Compact Flourescent Light Bulb with every PC, Printer or Monitor

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Printers and Ink, Desktops and Laptops submitted by urbanvoyeur 03/05/07

Ship one CFL bulb (60 or 75 w equivalent) with every significant order (PC, laptop, monitor, printer). Millions of kilowatts could be saved.

Team up with a major retailer if necessary, to do it.

Then encourage people to let you know when they've installed it - maybe even make a small donation (50 cents?) to a charity in their name when they do.

This could have a bigger impact that the plant a tree / carbon neutral campaign. 1 Comment »

Install Novell Suse

Linux, Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by x684867 03/19/07

Dell should offer customers the choice of Windows or Linux. Specifically Dell should offer Novell Suse Linux with technical support.

In the interest of its customer base, Dell could consider offering its existing customers the opportunity (for a fee) of upgrading their existing computers to Novell Suse Linux with a support option.

Novell has given its Suse Linux a great set of features which rival Windows Vista or Mac OS X. This includes a graphics interface with translucent windows...running with 512MB or less.

For years Dell has lost face with me and my customers because of quality issues. The inability to buy a reliable, linux-based system has lead me to consider other options. I am now encouraged to see Dell's consideration of the Linux option.

Disable repeating categories.

When editing an article, the category is de-selected. If you re-select the category, the category is repeated. Comment »

Bring back CRT monitors as an option

Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies submitted by gadump 04/22/07

Please bring back the option of buying CRT monitors with high-end desktops. Preferably 21' or better. I know most buyers want flatscreens, but they're not right for everybody. Call it a premium item if you like and charge accordingly, I just want the choice. 23 Comments »

Thin client

Servers and Storage, Software submitted by gordona 04/24/07

The time for a thin client offering for home users has arrived. DELL could lead the revolution.
The average home user is completly overwhelmed by the impossible task of maintaining a safe responsive software environment and refuses to become a systems adminstrator. Many just give up and don't use their machines much. DELL should develop and offer a subscription model whereby the hardware (thin client) could be "refreshed" over a broadband connection, at the push of a button on the client machine, or whenever the server "senses" that something has drifted off-spec. All client data and applications would reside on the server with any time-sensitive application being downloaded to run locally.

The big rule to be followed is that the entire software/data environment can be recreated easily. The end user wouldn't worry about viruses, disk crashes, device drivers, software install procedures or operating system screw ups. Once the word got out, people would wonder why anyone had eve used the "fat client" approach that we're all stuck with today.

It's time for DELL to make a bold move (you did it once before). 6 Comments »

Dell + Arbor Day Society Partnership: Free Trees

Environment submitted by reg 05/04/07

Option on every Dell machine (purely an option): Join Arbor Day Society - Receive 10 baby trees.

DIRECTLY REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT BY HAVING YOUR CUSTOMERS PLANT TREES!

Dell's Arbor Day Partnership would make 'Apple' efforts seem weak. You think with a name like Apple, they would offer free Apple trees in the Apple Retail stores! 22 Comments »

Commercial software library for Dell's Ubuntu

Linux, Software submitted by sorkkarauta 05/05/07

Establish a software repository for commercial Ubuntu software. It would be a new distribution channel and innovative way to sell software.

In this case all new Ubuntu PC's would have limited access to download commercial software (eg. games, tools, productivity sofware etc.). It would be good way to gain incomes by selling centralized distribution channel for commercial software developers and it is also supportive function for sales.

I am pretty sure that it is very difficult find a place for Ubuntu commercial software in stores. But this problem can be avoided if Dell is able to provide software distribution channel for customers.

Make laptop lid lockable

Laptops submitted by badblood 05/06/07

Put a physical lock on the laptop lid, with a key. I've never seen that before, and it beats a screen lock any day. Could be a theft deterant too. I mean why steel it if you can't open it....

An open solution to categorization

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/08/07

This was originally posted on May 8. Lots of people were saying IdeaStorm was cluttered, and that spam and duplicates were appearing, that we needed better categories and a search engine that returns better results, and that it was taking too long to get bug fixes and improvements.

I built a new system, a mirror of every idea on the site, to try and sort it out myself, and to demonstrate to Dell that when everybody is complaining, improvements should happen in days, not months.

It has a better search engine than IdeaStorm, and the ability to browse ideas based on the Dell-assigned tags. As well as demonstrating good potential features for IdeaStorm, it should prove useful as it is.

The link:» » New IdeaStorm Categorizer « «

Initially I was trying to get people to help sort the ideas into categories, but I'm considering adding a robot to sort the rest of them out automatically. Thanks very much to people who helped categorize ideas!

Stop with the special purpose discounts - give everyone the same good price --- or, list all the available discounts to see if I qualify..

Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 05/09/07

Rather than subsidize one group at the expense of others, I'd rather see fair and low pricing across all customers (and that means the same price for Home and Small Business and Government and Large Business as well as Students and Firement and Homeless and Toddlers).

You offer student discounts: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62128/Student_Discounts
Why Students as opposed to
Fireman Discounts (if you were thinking benefit to society) or
Unemployed Discounts (if you were thinking difficulty paying) or
Toddler Discounts (if you were thinking 'get them hooked young').
CEO Discounts (if you were thinking get them in the hands of future decision makers)

You offer discounts on personal systems for Federal government employees:
http://www.dell.com/content/segmenter.aspx/fedva?c=us&cs=_16&l=en&s=fed&~
"Discounts on personal systems for Federal Government employees."

You offer DOE pricing that's better than GSA pricing:
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/comp/hardware/dell-discount-price.html< offer discounts to families of employees
http://tinyurl.com/2bz5f9
"Discounts on Dell Products – receive discounts for you and your family"

You refund MS Vista for some customers but not others
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/65334
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66143< these discounts could make me feel like a sucker paying full price subsidizing the others.

Ideally, I'd like to see fair pricing for everyone. But yeah, I realize some of these are under large volume contracts - so if you can't do the same price for everyone -- could you please list on a single web page all the various discount & refund programs you offer so I can see which ones I might qualify for. 5 Comments »

Supply alternative to windows key.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by pschulz01 05/16/07

If DELL can't provide keyboards with alternatives to the 'MS Windows' (and now 'MS Vista') keys that appear on DELL keyboards, it should be possible for end customers to buy replacement keys and replace them themselves (or at a service center/shop).

I am not running ANY Microsoft products, so I don't see why I should be promoting their company on my laptop(s).

It must be possible, as I have now purchased two identical 'DELL PRECISION M65's, both with Vista pre-installed. The first one had a MS Windows style key, the second had the MS Vista style key.

Reviews

Inspiron products submitted by aschreiber36 06/22/07

Here's an idea......How about showing reviews of the Inspiron 1501 that have the specs that you actually offer. Many of the reviews show the Processor as some sort of Intel Dual Core and after speaking to a Rep, I discovered the 1501 does not even have the option for an Intel processor (Dual Core or otherwise). Just my two cents. 1 Comment »

Dell - Tell us if this explains why it's so hard to get No OS on many Dell models?

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 07/10/07

The Idea is that if there's a reason like this that Dell won't offer No OS on more systems, they should just come out and say

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Comes_vs_Microsoft_Petition_Shows_How_Microsoft_Bl...<

...in 2000, Microsoft ratcheted the restriction up so that OEMs are forced to forfeit all discounts otherwise earned if they ship any "naked machines" to consumers. This heightened restriction, which (on information and belief) continues to the present, prohibits PC users and PC retailers from buying and installing lower priced or better quality operating systems of their choice."
