-mini-laptop)

My only concern, as I have with all Dell laptops, it has only a crummy VGA port, no DVI or HDMI. I cannot understand this, VGA is dead and has been dead for about four years now.

Other than that it looks very slick, nice keyboard, 3 usb ports, memory card reader, vga and ethernet.

Look forward to the Mini release, but without DVI or HDMI will have to wait until Dell decides that this is an issue for many buyers. 33 Comments »

Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini Inspiron

Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad. 82 Comments »

E Series Notebooks - Dell logo

Latitude products submitted by dionne May 29

I have seen the new Latitude E Series and am very disappointed that the Dell logo has changed. This takes away the Dell identity and makes it like any other notebook. Please please reconsider and bring back the round Dell logo that we all love!!!!!! 1 Comment »

Boycott Windows 7

Operating Systems submitted by aikiwolfie May 29

Windows 7 is apparently going to come with quite a sting in the wallet for consumers. A while back Microsoft floated the idea of a subscription software service you pay for every time you use it. And most of these "services" are already offered pre-installed or for free like Office or Hotmail.

If the rumors are true it's going to hit home with the release of Windows 7.

Microsoft Wants You to Pay Monthly Subscription for Office and Services You Won't Use

Windows 7 and Windows Live to Have Even More Forced Integration

Oh! And Windows 7 as i expected will basically be Vista. It will use essentially the same kernel instead of the expected cut down, bloat free MinWin and the same driver model. So Microsoft still hasn't learned the lesson not to cut corners with OS development.
Windows 7 Will Have Same Foundation as Vista, Be Mostly Secret Until Launch

How could Dell possibly justify offering this ridiculous monstrosity to it's customers? Surely we deserve better treatment than this?

At the very least give us a real choice of OS should Microsofts plans come to fruition. 51 Comments »

LED Backlit Displays for Higher Resolutions for XPS M1530

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by whitefrost May 14

The release of the LED backlit 1440 x 900 display is great, but needs to be expanded to higher resolutions most notably the 1680 x 1050 resolution which a large number of people use and are most comfortable with. It would not be a threat to the M1730 as you can keep the LED Full HD 1920 x 1200 for it alone. 6 Comments »

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by siger May 19

when there is a problem with the Master Boot Record the ISO can't repair it and we have to go to a reparation company.

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 244 Comments »

Use magsafe power connectors

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by badblood 05/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

Use Latitude keyboard layout in Vostro laptops (standard Ins/Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDown position)

Inspiron products, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by donut May 17

Latitude laptops have a pretty nice key layout.

I think Vostro laptops, which are also business-oriented, should either use the exact same keyboard as Latitudes, or at least the same layout. The Vostro keyboard has several deficiencies compared with the Latitude ones.

For example the Latitude D830 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/lat_d830.jpg
(Warning: very large picture. If anyone has the URL for a picture with a more head-on view of the keyboard, please post here.)

The Ins, Del, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys are in the same 3x2 layout as a standard desktop PC keyboard, at the top right of the keyboard. So it will be easy to adapt between using a desktop keyboard and the laptop one.

Also, the right part of Caps Lock is recessed to reduce the chance of accidentally pressing it, and the cursor keys are the same size as letter keys. (It's not perfect though; who knows why the Windows menu key is at the top rather than to the right of the space bar?)

By comparison, see the Vostro 1710 keyboard here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/imagebank/notebooks/vostro_171...
(Warning: another large picture)

Those six keys are in non-standard positions, in particular the PgUp, PgDown, Home and End keys are all on the bottom row underneath the numeric keypad. The Caps Lock key is not recessed, and the cursor keys are smaller than normal. (At least the Windows menu key is in the right place!) 2 Comments »

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by ward733 May 21

Though the vostro systems are designed for the small to medium buisness user, they also have a good home market as well.. If you have even a likeing for an all black system its no where to be found at the Home site.. I guess if even they were available in even the outlet would be a help.. Comment »

Remove any reference to Vista from the "Still looking for Windows XP?" page

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by drewness May 21

When the "still looking for Windows XP?" link on Dell.com is clicked, one is subjected to an obvious pitch for Vista. Get rid of any reference to Vista from this page! It's a no-brainer! 1 Comment »

use open firmware on all systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by dgilmore May 21

Rather than using a closed bios that is limited in functionality. Use open firmware http://www.openfirmware.org/ on all systems. it gives greater flexibility and will allow dell to provide open source solutions from top to bottom. 3 Comments »

HDMI/DVI input on HD laptops.

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by impulse May 10

It's great that Dell offers HDMI and DVI-D outputs on their XPS laptops, but is it possible to add HDMI and DVI inputs as well?

For those that already have a Blu-ray player or Playstation 3, it kind of stinks that we can't take advantage of the 1080p capable screens that Dell offers on the M1530 and M1730.

I think being able to use the HD screen available on at least the M1730 as a monitor for consoles or Blu-ray players would be a great idea, as it would save people such as myself from having to buy an external monitor or new TV. 6 Comments »

Give Open Source Software a Higher profile On Dell.com

Dell Web Site submitted by aikiwolfie May 22 **REVIEWED**

From InformationWeek.com : Open Source Quality Improving, But Development Assumptions Need Revising

This report confirms what open source supporters have known all along. Open source developers deliver very high quality code. As such Dell should be giving the open source developers it uses a higher profile on Dell.com instead of hiding them away in some dark recess out of the way!

At the very least give your own in-house open source developers more exposure! They deserve it after all the top quality code they've produced, tested and tweaked.

Reduce height of XPS Towers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by memsley May 22

Hi,
I have a desk with a CPU cabinet that can fit a computer 17.75" high. I want to buy a powerful computer for photo processing/gaming and I love the XPS420, but unfortunately it is 18" high and can't fit in the desk. Please make some computers that are just as powerful but a little smaller then your high end XPS lines.

Thanks,
Matt 4 Comments »
