SOHO Storage

Servers and Storage submitted by kumaraprasan 05/28/07

I feel that the market is mature for DELL to introduce a SOHO NAS based on open source NAS software from freenas.org on a 4 bay tower platform powered by the intel XScalar or AMCC processors, there are lot of 2nd and 3rd tier vendors already offering it, with DELL scale of capability, customers can benefit.

With WiFi support built in a home solution is the way to go with most of the house holds buying a lot of USB HDDs and flash drives to store their photo's home videos there is a huge potential for DELL to standardize this segment with offerings that would be a boon to small office home office users. Have publicly available torrents/ISOs of all driver and media discs

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by remover 06/15/07 **NOT NOW**

As a former dell technician and now computer repair shop technician, I frequently encounter Dell machines where there driver disc is missing and or out of date. Having worked on the phones I know it's not cheap for Dell to keep these in stock and to keep shipping them out.

My suggestion: use a free peer to peer download system to distribute these discs. BitTorrent. It's free and simple to set up. Along side the torrents you could have ISOs ready for download if the person is unfamiliar with BitTorrent.

While the most common consumer may not be able to utilize it to full effectiveness, it gives local technicians and either knowledgeable users or friends of the less-than-knowledgeable users will have access to the most up to date disk images.

Just my two cents.

Dell true mini-sized desktop

Desktops submitted by jerbl 02/17/07

I suggest that Dell design and sell a true mini-sized desktop CPU.
It would be similiar in size, weight and power to the Apple Mac Mini, but with Windows software.
Customers who buy a LCD or Plasma TV also prefer a CPU with a small footprint. 34 Comments »

Should Apple licence OS X to Dell? | Bigmouth Strikes Again - Freelance journalist Gary Marshall on technology, the Internet, music, Macs and more

Operating Systems submitted by pwalker 01/30/07

There was an interesting op-ed by Doug Mohney in The Inquirer yesterday, which suggested that the launch of Vista provides a good opportunity for Apple - if it licences OS X to Dell.

However, Vista is being beaten like a dead horse by the mass media – most of them already are enthralled to the God of Jobs if you read between the lines, so Microsoft could make nuclear fusion work tomorrow and they’d give it a lukewarm review at best. The consensus view out of the babbling punditry is “Don’t buy Vista today, unless you have to buy a new computer tomorrow.”

On that front, I think the babbling pundits are right. Heh.

So what about Apple?

If Apple was serious, and I mean really serious, about gaining more PC market share, they’d realize they need to license/sell their operating system to another hardware manufacturer or two. Sure, Apple’s tried the license route before with mixed results, but it’s about time to bite the bullet, look into the mirror, and realize they should try something bold.

Apple should license their operating system to Dell.

Mohney isn’t suggesting that Apple should make OS X available to any PC user; the dangers of that (such as hardware incompatibilities or really crap machines ruining Apple’s reputation) have been talked to death for years. Rather, he’s suggesting that Apple could team up with a single PC manufacturing firm to make decent clones, expanding OS X’s market share without diluting the core Apple brand. It wouldn’t be an Apple Mac: it’d be a Dell Mac. Dell’s good at churning out PCs, so if Apple laid down strict criteria about what should and shouldn’t go into a clone you could get decent non-Apple Macs competing in different markets to Apple Macs. Does anyone really think Dell is capable of making something as sexy as a MacBook or as iconic as the iMac?

I’m sure Mohney will be inundated with angry emails, but I do wonder how many of the senders will have reacted similarly to suggestions a few years back that Macs should run Intel chips. I think his idea’s fascinating. 48 Comments »

Sell a laptop with OS X installed

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by soundg 02/20/07

I know, your all getting a good laugh out of this suggestion, but...I know I would buy one and I would suggest to ALL my friends and relatives to do the same. Come on Steve Jobs, your operating system can make an impact. It's a polished Linux if you will... 2 Comments »

what about OS X?

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Service and Support submitted by spedbugy 02/26/07

I see everyone clamoring for linux and I agree that would be a great option, but I'd like to see drivers and support for dual or triple booting with OS X. I would like to work with that operating system, however Apple systems are rather expensive when compared to others. 6 Comments »

Buy out Apple

Dell submitted by johndude 02/28/07

Dell's a bigger company than Apple is.

Dell has an anual revenue of over 55 Billion USD compared to Apples 19 Billion.

Dell has a net income of over 3 Billion USD compared to Apples 1 Billion.

Dell should buy out Apple and start selling PC's and Laptops with Dell OS X, thus competing directly with Microsoft.

Thatd be sweet. 3 Comments »

OSX as a choice for operating system

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by undoit 02/21/07

In addition to Linux, I think a lot of users would like to have the option of running OSX on their Dell computer as an alternative to Windows or with dual boot. The financial benefits for both Dell and Apple are obvious. And the benefit to the consumer would be an increased selection of hardware that can run OSX. I think both existing Apple customers and users who are new to OSX would like to have this option available. Apple's hardware selection is very limiting.

I've owned and used many different brands of computers. Over the past 7 years I have come back to Dell time and time again to purchase laptops. The quality, feature selection and price can't be beat in my opinion. I just wish I could run OSX on my Dell. 4 Comments »

OS X??

Dell, Operating Systems submitted by slatermd 02/23/07

If Jobs will let you do it (doubtful) you should try to work a deal with Apple to license out OSX, or Leopard when that comes out. I can't imagine you could possibly sell a more expensive computer than Apple, haha. 2 Comments »

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »

Enable us to change an existing idea vote, if we make a mistake

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/01/07

A few times I've accidentally clicked on the wrong button, or voted after reading the title of an idea but wanted to change it once I read the whole thing. Could you make it so we can still click the promote button after demoting or the demote button after promoting?

Better than having inaccurate vote counts because of clumsy people like me!

Thanks! 131 Comments »

Set Digg.com as the default homepage in Firefox

Dell Community, Software submitted by firefoxplease 05/07/07

If Dell listens to its customers, then we'll soon be seeing Firefox as the default browser on their machines. Let's take it one step further and make Digg.com the default homepage in Firefox for Dell machines. 12 Comments »

Create a very lightweight and easily portable laptop.

Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by doogly 05/07/07

I think it would be great if Dell created a notebook that was very small, such as the ThinkPad X Series [http://shop.lenovo.com/us/notebooks/thinkpad/x-series] (for reference only). There are a large number of people out there, especially college students and business people who travel a lot, they really need a small and lightweight notebook that's easy to carry across campus or across the world on a business trip. I find it hard to imagine lugging an Inspiron 1501 half a mile to your next class. 4 Comments »
