Touchpad and keyboard lock on notebooks

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by dwaral Jan 8

Many a times, we end up resting our fingers on the touchpad or accidently tapping it. If such a thing happens during crucial work, things might go terribly wrong. A small push button switch close to the touchpad to lock or unlock it would be a very useful feature.
Similarly a keyboard that can be locked by toggling a switch on the side of the notebook would be useful when you dont want to accidently press or click something. 1 Comment »

Dell/Google Home Page

Dell Web Site, Environment submitted by spoonbob Jan 8

Could the web page to be edited to allow for more google search options? I almost exclusively used Google Advanced Search, and would like to be able to set that as my default search engine with my personal preferences. This doesn't appear under Google Labs, and if it is an available option, I haven't found tt. 2 Comments »

Integrated webcam in Ubuntu Inspirons

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by prisma Jan 9 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Ubuntu laptops should come with an integrated webcam option like the Vista ones does. The integrated microphones should work out of the box so people wouldn't buy the vista version just to reinstall ubuntu in order to get an integrated webcam with their laptops. 2 Comments »

Using more AMD Processors & AMD Gaming Platforms for XPS Desktops

Dell, Desktops, Gaming, XPS products submitted by fahdriyami Jan 9

Dell seems to lack using AMD processors and mostly stick with Intels, now, Intel processors are powerfull and overclockable, but somehow they seem to lack reliablity in the long run. Intel have just released their new line of 45nm processors which require less power.
AMD have just released their 65nm processors (Phenom) series but there was a bug in the L3 cache. This is to be fixed in the 1st quarter of 2008 following the release of 45nm Phenoms, i suggest that Dell takes advantage of AMD's new true Quad core processor as it is very powerfull and also has less power consumption (thats what Dell is aiming for), and could easily Overclock safely by using AMD OverDrive technology. Also AMD's QuadFX gaming/enthusiast platform should be used to ensure high performance for Dell XPS Gaming Desktops, with the QuadFX Platform, you could have a total of eight cores with two Phenom Processors both at 3.0GHz. That would be great for next generation games. The only motherboard for this platform is the Asus L1N64-SLI WS (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=136&l3=486&l4=0&model=1530&modelmenu=1) Also AMD's new "Spider" Platform is a unique gming platform that combines AMD Phenom, AMD 7-Series Chipset and ATI's 3000 Series Graphic Cards creating the Ultimate Gaming machine, which should be a bonus for the XPS Gamig line. 14 Comments »

IMPLEMENT the INTEL PENRYN 45nm Processor on Dell's Notebook and Desktop it require less power more performance NOW!!! Dell is behind from HP

Desktops and Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 9

Dell should start to sell notebook with Penryn processor because it require less power more performance
T9500 6MB L2 2.60 GHz 800 MHz
T9300 6MB L2 2.50 GHz 800 MHz
T8300 3MB L2 2.40 GHz 800 MHz
T8100 3MB L2 2.10 GHz 800 MHz
specially on the XPS line etc... , well i hope DELL would not overcharge the consumers , dell can you sell this to us right now!!! for now it seems dell is falling behind again , well they have catchup with their design but somehow they fall behind with the power inside the laptop especially the penryn processors , dell hear us now implement the PENRYN processor , your behind from HP now , if you have gone to hp website and choose the dv9700t and dv6700t model you will see that HP is getting started about the Intel Penryn T9300 6MB L2 2.50 GHz as an option, , i dont know why DELL is Behind they should implement this now!!!

Release a business version of the Alienware doublewide curved DLP display with LED illumination

Monitors and Displays submitted by jervis961 Jan 9

Businesses are always looking for ways to save desk space and a monitor like this could do the trick. Different versions could be made based on the use of the monitor. I work with up to 6 monitors at a time and would rather look at a few of these than 6 singles. I wouldn't need 2ms response time or high def resolution because my screens are mostly text based but I would like to have a neater, roomier desk area. 15 Comments »

Improve Dell Support website search

submitted by ioniancat21 Jan 9

I can't stand searching for parts or anything on Dell.com. As a test you can go to the site and see an item featured on a page in front of you and when you search for it by name, part#, part type it's rarely found. Please improve the searchability of the Dell site. On a bright note searching by service tag does work well though. Comment »

Data Center Energy reduction

submitted by danapep Jan 9 **IN PROGRESS**

I know these numbers are not precise, but in broad terms power consumption in a data center to my understanding is roughly:

1/3 waste spilled off as heat in stepping down electricity for low power components
1/3 cooling
1/3 functional computing capacity

Is there not some way we could eliminate the first 1/3, thus eliminating the need for the second third, and thereby cutting power use by 2/3.

I am no electrical engineer, but it seems to me if we think of a data center as a whole instead of one computer at a time and re-engineer servers accordingly, we could drastically reduce the expense and environmental impact. 11 Comments »

Legal Blueray Playback on Ubuntu

Linux submitted by prisma Jan 9 **UNDER REVIEW**

Ubuntu have a legal way to play DVD's with LinDVD on current Dell hardware offers which we the customers appreciate. However, windows hardware products come with an option to add a blueray player. Dell should add that option as well to their Ubuntu offers. A commercially available piece of software (like LinDVD) could be implemented to play blueray DVDs.

A translucent notebook

Laptops submitted by anordal Jan 9

Edited: This idea was known as "A transparent notebook", although it was translucent I meant.

Why not make the plastic case translucent? I have seen a translucent calculator and partly translucent computer mice made of plastic that makes the inside look blurred. It gives a sense of quality. Used extensively, the translucent plastic makes a simplistic, clean look.

I have seen XPS notebooks with builtin lights shining colorful out from the fan exhaust. The suggestion for backlit keyboards is well promoted on this forum. I suggest having a translucent keyboard with dark bold letters and *soft* lighting underneath that also makes the chassis shine vaguely.

As I imagine it:
A simplistic, yet quality oriented notebook. More of a workstation than a gaming machine. Off-the-shelf hardware without extra fuss, an absolute minimum of drivers required. An exceptionally good 1680x1050 15.4" anti-reflective screen (anti-reflective, since the type of plastic I am thinking about has a more or less rough surface, definately not iPod-shiny). The light switch should be purely mechanical. By the way, who wouldn't appreciate more than one headphone jack?

Since this obviously is a geeky machine, it would be appreciated to have it available with Linux installed and with a Tux-key instead of Windows-key (Tux, since not only ubuntu people would buy it). To me, it sounds logical to run open source software inside a computer that shows what it is made of. 5 Comments »

Implement an Option of an Intel Core 2 Extreme and a Intel Core 2 Quad processor and the new PENRYN processor on XPS 1330 and 1530 and a higher Graphics Card 8700gt or above

Sales Strategies, XPS products, Laptops submitted by bryan14c Jan 9

dell should implement a Core 2 extreme processor as an option for the XPS 1330 and 1530 and a first quad core notebook , because the high end models have this , why not on the 1330 and 1530 XPS is high end right? and also why stick to 8600gt that there is a 8700gt or above graphics card , well the XPS 1530 and 1330 overall design is great slim light, well as an addition dell should also implement a PENRYN processor

90 degree connector on laptop power supply

Laptop Power submitted by pennir02 Jan 9

With the Latitude laptop power supply, the DC power cord terminates in a long proprietary coaxial plug. The electrical characteristics are fine. The problem I've experience is due to the mechanical stress that is transferred to the power jack or motherboard due to the plug exiting straight out the rear. When the connector is plugged in, it's length (about 35mm or so) can cause it to break the jacks solder connections and/or snap the motherboard if the User props up the front of the laptop or accidentally hits or bumps the connector against other desktop peripherals.

It would be helpful if the laptop end of the power cord terminated in a short 90 degree plug to keep it closer to the case.

Promote Windows Home Server Bigtime

Servers and Storage submitted by gcreese 02/17/07

Microsoft is coming out with Windows Home Server this year, which will allow households to backup and manage their house PCs from a single spot. At this point, a lot of households are in this situation (e.g., with two adults and a child, we have three laptops, a desktop, and three PDAs). Get out in front of the curve on this one (HP made its announcement at the CES Show), talk about it, promote the fact that you will offer it, and in the vein of the other "make the website easier to use" suggestions, explain how Windows Home Server is something to consider for a family going digital.

Also, offer a Windows Home Server discount to current customers who've ordered two or more PCs from Dell in the past five years. You have the data to run an effective, targeted marketing campaign. Use it! 168 Comments »

XPS M1530 with LED Screen and 2MP Camera

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by marcusesq Jan 10

Potential buyers enquiring about LED backlit screens for the XPS M1530 are being told the following by Dell sales reps.

"This is not part of the current plans for XPS 1530 … as 15.4" users are less weight sensitive than XPS1330 buyers, and more likely to leverage the higher-res 2Mp webcam."

I want the LED backlit screen mainly for the extra brightness and lower power consumption and really couldn't car less about a thinner screen. In fact I think the thinner screen used on the M1330 would feel too flimsy on the M1530. As it is now, I like the solid feel of the current screen on the M1530.

I have a feeling that Dell's market research regarding 15.4 users being more likely to want a 2MP camera is probably accurate, so my request is as follows:

Install LED backlighting AND a 2MP camera into the current screen form factor. 1 Comment »

Fiire Media Centers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell, Software submitted by cjbarth Jan 10

You should team up with Fiire to provide you some Linux experience and provide some great media center ideas much the same way you teamed up with Alienware. It would be realy cool to have this kind of media center in ones home.
