15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Support higher speed memory

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Gaming submitted by shirk 05/19/07

Stop offering quad core CPU, SLI graphic cards, and terabyte hard drive systems that are limited to older low speed memory. Customers who purchase these higher end systems want their components to be up to date and cutting edge, so drop the ancient 533-667 mhz memory. Also stop crippling motherboards so that they wont support higher speed memory so customers are stuck without a choice. Give customers current memory, 800 mhz and up, for their brand new systems. 2 Comments »

Become the open source OEM

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ntaylor0909 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

In the past year, we've made a lot of progress on getting Linux to work well on all of our products. Our goal is to become the hardware vendor of choice for Linux users. Click here to learn more from john_h.

Require Intelligence Test Before Posting

IdeaStorm submitted by rockettech 04/30/07

It's simple- require posters to prove a basic level of intelligence before exposing others to their comments. I propose questions such as:

"If Godzilla and da Bears fought, who would win?

"Is it OK to use a picture of an existing product to completely describe a proposed 'all-new' product, knowing that using the picture of the existing product proves that your idea is not new?"

"Which Linux OS do they use on the Enterprise D?"

"Why shouldn't a multi-function button that magically does absolutely anything be placed on every Dell product?"

If you answer any of the questions, you fail the test and cannot post. Comments on existing posts are limited as well- maybe they can just use emoticons. We'll work on duplicate posts later. 9 Comments »

Monitors and Displays submitted by wini 05/03/07

I would like to see Dell bringing out a 3D-Display.

Take a look at:

Get rid of the regular Displays and make the screen come real. Comment »

Good computers at normal prices in Africa

submitted by dolphin 05/03/07

I would wish to see some nice computers at nice (and normal) prices, especially here, in Congo (B). The problem is that everything is imported from France where nothing is manufactured and just gets the price higher without adding any value, at least 50 percent. when the people's revenue is much much lower than in Europe. So we can not see and get nice computers at affordable prices... 1 Comment »

Why is Windows XP not available on the Dimension 9200 Series?

Dimension products, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by sparksflyhi 05/01/07

I applaud Dell's decision to offer Windows XP on many computers for those of us who choose not to go with Vista. Why isn't the Dimension 9200 included in the models available for purchase with XP? Comment »

Upgrade installed Windoze to Ubuntu on supported laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by bluevoter 05/01/07

I have a year-old Inspiron E1505 that came with Windoze XP and various craplets preinstalled. It's under a Dell service contract. I'd like to send it back to Dell and get a fresh install of Ubuntu on a wiped disk. I suspect that there are others in the same situation who might even pay a nominal fee (under $100) for this service. 3 Comments »

Sell discounted Ubuntu CDs to Dell customers who didn't get the option.

Linux submitted by jmxz 05/01/07

Now for all us unfortunate Dell customers who got Windows when we would have preferred Linux during the years after you stopped selling Linux notebooks (2002?) - how about selling a discounted Ubuntu DVDs.

Yes, I know I could download them or get CDs sent to me from

for $0 ; or buy the disks for a few dollars from one of many online retailers

But I might want it from you for a number of reasons.

  • I would expect the version from you to have the appropriate drivers for Dell machines.
  • shipit.ubuntu.com "takes up to ten weeks" to send the disks for $0. I trust you could send them faster.
  • I might not want to download and burn CDs; perhaps a slow ISP or I might not have a CD burner.
  • You already made me give you cash for an OS I didn't want. Perhaps you could use some of these dollars to give me a few dollar discount below what the alternatives cost.

No Linux CANNOT totally replace Windows...sadly!

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by kdubber 05/01/07

I see from the most popular article of the moment.. one that supports multi-booting of linux distros and Windows ..that the belief is that Linux can totally replace Windows...
SAD but true is the fact that this is really NOT true.. I wish it could..but as I have written before here and in other places..Some professional apps just CANNOT be replaced or run under Linux.. Such programs as Adobe's PhotoShop and AutoDesk's AutoCAD .. just to name two that I know of... simply cannot be replaced by anything presently available under Linux ... correct me if I am wrong..but having used QCAD and the GIMP.. they are not yet ready for Prime Time in the professional Drafting, Engineering or Graphic Arts arenas..
Developing an Ubuntu based distro that will run these.. or a consortium of Adobe, AutoDesk Dell and others to whom this would be an advantage... developing said distro..or porting ability..
As well as getting the MASSIVE gaming community a Linux distro that will be game friendly.. and a FIRST choice option instead of emulation..
This will get Linux where it needs to be in order to become a true Windows replacement ...until Linux can run these professional and popular programs.. it wil remain sadly an also ran in the OS camps..truly a shame considering it's value as a rock solid platform under which to operate!

Enable us to change an existing idea vote, if we make a mistake

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/01/07

A few times I've accidentally clicked on the wrong button, or voted after reading the title of an idea but wanted to change it once I read the whole thing. Could you make it so we can still click the promote button after demoting or the demote button after promoting?

Better than having inaccurate vote counts because of clumsy people like me!

Thanks! 131 Comments »

Hey Dell! How about using better quality motherboard?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by area5x1 05/01/07

Hey I got an idea: How about you start putting better motherboards into your computers? Sure it might raise the price, but it's good to know (or not know, for 90% of Dell customers) that you're getting a better product (at least partially) that is upgradeable. Here's a list of sample good motherboards that might be useful for higher-end machines:

- Gigabyte DS3 Rev 1.3
- Abit AB9 QuadGT
- DFI Infinity P965
- DFI Infinity 975X
- MSI P6N SLI Platinum or Diamond
- Asus Striker
- Gigabyte DQ6 3 Comments »

Dell Kit Computer - Build it and Learn.

Education submitted by reg 05/02/07

<font>
The Early Home Computers were possible to buy as a build it yourself kit.

Dell should have a basic kit:
- an unassembled motherboard, chips, resistors, capacitors, sockets, wires, etc.

It should be one of the cheaper set ups - under $500.

Kids, and hobby computer enthusiasts can solder together the motherboard components,
install the chips and RAM into the sockets, hook up cables, hard drive and CD burner.
All in a snap together case.

For safety sake - the Power supply and power supply wires are sealed and already built.

But for the motherboard, people get an instructional booklet that teaches them
resistors, capacitors, basic circuit logic, and what each sub component chip does,
from the I/O to the CPU.

Great Holiday gift! And Extremely educational.
I have met far to many people who have no idea whatsoever what goes on inside the box.

Create an "upgradable PC" line

Desktops and Laptops submitted by stk 05/02/07

I have to throw away the case, power supply, etc. on upgrading every time.

Why not create a new "upgradable PC" line where I can upgrade to the latest cpu and RAM by just sliding in a replacement card and shipping my old card (CPU and memory) for you to either recycle or re-sell as a factory refurbished system.

This reduces my cost to upgrade my PC, reduces waste, and locks me in as a loyal customer. 5 Comments »

A Dell vending machine that dispenses fully charged Dell laptop batteries…

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptop Power submitted by atendard 04/30/07

The idea is simple;
- Insert your depleted battery in the Vending Machine….
- If Battery is good: vending machine runs tests to make sure the battery is good (no physical defects, able to hold full charge, etc.)
- The customer is charged a fee (set by Dell).
- An identical known good and fully charged battery is dispensed to customer…
- Battery is placed in the vending machine to charge and be ready for yet another transaction. -And-
- Customer is happy :-)
- else Battery is "BAD" -OR- "No identical fully charged battery is available to dispense": The vending machine returns the Battery to customer with appropriate message.

Such Dell vending machines can be placed in strategic locations like airports, cafes, etc. 4 Comments »

Dell needs to PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Dell, Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by phubert 04/30/07

As this article on The Register indicates, Dell is

http://www.theinquirer.org/default.aspx?article=39286< others have pointed-out here, we seem to be seeing more movement from OUTSIDE Dell than we do FROM Dell.

I am NOT being 'extra critical'... we ARE seeing REAL movement from Dell, and I have argued on this site more than once (in spite of my own impatience) FOR patience with Dell, knowing at least SOMETHING of the tasks they are facing.

Still, this suggestion is a reminder: there's a complete work to accomplish... far more manageable than, say, California State government (and indeed FAR more manageable than the Feds!), but nevertheless a huge task.

Michael Dell: give Bob Lewis a call for your management and organizational issues... I think you'll LIKE the results if you're willing to listen. - www.itcatalysts.com< followed Bob for many years and cannot help but recommend him.

You've started something significant with IdeaStorm... and you seem to be continuing to work WITH it.

MORE POWER TO YOU! YOUR success can be success for ALL of us! 16 Comments »

Computer Insurance PC

Sales Strategies, Service and Support, Desktops and Laptops submitted by oagostinho 04/30/07

I think that'll be very useful if I can buy some kind of insurances for my PC (desktop and laptop), and pay for that with a competitive price, of course! For example, if I lost my computer, some damages, and maybe, if my computer will be replaced for their brother most ne, in one year. See Ya!
