New Inspiron Models

Dell, Inspiron products, XPS products submitted by tri 07/01/07

Hey Dell

The new Inspirons 1720s are really good with Display Choice, but...
- The Design of the Inspiron 9400 and the XPS M1710 have been as good
- ergonomic by the old models were good and you dont mustnt make every Notebook like the new M1330
- Where is the full sized Enter-Button and the HDMI Port???
- in the old models the battery was on the front now there arent any Interfaces on the Back :-(
- the old models had 6 USB - the new only 5
- The Inspirons still dont have LED Displays - but you guys got the technology for that. Look at the M1330!!! The 2 MP Cam is great:-)
- The Number Pad is ok, but not everybody needs it - make it optional
- the new 1720s got space for 2 HDDs. This takes a lot of place and Im sure, people who need over250GB in their Notebook will take an external HDD!!
- The XPS M1710 is the perfect notebook - just add Santa Rosa Chipset, Prozzessor and n-WLAN. And of course, when they are out: nvidia 8800M graphics cards (MXM Models!!) Until then, put 8700M GT (MXM) optional in it.
and the webcam and LED Display and HDMI - Ill buy it then!!!

Please think again over some new Designs

XPS 1330 with a rotatable camera and more USB ports.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by mugunth 06/26/07

Have more USB ports on the XPS 1330, just like the 1210. Just 2 USB ports is very less. One is always occupied by the mouse, and only one remains free. Also, currently the XPS 1330 does not feature a rotatable camera like the 1210. Please add that feature as an option in XPS 1330. 18 Comments »

Make decent 3-d graphics widely available

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by gkenaley 06/25/07

Right now most manufacturers will sell you a near-perfect PC for a reasonable price -except that they usually have weak, integrated 3d graphics and a power supply that will not support a powerful aftermarket graphics cards. What I would like Dell to do to differentiate itself is:

1. Make more sub-$1000 systems available with powerful graphics chips from Nvidia and/or ATI. They don't need to be high-end chips, just a lot faster than the integrated GPUs commonly on motherboards.

2. Clearly state the availability of PCI Express slots and reserve power supply capacity on all desktop systems, so that end users can easily add mid-range 3d cards if desired. You could even resell or recommend cards from EVGA, etc.

Dell can profitably follow this strategy to provide cost-efficient and power-efficient 3d graphics to the masses without cutting into its high-end XPS gamer sales.

Offer and Dell Recommend HDCP Compliant Video Cards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dimension products, XPS products submitted by clocks 06/25/07

At present, most computers sold by dell either use an integrated chipset or use a video card a couple generations old. With the move to Vista, including Home Premium edition which includes various media center features, Dell consumers are experiencing an issue where some media will not play properly under a Media Center setup.

Dell does not currently offer an HDCP compliant video card or TV tuner on most Vista PCs shipped right now. Without HDCP, there are steep restrictions in the quality and performance of the media streams that are allowed to be displayed in Vista with some content not playing at all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP

Some HDCP card choices and price points based on NewEgg consumer retail prices start with some of the the 7600GT cards currently retailing at around $90 through to new 8800 series from Nvidia and the 2900 series radeons from ATI which can retail for $450+.

I would propose also making these HDCP compliant video cards as a "Dell Recommended" component. Choosing perhaps two options, one a mid-range affordable card and one a higher end but not cost-exhorbitant chipset, would allow Dell to offer these features at a small premium over existing video choices, in some cases probably negigent cost premium depending on the selected midrange chipset. 10 Comments »

Remote control (Bluetooth or Infrared) for Notebooks - Accessories

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility, Laptops submitted by chin_teik_chia 06/28/07

Would like to suggest that Dell should have a remote control (Optional) for the laptop. The function of the remote control shoud include laser for the presentation, able to adjust the volume for music, next and previous button. The most important thing is that the remote control is able to be detected via infrared or bluetooth.

Most of the trainer having problem when they presenting their deck to the audience. They will either try to near to their laptop or getting another peers to help to control the slides. 1 Comment »

Dell add a dust/lint filter to the front of your desktop and laptops to reduce the cause of reduced cooling.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jorge 06/15/07

Dell add a screen/filter to reduce the amount of dust/lint that gets into the system fan/cooling system. This is not a problem in clean rooms where systems are probably tested but in the real world dust is everywhere, after any amount of heavy use the cooling system efficiency is greatly reduced by dust/lint build up. This can be an option if you do not want the exposure or legal ramifications on old systems, much like the Dell mouse pad on configuring a computer for sale.

Make the option to upgrade to 4 gb of RAM

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by johnpro 06/28/07

Many of the new computers are not giving consumers the option to install more than 2 gb of ram. It would be nice to make computers with the ability to hold more than 2 gb. 6 Comments »

Support Microsoft's new streamlined process from Downgrading/Upgrading from Vista to XP.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/29/07

1. Better communicate to your customers the "Downgrade" (arguably "upgrade" is a better term from the customer's perspective, since it gives the customer what they want instead of something they don't) Rights that Microsoft describes here:

An OEM may facilitate the end user’s downgrade rights from Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate to a qualified version of Windows XP Professional (noted below) on the new computer system.
2. Use the new simplified downgrade process that Microsoft's enabling to make it quicker and easier to do

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=543
Under the current rules, OEMs must call about and file for each and every machine the license keys required to downgrade from Vista to XP. But Microsoft is planning to move to a new policy which will allow its top 170 OEM partners to submit these keys online for groups of machines, which will save them time and reduce complexity, Ball said.
For more: http://it.slashdot.org/it/07/06/29/1657256.shtml< Dell is in Microsoft's top 170 OEMs; so should be able to take advantage of this new simplified program. Since the process is less labor intensive, it should be less costly too.

I hope Dell passes down these savings to it's customers.

Apply an Energy Star Rating System to your Products

Environment submitted by badblood 05/18/07

Everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment. Choosing an energy efficient appliance is one way to do this while saving money. Apply a star rating for all your products, which rates their energy consumption and ability to be recycled.

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Sell ink cartridges at local retail

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by guardianxps 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

So, for convenience and ease of access, can Dell sell ink cartridges through local retail stores? I realize Dell is an online store; and not suggesting you stop the online part, but also make it available through retail stores. Considering weather or other natural occurrences, and the latest discomfort from DHL leaving the ink cartridges on the door just to be stolen gets annoying.

We now sell ink cartridges at Staples. Click here for more details

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »
