Dual boot Windows and Linux

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by randomperson 06/19/07

Everytime I get a new laptop or desktop, I usually resize my partitions so I can dual boot windows and linux. Ubuntu is a great OS for people to start learning linux. This way you have the best of both worlds. Users would not have to worry about their software being compatible with their OS. I do not know any other company that offers this and would make Dell stand out as doing something different. 6 Comments »

Linux on Tablet PC's

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by daniel117 06/29/07 **REVIEWED**

Since Dell is putting Ubuntu on their notebooks and a desktop computer, I figured out that they can put it on their tablet pc's as well.

Put A DELL Direct store right next to all the APPLE stores!

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by reg 06/27/07

Apple spent millions finding Retail Locations that generate large volume traffic and sell lots and lots of Mac stuff..

So, save money - where ever an Apple Retail store is located, put a DELL Direct store right beside it.

Have Apple trade in days so people can trade in their old G3 / G4 / G5 macs and get a real Intel machine that runs all versions of Linux and Windows, without any problems.

Where Ever Apple goes - be there to take their customers with low prices and better service. 10 Comments »

More physical switches on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by badblood 06/26/07

Please include on laptops and desktops additional physical switches to adjust or turn on and off:

-Volume
-Screen brightness; and turn on/off screen
-Webcam
-Microphone
-LAN
-External drives/media

Not electronic buttons that don't work when the HD the is booting or doing something else annoying- but physical switches that you can turn off anytime and that override the system.....

Thanks. 3 Comments »

How about limiting user name length?

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 06/24/07

Yeah right, jorge_is_my_hero_he_is_so_cool_and_smart_i_think_he-should_be_president is a funny guy. Still, his name is too long.

How about limiting user names to 20 characters (or maybe even less)?

Come on, you bloody like this idea! 4 Comments »

RSS feed for Dell Coupons and Deals

Dell Web Site submitted by leepmon 06/28/07

Post all coupons for all segments to a single page on dell.com and publish it out as an RSS feed. The coupons will be posted online anyways, so why not centralize them. Comment »

Dell true mini-sized desktop

Desktops submitted by jerbl 02/17/07

I suggest that Dell design and sell a true mini-sized desktop CPU.
It would be similiar in size, weight and power to the Apple Mac Mini, but with Windows software.
Customers who buy a LCD or Plasma TV also prefer a CPU with a small footprint. 34 Comments »

This is exactly the form factor I want in a home PC:

Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz 06/30/07

This is exactly the form factor I want in a PC for most rooms (my living room, my home office, terminals for all the non-computer intensive users at work). It's fanless, and takes no unnecessary space in a room since it fits totally in (yes, in) the wall socket..

http://parthsuthar.com/derive/2007/06/20/a-computer-so-small-it-fits-in-a-wal...
http://www.jadeintegration.com/prinfo.php?i=efi6700

U.K. firm Jade Integration has unveiled a computer so small, it fits into a wall socket and is powered via Ethernet. The Jack PC, a rival to the smallest PC in the world, can hook up to a standard monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and runs Windows CE, the stripped-down version of Windows often used in portable devices. It comes with up to 64 MB of flash memory and 128 megs of RAM, so don't expect to play Half-Life 2 on it, but it should be able to handle basic Internet functions decently.

With my home directory (and media files, etc) on file server in my garage anyway - and at work all compute intensive stuff is done on servers anyway, I don't need hard disks or fans or large boxes in most of the computers I use.

It seems for everything except laptops (which need to be self contained) and gaming machines (where obviously you need bigger chips, more memories, and big graphics cards) I think this form factor computer would meet most needs.

Update: Better information from the company that makes it here: http://www.jadeintegration.com/prinfo.php?i=efi6700 10 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Touchscreen Desktop

Dell should create a monitor/desktop with a touchscreen interface that responds well and is relatively cheap. 4 Comments »

Linux pre-installed on hi-end laptops like XPS

Why do you only offer low-end Inspiron? We want hi-end hardware with pre-installed Ubuntu Linux, OpenOffice and Firefox and not just in the US! 1 Comment »

It would be nice if dell could provide an approximate weight that updated whenever you chose a different component. Important for laptops. 5 Comments »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

Additional cosmetic customization options for Inspiron and XPS notebooks.

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by benjesuit 06/24/07

Color panels on the lid is a good start. But one would only get to enjoy that when the lid is down - which isn't often.

Therefore, I propose a range of additional cosmetics choices:

1. Choice of LCD screen bezel surround: (same range of colors for the lid)
2. Choice of Keyboard color (Black, Silver, Gray, White)
3. Choice of Touchpad/button color (same range as keyboard colors)
4. Choice of Keyboard surround color (Same range as lid colors)
5. Choice of LED panel light colors using colored inserts (Blue, cyan, red, green, yellow.) 9 Comments »

Dell, don't charge extra $20 [edit: $50] for a different color notebook

Inspiron products, Sales Strategies submitted by iv2101 06/28/07

It's great that more colors are available, but customers are currently charged extra on Inspiron 1420 and 1420N for colors other than black.
Vote for color equality!

[edit: this price difference went up to 50 bucks now!] 4 Comments »

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit 06/21/07

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.

With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...

Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...

The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.

Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*

Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o

* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi. 11 Comments »

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.
