Add more staff to the Linux development team.

Linux, Service and Support submitted by aikiwolfie Jun 25

The Linux guys at Dell do a great job. But there just aren't enough of them to meet our impatient demands. Please take on a few extra bodies with Linux programing credentials to speed things up! 2 Comments »

Make ubuntu version of laptop cheaper than Vista version

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by frz Jul 29

Hi,

I have tested the price of the Inspiron 1525 (in Chile) and the Ubuntu version (1525N) with the same Configuration. The result was disapointing.

1525 (Vista): $283.813 CLP
1525N (Ubuntu): $329.839 CLP

Why Vista is cheaper than Ubuntu? 2 Comments »

Match HP's Vista refund of $200 for people who reject the pre-installed Vista EULA.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz Jul 21

It looks like HP is now refunding $200 to people who reject the pre-installed Vista license agreement

I went down to Best Buy and picked up an HP dv6815nr since it was on sale for $599.99+tax. After powering it up, I was confronted by the Microsoft Windows Vista EULA and the HP EULA: ... [long story].... I received a check from HP in the mail for $200 on 7/17/08 ... So, world, it CAN be done - this is ~34% refund bringing the total cost of my laptop to $399.99+tax. Don't take NO for an answer. Know your rights and enforce them, or you may one day no longer have them.

Idea: Match the refund HP's giving for people who reject the Vista EULA.

(note that this idea is about the dollar-value of the discount; and shouldn't be merged into the ideas about making the process easier) 4 Comments »

Open source your driver software development

Linux, Software submitted by matsubara Jul 25

I understand the full compatibility of Linux drivers are under way and that it is being carried out by a team in Dell. However, it seems that it is not leveraging the full power of mass collaboration. Turning these drivers into open source projects could accelerate this process and enable users to bring new ideas to the table (this could even give you ideas on how to evolve computer devices).

Of course, this strategy also brings risks that could be mitigated if only Dell personel were allowed to commit changes to latest driver version. Although that would be less democratic, in an open source of thinking, at least it would empower the community to help Dell build better software.

A second step would be to do the same with Windows drivers. I know there might be legal issues in this territory, but it is also a scenario that might change over the next few years (Microsoft is getting increasingly open-minded about this - not as fast as it could be, though).

Anyway, the bottom line of this idea is "Empower your users and leverage mass collaboration to your own benefit!" Comment »

Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo Jul 3

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 13 Comments »

Can we get Studio Hybrid with Ubuntu?

Desktops, Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by arhere Aug 1

I LOVE the new Studio Hybrid PC's. Can we get it preinstalled with Ubuntu? This would drop the price even more and be a GREAT PC for surfing the Web and such.

If you say no to this idea, can we at least get a "Ubuntu capable" certification for the hardware?

Make it easier to clean the Fans on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by pwl2706 Jul 10

It is very difficult to clean the fans on laptops...and the more dust that builds up over time increases the heat inside.

There should be either a way to open a couple of screws then pull or slide out the Fans so they can be 'hoovered' or cleaned with compressed air, or a software to make the Fan run in reverse mode that might clean it... 11 Comments »

use open firmware on all systems

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Service and Support submitted by dgilmore May 21

Rather than using a closed bios that is limited in functionality. Use open firmware http://www.openfirmware.org/ on all systems. it gives greater flexibility and will allow dell to provide open source solutions from top to bottom. 3 Comments »

Sell AC adapters at retail stores

Advertising and Marketing, Laptop Power submitted by undead999 May 7

Since Dell is selling computers at retail outlets offer ac adapters for laptops at best buy, staples and anywhere you sell laptops. Also offer ac adapters at your kiosks.

AC adapter usually fail without warning, waiting days or weeks for a replacement AC adapter is not always an option for many users. Generic adapters dont always work on Dells, in addition many are underpowered espicially for 17 inch models Comment »

Add USB port 5V supply to Laptop Powersupply units

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by michael.schwarz May 14

Today a travelling laptop user has often additional mobile devices which are charged by the USB port like Music players, mobile phones, PDA's etc. To charge these the Laptop unfortunate must be switched on. If the Transformator/ power supply for Laptops would have an USB power supply connector, - devices could be charged indendent from running the Laptop. (e.g. at nigth in Hotel)

I experienced such capability some time ago by an third party Power supply and found it very valuable.

If this would be added to Dell Laptop power adapters it would offer and added value to the today mobile Users. 1 Comment »

Supply a 'free'good quality bag/sleeve with new Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by missdiva Jun 8

Dell should supply a FREE good quality bag and sleeve with all new Laptops, bearing in mind that customers have spent a considerable amount of money on their product.

Customers wouldn't then have to rush out to buy a bag/sleeve to protect their purchase. 9 Comments »

Add higher screen resolution to all home & home office laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ccpljat Apr 25

I have been using a used [another brand's] business laptop that has a high screen resolution. The cheaper Inspiron laptops can only go up to 1280x800. I cannot be productive on a screen that small any more. At least bump it up to 1440x900 or equivalent. I have basically been forced to shop in the Small Business section to find an affordable computer with a higher screen resolution. 10 Comments »

Standardize Laptop Hard Drives - banish these connectors

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by georgecoffey May 20

I wanted to upgrade my hard drive as it had a second Hard Drive Bay. When I purchased a new hard drive from a local PC Store, it wouldn't go into my new laptop. I had previously checked that it was a SATA HDD and Laptop. However, when I took out my system Drive(the one that came originally), I did notice a little connector was on it.

I went to my local PC store again to see if they could provide me with the connector, but they said go to the PC Manufacturer. So I contacted Dell, and they said you should have bought it off Dell meaning I would have to spend €300 at least on a very expensive hard drive. Whereas in a PC Store you'd get them, for far less. However, I don't understand how PC Stores can sell Laptop Hard Drives without this connector. My idea is to standardize Laptop Hard Drives without this connector cause if a newbie to PCs, wanted to upgrade their hard drives and found that they couldn't it would be a complete waste of money.

I'm beginning to wonder are Dell the only company that have these connectors the fact that the PC Store didn't have any knowledge on them. 13 Comments »

All 64 Bit PC's

Desktops submitted by class2008 05/25/07

Dell should begin producing all 64 bit pc's. WIth rumors of Windows Vista being the last OS available in 32 bit, they should get consumers ready with 64 bit pc's, at reasonable prices. 50 Comments »
